We get 10 job offers, two within the conference, but I don't think we're interested in moving yet.

We make no staff changes, although I do flirt with the idea of firing the trainer for last year's performance. Unfortunately there's no-one better to replace him with, so he'll stick around another year.

Nobody from the MWC is in the top 20 recruiting classes. Our class, unfortunately, is listed as Awful.

The recruiting service we used last year, is now the top ranked service, and out of our price range. I decide to go with the 2* service again this year, giving us some money to throw around at recruits and their potential ratings are often accurate. Mostly, it's going to be a shot in the dark, though.

We get a tough schedule with 3 top 25 teams, plus some solid teams thrown in to boot. Seems like everybody wants to pick on us this year.

There's no sense going with this schedule, it's not going to advance the cause any. I try to change these teams off our schedule.

@ Missouri
@ #9 Florida
@ #10 Connecticut
@ #2 Arizona

In the end, I manage to drop Missouri, Connecticut and Arizona off the schedule, but get stuck with the Florida game.

SDSU Non-Conference Schedule
Rice
@ Wisconsin Green Bay
Richmond
Maine
@ #9 Florida
@ Georgia Southern
Samford
@ Char Southern
DePaul
@ Clemson
Princeton
Western Illinois
Pacific

Well, I already messed up. I was going to redshirt both Ewing and Gostin, as they just don't have the talent, but they're loaded with potential. I was thinking that would give vtbub a better team to go with next year, but I forgot to do it during the training phase, and now I'm stuck with them.

Meet the 2004-2005 SDSU Aztecs

C- Quinton Campbell (6-7, 222) Sophomore
Campbell is undersized, but worked exclusively on his defensive game during the offseason. (15 Games, 10.4MPG, 3.1 PPG, 1.6 RPG)

PF - Courtney Jones (6-7, 191) Sophomore
Jones worked on his rebounding and defense during the offseason, and is a fairly good player, minus the fact that he has no endurance at all. (10 Games, 2.2 MPG, 1.0 PPG, 0.2 RPG)

SF - Jeremy Truscott (6-4, 185) Senior
This natural shooting guard is oe of the better players on the team. Truscott is not only a great offensive player, he greatly improved his defensive aspects as well. Knock? Low Endurance. (15 Games, 31.9 MPG, 12.2 PPG, 5.1 RPG)

PG - Valery Phillips (6-3, 180) Sophomore
Phillips had a great off season, and is now the premier player on the team. (29 Games, 15.5 MPG, 5.5 PPG, 2.2 APG)

SG - Rob McCuthison (6-2, 150) Senior
Although McCuthison's skills deteriorated a bit in the off season, he is still a talented player, one of the best on the team. (22 Games, 33.2 MPG, 11.5 PPG, 4.3 APG)

Bench:
C - Adam Alexander (6-10, 194) Senior
Alexander has improved his game, not only offensively, but defensively. (21 Games, 6.0 MPG, 1.3 PPG, 0.5 RPG)

G - Reggie McRae (5-9, 159) Junior
McRae is the best pure shooter on the team. (25 Games, 29.4 MPG, 8.6 PPG, 4.4 APG)

C - Dan Carter (6-11, 218) Junior
A starter last year, Carter regressed at camp, and we see limited time off the bench. (29 Games, 32.2 MPG, 7.3 PPG, 3.4 RPG)

F - Eddie Evans (6-5, 183) Sophomore
Evans improved his offensive game, but he is a defensive liability. (1 Game, 1 MPG, 0.0 PPG)

Game 1: Rice @ SDSU
We have a strong start, but our poor endurance shows, and by half time, Rice is in control 44-38. We shoot horrible to start of the 2nd, and by the time we get on track, Rice has it won 83-62. Truscott leads the team in scoring with 15 and 7, followed by Jones with 11 and 7.

Game 2: SDSU (0-1) @ Wisc. GB (0-1)
We come out cold and Wisconsin builds an early 10 point advantage, but we struggle back, and by the half lead 33-32. The defence does their job and hold Wisc. to 39% shooting, however the offence falls apart, and the Phoenix take the game in the final min, 67-63. Truscott had 20, and that's about it.

