I am going to upgrade my video card. It is an nvidia chipset MX440. Nothing fancy, but pretty much runs games I play. I don’t really do FPS. I bought an LCD monitor and want to use the digital connection. The old card does not accept digital.
Seems like a lot of people at FOFC know a lot about this kind of stuff. Can you help point me in the right direction (save me some research time)? What is a good card that I can get under a hundred bucks?
Thanks
Any Video Card with the 6600GT chip (not the 6600 without GT) from Nvidia is good enought even for modern FPS games and it's probably around $100 right now. I bought mine for $150 a few months ago.

I just bought an x800GT video card from Newegg for $174 and I love it.
Check newegg, imo they are one of the best places for pc stuff - and tigerdirect.

Yeah the 6800GT is an excellent choice specially for FPS but more expensive, it was around $250 when i bought my 6600GT. Damn how fast does hardware go down on price.

A 6600GT-based card is still around $130-$150 (checking NewEgg), while the straight 6600 cards are hovering at $100. If you can spend a bit more, get a 6600GT, if you want to stick at $100 get a 6600. NewEgg is nice because they have user reviews of the specific models which can help you make a final decision.

Would you believe that I just upgraded to an MX440 last week? My GeForce2 Ti recently broke (yeah actually broke - the computer started smelling like smoke and the screen went blank) after 5 good years of use. I just wanted a cheap card to tide me over until the next big pc upgrade time.

It really is basically a GeForce2 part with no vertex or pixel shader support like a real GeForce 4.

Agreed, but
GeForce2 Ti (emitting smoke) -> MX440 = upgrade

Thanks a lot, this info is extremely helpful. On newegg, I saw the 6600gt for around $129-$150. I have a bad habit of overbuying. I figure if I start at $100, I will get out with tax and shipping around $150.
So, do you think just switching from analog to digital will increase the picture quality on the LCD?

So, do you think just switching from analog to digital will increase the picture quality on the LCD?Some, because the signal won't get artifacting from the analog bits. But if you're screen looked lousy with analog, it won't suddenly look fantastic on digital, unless your monitor had a really bad DAC (ADC?) in it.

Splurge a little.
For around $350, get the NVidia GForce 7800GT.
Solid Card. I replayed DOOM III, HL II, Far Cry as well as COD 2 and F.E.A.R. All play VERY well. Except FEAR is a HUGE system hog.

Only if he has PCI express. Sounds like to me he's an AGP guy.

You're right.
Sorry.
Break down and get a new rig.
