View Full Version : Yet Another QuikSand Puzzle

The other day, Mrs Q and I were having a conversation. It stuck me that I had an opportunity to create from it yet another puzzle to share with the crowd here. Hope you enjoy.
Here's a deliberately abbreviated synopsis of the conversation... it's now yours to figure out on your own:
- - - - -
Seven three in thirty-five?
Nine ten in thirty-nine...
We'd better pack our bags!

Something to do with flight numbers and when they are leaving? That would make some sense during the holiday travel season, and fits with packing bags.
I would say that you were looking at the screen in the airport, but they why aren't your bags packed by that point?

Seven three in thirty-five?
Nine ten in thirty-nine...
If you read this backwards as time
5:30 is half-way between 3:00 and 7:00.
9:30 is half-way between 10:00 and 9:00.
EDIT: Wait....actually, not quite, my mind was playing tricks on me...

numerically:
73 in 35
910 in 39

Another way to look at it:
73 in 30--five?
910 in 30--nine.
I'm still lost in the woods on this one.

The first thing I thought of when I saw this was that the first set of numbers (before the "in") sound like baby weights...seven three is 7 lbs 3 oz, but I don't know what it would have to do with the second set of numbers, unless it's the number of hours in labor?????

Hmm, twins aren't usually that big, so I doubt it is babies unless two different people had the babies.
That's better than the track I was taking. I kept trying to analyze the numbers as coordinates on a map.

Seven wins, three places in 35 games, nine wins, ten places in 39 games... pack bags for Vegas?

The 2nd line appears to be an answer to question in the 1st line. The 3rd line appears to be the reaction to that answer.
Bags could mean more than luggage, like shopping bags, golf bags or a slang for packing it in.

Seven wins, three places in 35 games, nine wins, ten places in 39 games... pack bags for Vegas? That could be an appropriate reason for packing bags. It does appears that the 2nd line is an increment over the 1st. Or a correction.

Jack Schmitt, the 12th man on the moon... was born on July 3rd of 1935. That and travelling... probably not related to the puzzle.

It's a baby!?!?!?!
7lbs 3 oz at week 35
9lbs 10 oz (projected) at week 39
Back you're hospital bags--that baby's coming soon! (i.e. we ain't gettin' to 39 weeks).
edit: if I'm not mistaken, human gestation is 38 weeks, so that lines up.

Even assuming you can accurately determine the weight of a fetus to the ounce in utero, wouldn't the correct terminology be "Seven three at thirty five"?
"Seven three" and "Ten nine" sound like references to length, either in feet or inches ('Three' and 'nine' would correspond to 1/4 and 3/4 of a foot) or as a shorthand for decimal (metric?). "in thirty-five" does sound like a time interval of some sort.
But any other random guess would be crazy talk on my part. ;)

Just remember that those weights are ESTIMATES. They thought our first was going to be huge (projecting close to 10 pounds or something) so they would not let my wife go past her due date. 7 lbs 12 oz, but she was tall (long and thin) with a big head. That really screwed up the ultrasound size estimations.

You were right the first time, IIRC. Human gestation is, on average, 38 weeks. However, pregnancies are often referred to in weeks from LMP, which is roughly gestation plus 2 weeks. So 39 weeks LMP is actually 37 weeks gestation.

It's true that these are estimates. At 39 weeks (our child took 40) the ultrasound technician gave my wife a worried look and said Gregory was well over 10 pounds and might hit 11. He came out 8 pounds, 11 ounces, which is not too bad for a late baby.
Congrats! we got a 3D pick like that since yesterday, our girl will be born in 12 weeks from now.

Mrs Q and I are absolutely overjoyed at our wonderful news -- after more than 20 hours of labor and a pretty rough go of things, she delivered at a bit past 1:00 Tuesday morning. The 8 pound 6 ounce baby girl is named Elisa Kay, and both baby and mom are doing well and preparing to come home tomorrow morning. Baby has been doing just great -- early returns are that she's a very good sleeper and eater -- she has cried less than a half hour in total of the first (nearly) 48 hours of her young life, and she is taking to feeding pretty well in day two.
Dad is making a pass by home to rack up a few quality sleep hours... and to finally exhale after the undisputed best days of my life.