Game 3: Richmond (2-0)@ SDSU (0-2)
We're not even in this one. We shoot 20% for most of the 1st half, and find ourselves down 35-22 at the break. The Spiders run away with it in the 2nd, winning 67-44. We shoot 19-56.

Our team sucks.

Game 4: Maine (1-2) @ SDSU (0-3)
We don't score on our first 8 possessions, and after a time out, 5 SDSU players walk out on to floor with 2 assholes. This sparks the team, and they fight themselves back into a 30-28 halftime lead. With less then a min left, McCuthison gives us a one point lead, but the Black Bears come back, and a deuce in the dying seconds gives them a 61-59 win. McCuthison had 15, while Jones got 14 and 9 boards. We should have won :(

Just when everything is at it's darkest. Bobby Walls is our first commitment. 5* star baby. 1st ranked PG, 1st in the West, #5 overall. Plus a 3.99 GPA. I have no idea why he committed. I was chasing him aggressively, but he had a 1 block interest in us last week. Nice!

Which takes us to the end of November. We have a 0-4 record. Except for some lapses, our defense is playing very well, I think. However, I can seem to find the trigger on the offense yet. Hopefully, with a 5* recruit coming in this year, we won't get fired before we can use him.

Game 5: SDSU (0-4) @ #10 Florida (4-2)
We actually make a game out of it, and Phillips 11 points helps us to a 36-36 half time score, despite shooting 11-29 in the half. However we continue with the horrible offence, and the Gators take control. We do manage to keep them in check, but nonetheless loss by 10, 71-61. Phillips lead the team with 13.

Game 6: SDSU (0-5) @ Georgia Southern (1-5)
We blow a 9 point lead with 1 min left, before McCuthison bailes us out with a 3 for the 37-34 halftime lead. We gain a 10 point lead in the 2nd, and actually manage to hold it for our first win of the year, 76-65. Yeah! Truscott leads all scorers with 18.

Game 7: Samford (2-5) @ SDSU (1-5)
We lose Truscott with an injury 7 mins in, but manage to take a 39-37 half time lead anyway. Despite Samford hitting 5-8 from 3 point range, including 2 late ones to tie, we squeak out the 65-62 win thanks to Courtney Jones timely free throw shooting. Jones finishes with 16.

Truscott is gone for 2 months with a broken arm. Great. Just when we were getting on the right track :(

We get our 2nd recruit, Center Antwan Silva (6-10, 202, ***) He's not rated, but he has Good skills, and an excellent potential.

With the injury, I move Jones to SF, and Alexander will play PF.

Game 8: SDSU (2-5) @ CSU (3-5)
We continue the momentum of the last 2 games, and Alexander's 12 points led us to a 41-33 half time lead. The Bucc's make it close toward the end, but we pull out the win 79-73. McCuthison finishes with 21, Alexander with 14, while Phillips gets 13 with 14 assists.

Game 9: DePaul (5-3) @ SDSU (3-5)
I make one lineup change, moving Alexander to C, and he responds with 8 points giving us a 37-24 half time lead. We have DePaul beat, then fail to register a point in our last 15 possessions, and it goes to overtime 59-59. What a load of crap! I expect everyones grades to drop, cause they sure won't be hearing anything for awhile after some choice yelling by me. Thankfully, we get off to an early start in OT, and hold on for the 72-66 win. McCuthison had 21 and 5 boards, while Campbell had 14 and 7.

Game 10: SDSU (4-5) @ Clemson (6-5)
We play fairly well offensively, and thanks to Jones and Campbell, who both get 12 1st half points, we hold a 40-39 lead at the break. We hold a 9 point lead late, but once again fail to hold it. McCuthison has 2 chances to win the game, a long three goes short, he gets the rebound, a 15 footer, in and out in the last second, and we lose 69-68. Jones led the way with 17 and 9.

We kick off conference play on the road to Air Force.

