What do you think? I think it should be up to the indiviual since that is an option in each persons preferences.

Nothing like good, unbiased polling options. ;)
my "none" vote is not due to facism, it sdue to load times. Loading up images for each user simply makes pages display slower and doesn't give any added benefit. Sure, you may look at people's avatars the first time they include it, but after that its just noise.

You can turn them off if you don't like the load times so why not include them for those that don't suffer from crappy Internet connections? Load time is not an issue for everyone and for those that it is can simply choose not to have them.

But if you turn it off in your options then it will not effect your load times. That is why I don't see the harm. If you don't want them, you don't have to see them.
Ps. I really doubt if I'll ever have an avatar. I just don't get why we would turn off an option that will only affect those who want it.
Pss. Yeah, Skydog. Isn't that standard polling method?

Seems sort of win-win to turn them on. People who want them can have them and people who don't want them can turn them off. Who loses by turning them on?

I don't really care. I can see both sides of the issue. If you go by the different signatures though, I can see how it might give a little more flavor to the board. Can you imagine what some people will use for their avatars? Hornsmanic, for instance?

Oops...didn't notice that option. That would change my vote to Yes I guess.

I voted yes. I dont see any harm in it since it is an option anyways, just as long as they are small and not indecent for the younger members.

I don't see the harm as long as individuals can turn them off if they like. Plus, I want to use my new avatar:

Why do I have the feeling that if avatars become a reality here, half of them will be Simpsons related, another quarter of them will have something to do with Texas, and the other quarter will be some incarnation of Fritz's pussy?

you could always add your avatar into your signature...
Never mind - I guess that's turned off.

Dumb question: What exactly is an Avatar? Is it a signature?

I think they are little pictures that are put underneath your name. I'm for them.

I have found, on other boards, that avatar's help me to associate comments and personalities to fellow board members easier, especially when you are new to a board and have so many new names to try to pin down. A lot of member's names don't stand out or are hard to remember, but if they have a unique avatar it helps.
Not sure if that makes sense. To put it bluntly, I voted for 'yes' :)

Bump since we are currently tied.
Still can't understand why someone would vote to turn them off for everyone when they can simply turn them off for themselves. Are people really that much of control freaks that they would try to ruin everyones parade? Please explain yourselves.

I have seen that in many aspects of life. Because someone desn't enjoy something, then they don't want anyone to enjoy it even when it doesn't effect them at all. Like I said, facist.

Having them turned on will not harm anyone... for those who want to see them, they can.... for those who don't, they can turn them off.
Pretty simple to me :).
But it ain't my forum to make the decisions in, so really its up to the admin guys.

I change my vote from turn them off to turn them on. When I voted I did not realize people can turn them off.
The forum default should (IMO) be off, but I don't see the harm if people want them and others want to view them.

So far that would mean 2 more Yes votes and 2 less No votes putting us in favor by over 50% of those who responded.

i voted yes, avatars are fun and like everyone else has commented, if they can be turned off by people who do not want them then why not allow the rest of us to enjoy them?
