View Full Version : Developing Backup QBs

I have used a strategy recently that has both helped and hurt me and wanted to know if any of you people do the same thing.

I play a single-player league. I have noticed that every 2 or 3 years you can pick up a QB with a potential of 60-70 in the later rounds, say rounds 4-7. I will often grab one of these when I can, use him in training camps for several years (and maybe garbage time in the regular season). When he is close to developed, I will trade him off, often times with my first round pick, and get one of the top picks in the draft. That obviously helps in rebuilding your team without losing (recently I did this and was able to, with a few other trades, end up with 3 first round draft picks!). It does come back to haunt me at times when I see 1 or 2 of my former players in the top of the QB ratings, especially recently when, the season after I traded away a 68/77 QB, my regular starter (who had just finished the previous two seasons with ratings of 96.0 and 117.8) went down for 1 1/2 years with an MCL injury (not injury prone before this). So, it is a risk. If you want a real life example, Green Bay used to do this in the 90s with their QBs that played behind Brett Favre.

Anyway, your thoughts?

Sweep the leg. That's my thought.

Welcome to the board.

If, in time, you get tired of this sort of "workaround" I suspect you will find that a lot of players here use some sort of house rules to restrain themselves from defating the game engine in this way. There are a number of ways in which the computer teams simply don't make ideal decisions, and can be taken advantage of. In time, you might find the single player experience gets more rewaring once you close some of these doors, and have to find other ways to beat the game.

Best of luck, regardless.

You could also try to find a fun multiplayer league. Although, it's less likely to see these kind of QBs drop in the draft and grab them in the later rounds. At least the challenge will be much bigger against human owners. (Although, you should know that some human players are even worse at this game than the AI. :D)

I would love to try that, however, I don't think I would have the time needed to devot to it. Right now it is nice knowing that I can drop/pick up the game as needed (ie when I have time).

Actually the Imperial Football League is nice in that regard since we only run one game a week. But, we do have a waiting list to get in.
