View Full Version : Getting a Tattoo

I've had the urge to get one for a while now. I've come to terms that it's pretty permanent, I just don't know what I really want. What are some tattoo's that the FOFC has? Or has thought of getting?

I'll never get the facination with tattoos.
Seems rather dumb to me.
Anywho, get like a Mike Tyson thing. Go big.

I have a USMC Bulldog on one arm and a Grim Reaper looking creature on the other arm, I've been wanting to get a blue note (Blues) for awhile now and have my Dad get something... just haven't went and done it yet.
Most places have tons of books to look through or most of them hanging on the walls to look at. Something ought to interest you.

Don't be like my sister and draw a little design up and have it tatooed on your wrist . Only to have everyone ask you why you have a swastika on your wrist.
Woops.

Bug, you should find something that matches your personality whatever that may be. Also, pay the extra money on getting an original. Have the artist draw it up or have some who is good at drawing create the template and keep it once you are finished, so no one else will have it. It'll make it more enjoyable for you knowing that someone else will show up with the same exact tattoo.
I have six tattoos:
The Grim Reaper on my right arm.
A cross with my son's name on left arm.
A lion ripping through my skin on my left pec. (the only mistake one. the artist did a poor job with the coloring).
A skeleton ripping through my skin on my right pec.
A gothic looking tribal with a skull in the center on my upper back.
A tribal that looks like a skull on my lower back.

More strategically placed then the tatoo on your stomach that says Enter in Back???

I have two and a design in mind for the third. I'm working with my brother to get the design for the third finished.
I expect I'll have a few more before too long, but no real plans per se.
The only things I'll say about tattoos are as follows:
1. Make sure you really want it. Now that you have the idea, wait a month and see if you still like the idea. These things ARE expensive to get removed (and painful from what I hear), so make sure it's what you really want to do
2. Don't get a flash design (something you see on the wall of the tattoo studio). Design your own, or ask your artist to help you design something original. Flash is lame.
3. Select your artist carefully. Any reputable artist will have a photo album or six of tats they've done. Look how they turned out, how the edging was done (is it even, is it a "straight" line, things like that), etc.
4. Look into the shop. Ask to see the autoclave. Any GOOD, SERIOUS artist should be happy to show you these things, AND answer any questions you may have (yes, it DOES hurt, but it's really not too bad).
5. After getting it, your artist should have instructions for you for care of it. They usually include keeping the bandage on for a few hours and how to keep it moist and how to clean it. Personally, on a fresh tat, I use Johnson & Johnson's baby soap and J & J baby lotion to be "extra gentle" to the healing skin and keep it moist without overdoing it.
6. DON'T DRINK OR TAKE PAIN MEDICATIONS PRIOR TO GETTING YOUR TAT (OR JUST AFTER GETTING IT). Pain meds like Advil, aspirin, and other anti-inflammatories thin your blood and make the healing go slowly and increase likeliehood for uneven inking (I know this from personal experience, as when I got my 2nd tat, I forgot that I was on an anti-inflammatory for my ankle and it made the coloring uneven because of the extra bleeding and such. Going in intoxicated on alcohol is just a bad idea, and your artist should NOT let you get tattoo'd if you are, but some just don't care.
Finally, check out hxxp://www.bmezine.com/ (some parts of it NSFW) for FAQ's and guides on tat artists and to see various artist portfolios.
Good luck with your decision process and let us see the results!!! :) ;)

What everyone else said above... only get it if you know exactly what you want and it means something to you.
I have a celtic dragon across my back and I'm really glad I went and did it (it was something I wanted to do since I was 16) , but I know too many people who have got it on a whim and have really regretted it since.
It's definitely addictive, I'd love to get another but my fiancee isn't exactly receptive to the idea.

my wife and I have matching ones - a celtic band that ties together. on the ties are colored beads - birthstone colors for me, her and the 2 kids. mines on my arm, hers on the ankle.
I really like the idea and have no regrets, but the execution was a bit off. in retrospect, the band is really too thick for her ankle. and it's a bit crooked. both factors are only really noticeble to us or if someone really studies it, but, we know. you know? if I had to do it again, I would really double check the design work to make sure it was 100% what I wanted.

Of course I wouldn't think less of somebody as a person; I'm not that shallow. It might make me less attracted to a person, but that's about it.
My wife wants a tattoo on her ankle and I'm trying to talk her out of it, but if she ends up getting it, I'm not going to divorce her. :)

I have a hole in my spine, which is permanent.. (Im missing most of two of my vertebrae about a half-foot below my neck.. basically where my heart would be) So I plan to get a tattoo of a Giger-esque spine with a hole in it in the same spot, in which there will be some detail of what lies inside.. haven't yet settled on whether that should be something surreal, or maybe a representation of what would be inside, like the back side of my heart or something.. I figure this to be my only good idea for a tattoo based on the fact that most of the ones I have thought of in the past have been pretty juvenile and "of the moment" in retrospect. All I need to find is a quality artist.. Money isn't much of an issue if I know the ink will be done right.

I don't think he means a hole in the skin, just that he's missing a couple of vertebrae, thus leaving a gap in his spine (which I'm still trying to figure out how that could be, but thats a whole 'nother thread)

I guess you could say I am (partially ) spineless. the parts of the bone that stick out in the back and make those bumps when you bend over.. well, I am missing a great deal of two of them I believe.. may just be one.. This was discovered in an X-ray at a chiropractor when I was probably 13 or 14 years old. I dont think there is any actual exposure of the spinal cord or anything drastically bad like that, but for whatever reason, I just dont have fully developed vertebrae in that area.
I've played football most of my life and passed physicals without any problems.. I wonder if maybe I should get it looked at sometime soon to see if maybe it could be a degenerative condition.. That could suck. :)

I agree with Cam when it comes to tattoos. If you don't know what you want, don't run out and get one.
I got two at age 19, one on each upper arm. I always wanted more but didn't get my third one until I was 26, which is the one that goes from my hand onto my forearm (on the wrist I guess). I want atleast one more, to go on the rest of my forearm or on my other forearm/wrist, but have not come up with anything worth it yet.

I've got a chinese symbol on my right shoulder. According to the chinese dictionary at the tattoo shop it means "energetic", but in reality it stands for "peer pressure".
I thought about getting one that means "respect," but always feared walking proudly thru Chinatown with "Champion Penis Sucker" on my arm.
I have my initials on my arm in my own writing. People always think it's a jailhouse tattoo that I had shaded in. It did come in relly handy at a party once when someone tried to claim my CD was really his. He claimed he wrote JT on the CD, but just walked away when I asked why he "would write it in this writing" and rolled up my sleeve.

I thought about getting one that means "respect," but always feared walking proudly thru Chinatown with "Champion Penis Sucker" on my arm.Believe me, that thought occurred to me the next day. I spent an hour scouring the internet to make sure that the symbol I got actually meant "energetic". The 'best' part was when I found one that looked similar that means "fornication", I almost pooped my pants. Thankfully I found the exact match and it indeed means "energetic", and apparently "prosperous" as well.
But seriously, all it says to my friends is "peer pressure". I still can't believe what a sheep I am sometimes.
