I have to admit, i did, and I have to snicker every time UGO or doubleclick tries to serve me an ad.. (like here with the intertials the Planet sites try to serve up), and a second later, I see that it failed miserably.

Doubleclick's IP IS127.0.0.1 on my machine, after all ;)

What's this about? I'm familiar with HOSTS files (even though i thought those were legacy files nowadays) fwiw.

It's not legacy.. it checks your HOSTS file for what you enter before doing a name lookup on a DNS server.

So if you set a lot of adware sites to 127.0.0.1 (your local machine) or 0.0.0.0 (null space), when it attempts to reach that site, it will fail...

here's one that's really popular..

To a guy that has no idea how to tinker with their HOSTS file...how does one download the zip file and put it to use?

I use Mikes Ad Blocking host file (hxxp://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html), complete with installer.

MikeVick7 if you use the ScoobyHosts.zip just unzip that file to one of the following directories.

XP users use this path. c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc directory overwriting your old hosts file. You may want to backup your old hosts file.

Windows 2000 users will have to use this path: c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc

Win 95/98 users should use this path: c:\windows
