Based on Easy and Flash's responses I'll actually address the question being asked and say yes.

I always thought it was American Sign Language.

I think it stands for Advanced Squad Leader, a fairly complex war board game.

To answer the question, a buddy of mine tried to get me into the game, but I never really got into it.

Yes, ASL = Advanced Squad Leader.
I am an on and off again wargamer, have always been interested in it, and decided to try it out. What is the best way to get started, short of finding some one locally who has played it?

I'd recommend finding someone nearby who has played it. Even with my friend's expertise, I found it somewhat difficult to get into, but I think if I could have gotten past the initial curve, it might have been fun.

If you are not going to find someone local who has played it, you will need to find someone local who has not, buy the game and play together. It takes time to learn.
It is best to search for a local group and have someone with experience play, who is willing to tell you when you are making stupid moves. Slowley back off from the coaching as you progress. Otherwise, you will just get hosed, but you'll learn that way too.
If you can find a group that plays locally, they will want a new player as that adds new minds to the game.