Game 11: SDSU (4-6) @ Air Force (7-3)
We’re finally playing well, and I think I’ve found the system to take us the rest of the way. So we build up an early 11 point lead, hold it through out the 1st half, and blow it in the last 2 mins. Sigh. Thanks to Jones’ 14 points, we do manage a 37-34 lead at the break, but this team is breaking my heart. We fail to add any points in the first 6 mins of the 2nd half. By the time we do, the Falcons have taken control of the game. Incredibly we fight back, and pull within 4 with 5 mins left to go. Alexander ties it at 67 with a base line jumper, with 1 min to go. We need a miss, and get it as Rainey misses the 5 footer. A time out, and Phillips hits the off balance for a 69-67 lead, 0:37 to play. We need to stop them. But don’t, as Radl ties it with a quick jumper. 4 seconds to play, Phillips misses the buzzer beater, and we go to OT, where we hit nothing, and watch the Falcons win 86-74. Jones finishes the game with 24 and 10, and we played well offensively except for 5 mins in the first, 5 mins in the 2nd, and 5 mins in overtime. :(

Both Utah and Air Force make the Bubble Watch lists. Utah gets a vote in the IP Poll.

Game 12: New Mexico (6-6,1-1) @ SDSU (4-7,0-1)
We play catch up most of the 1st half, and New Mexico pull away to a 36-29 half time lead. We’re never really in the game at all, and New Mexico widen the gap to win 75-60. Jones and McCuthison both finish with 12.

Game 13: Wyoming (3-10,0-3) @ SDSU (4-8, 0-2)
This is the type of game we need, and come out firing. We actually hold the lead, and GASP! build an 11-3 run in the final mins to head into the break up 43-30. McCuthison and Jones lead with 11 points. We run away in the 2nd as the defense holds them to only 34.5% shooting, and we take a much needed win, 79-61. McCuthison finishes with 21, Jones with 17, and Phillips finishes with 5 points, 11 boards, and 12 assists.

Our final recruit commits. SF Byron Greene. 6-7, 190lbs. 4*. Excellent Potential. #14 SF, #25 East, #86 Overall. 4.00 GPA. I might have run the program into the ground this year, but I think I did a pretty good job of stocking it for the future. :)

Game 14: SDSU (8-5, 1-2) @ BYU (9-5, 2-2)
We shoot an impressive 17 for 29 in the 1st half, but still trail BYU by one at the break, 37-36. We continue to play well offensively, and Phillips gives us a 5 point lead with 1:49 left in the game. BYU respond with 4 points, before Jones makes it a 3 point game with 0:41 on the clock. We need to stop them on D…and McCuthison comes up with the huge steal and foul. But misses! 0:30 left, still need a stop here…Davis cashes in from downtown, and it’s tied at 70. 11 seconds left, Phillips finds Alexander wide open…no good, but he draws the foul…shooting 2. Good! Good! 2 seconds left, BYU desperation shot no good, SDSU win 72-70. Phew! Jones finished strong with 19 and 8, while Alexander finished with 14 and the winning free.

Game 15: SDSU (6-8, 2-2) @ Utah (11-4, 4-1)
We play well, but Utah is just too strong for us, and take the 41-26 half time lead. At this point I just don’t wanna get blown out. That doesn’t happen though, and the Utes take the game 77-53. McCuthison finishes with 21 in a losing effort, while Phillips grabs 11 and 10 assists.

Game 16: UNLV (5-10, 2-3) @ SDSU (6-9, 2-3)
The defense do their job holding the Rebels to 9-26 from the floor in the first half. The offence however, only hits 12-32, so we have a scant 35-29 lead at the break. Jones has come to play, scoring 14 so far. UNLV match us shot for shot in the 2nd. It’s not pretty. But it’s all tied up at 60 when Campbell banks home the basket to put us up by 2 with less then 20 seconds left. UNLV time out. They move up the floor, quick three…it’s good, UNLV win 63-62. Jones finishes with 16 and 9, and that’s about it. Brutal loss.

Although v1.9 is out, I decided I would stay with v1.8a and we can upgrade at the end of the season when vtbub takes control (just in case there are any in season problems that pop up). Is that ok with everybody?

Game 17: Princeton (11-8) @ SDSU (6-10)
We take a much needed break from conference play to play the Tigers. Princeton grab 8 of their first 11 points off free throws, while we try to find our game. Thankfully, we do find it, and close out the half with a 12-2 run for a 37-30 half time lead. Phillips has 11 points with 5 assists in the first half. In the second half I lose both Carter and Jones to injury, seriously depleting my bench. Princeton’s game goes into the tank (they shoot 37% on the night) and although we gave them every chance to win, we take the victory instead 64-50. Phillips led all Aztecs with 18 and 7, while Jones and Campbell both added 12.

