Every year, this writer for the Pittsburgh PG presents his Trite Trophy for the most overused/obnoxious/meaningless crap spewed by announcers.

And the winner is....

I though "Pick Six" was used far too often this year. I thought it would have at least gotten a mention. I'm sick of hearing it.

I think they chose a good winner. It always seemed like a pretty pointless statement, though it became a great way to avoid a question.

I thought for sure 'Make a Football Move' had it locked up this year! Every time I hear that, I replay the Bobby Knight interview of 'What is a game face?' in my mind....

This guy (Gene Collier) has the best sense of humor.

They play a radio bit on one of the local stations, about one year at the NFL Draft...I can't remember exact details, but when it was held in Philly. Back before it was the huge TV deal it was now.

He tells about how in the late rounds, a few of the beat writers from around the league are sitting, just waiting for it to end...someone proposes they hold their own draft--made up of any person in history.

[I am paraphrasing here...was hoping to find a link of story somewhere, but no luck.]

They decide, being in Philly, the Philly writer gets the first pick...

Guy steps up to the mike (they made a makeshift podium, you were required to take your card up to)...

"The Eagles select, from Mongolia State, DE Genghis Khan..."

Everyone applauds the pick...

Next up, guy from the Jets beat...

'With the 2nd pick...the Jets select, OT from the Commonwealth of Viriginia, Ben Franklin." He explains, big guy, very intelligent, build your OL around him for the next 10 years.

3rd pick...guy from the Buffalo...

"The Bills are pleased to select, LB Atilla the Hun..."

It gets to Collier's choice at 6th...he gets up to the podium..

'With the 6th pick of the draft, the Steelers take, QB, from the University of Nazereth...Jesus Christ"

Collier says the Steelers are ecstatic to get him with the 6th pick and that "he literally can walk on water" and "the kid works miracles--he can see the whole field"

The one that I keep hearing the really bugs me is "head on a swivel". I've heard it used as both a good and bad quality.
I also agree that "pick six" really was overused this year.

That one and "football move" drive me the most nuts. I believe ESPN's Sunday Night Crew uses them both quite frequently.

I'm not as annoyed by "football move" since it is usually used in the context of deciding if a dropped ball is an incomplete pass or a fumble. It seems like "football move" was part of the definition of a completed pass.

You see it alot when they are showing the different replay angles of a challenged play. And the announcer will ask the rhetorical "Is he making a football move?", which no one can answer...because nobody knows what the hell a football move is...

Good stuff, as usual. However, I'm baffled how, in the year of George Mason and the usual "our conference gets no respect in the BCS" clatter, Mid-Major not only didn't win or make the finals, but wasn't even mentioned in the article.

I was at least expecting a nod to the Denny Green knock-off of the "it is what it is" phrase. It seems like he breathed new life into that phrase this past year with his "they are who we thought they were" classic.

Agreed. At least in basketball, it almost made sense. In football, it's just a waste. There are the haves and the have-nots. That's it. In basketball, you have those programs in between the elites and the schools on the bottom that shouldn't be D-1 at all. Hence the mid-major deal.

I don't understand why someone thought this was a buzzword for all middling D-1 programs that aren't from a big conference.

That's why I thought it should be included. It went from a basketball-specific "term of art" to a generic catch-all reference. It's the 2006 sports equivalent of "alternative music."

I keep hearing a new football cliche that's now making the rounds - Quick Change. A quick change or quick exchange is (apparently) when a team takes over possession following a punt or turnover on downs. I've been watching football for 25 years, and I'd never heard the term until this season. But it seems I now hear at least once a game.
