I just checked my e-mail and found 20 something e-mails proclaiming a response to a thread I had posted in. FYI, the option to received notification is in the user cp and was turned on by default.
good catch. I changed mine. Thanks.

But beyond changing the options, you acutally have to go unsubscribe to anything you've already posted in. It had automatically assumed I wanted to subscribe to anything before I changed the option to "no" on that, but still I had to manuall remove the ones I had already posted in.

Even if you were using the default setting (notification on) every time you post, you had the option to turn notification off. I just looked in the Control Panel to find out if it is possible for me to default everyone to not subscribing. I couldn't fine such a setting. Everyone should edit their user options.