Carter is day to day with a pulled groin, which isn’t a big deal, but Courtney Jones our leading scoring is gone for 2 months with a broken leg, so his season is done. This trainer is bad luck. :(

Game 18: Utah (13-4, 5-1) @ SDSU (7-10, 2-4)
Carter is back, so he didn’t miss any games. Not that it will help us any. We actually make a game of it, and only trail the Utes 30-28 at the break. That’s as close as we get, however, as Utah opens up the 2nd half, and easily wins 63-52. McCuthison picks up the slack with 15, while Phillips grabs 11 with 9 boards and 8 assists.

Game 19: Brigham Young (11-7, 3-4) @ SDSU (7-11, 2-5)
We’re ice cold and shoot 7 for 25 in the 1st half to find ourselves all ready out of the game, down 36-17. We shoot 10-35 in the 2nd, and get embarrassed in our own building 75-40. McCuthison was the only player to show up with 13.

Losing sucks…:(

Game 20: Air Force (12-7, 5-3) @ SDSU (7-12, 2-6)
We come out cold, yet again, and trail the Falcons 31-24 at the half. I yell, I scream, I beg, I cry, I pray…just about everything at the half with these guys. I cannot figure out how to get the offence on track. Magically, that seems to work and we come out on fire in the 2nd half, take the lead, and hold it for the 68-60 win. All starters hit double digits while Eddie Evans (playing for an injured Jones) scores 17, and Alexander grabs 15 to halt our conference losing skid.

Game 21: Colorado State (6-14, 3-6) @ SDSU (8-12, 3-6)
Finally a team in worse shape then us! We hammer CSU early and build up a lead to take a 38-30 advantage into the break. Despite turning over the ball at will in the 2nd half, we manage to take a convincing 73-58 win, helped in large part to McCuthison’s 17 and Alexander’s 15, and CSU’s very poor shooting.

Some more good news as Jeremy Truscott returns from his broken arm to close out his collegiate career. Hopefully he is pumped.

Game 22: SDSU (9-12, 4-6) @ UNLV (10-11, 6-4)
An ugly 1st half sees a pretty tight game as we take a 32-29 lead at the break. McCuthison has the hot hand today, with 11 1st half points. No last min heroics this time, as we completely suck in the 2nd half, and UNLV spanks us 69-54. McCuthison finishes with 19, and that’s about it.

Edit: If the UNLV game looks different, it's cause it's a restart after a crash.

Game 23: SDSU (9-13, 4-7) @ New Mexico (11-11, 6-5)
We start hot, on a 13-1 run, but costly turnovers and inept shooting leads us to a 33-27 New Mexico lead at the break. I can’t do anything with this club, they just won’t listen to me. We try to make a comeback, but NMU open a 10 point advantage early in the 2nd, and that’s as close as we get all night, losing 75-61. McCuthison is the only player to show up again, as he gets 17.

Game 24: SDSU (9-14, 4-8) @ Wyoming (8-15, 4-8)
We finally play like we’re capable of, or the Cowboys are just horrible, and we open with a 11-2 run, followed by a 13-2 run, and end the half with a 12-0 run to lead 49-21 at the break. We continue to play well, and widen the gap for an easy 88-50 blowout. All the starters hit double digits, while Campbell lead all scorers with 18.

Game 25: SDSU (10-14, 5-8) @ Colorado State (8-16, 5-8)
So we broke the 10 win barrier, but even if we win we won’t get a .500 conference record. Still 6-8 would like nice, maybe prevent us from getting fired. Phillips goes down with an injury in the 3rd min, however, throwing a wrench into things. Despite that, we play ok and the Rams hold a 1 point lead thanks to a buzzer beater, 30-29 at the break. Unfortunately we don’t play too well in the 2nd, and let the Rams take our final conference game of the year 61-51. Truscott led the way with 15, while Eddie Evans came off the bench for 13.

Final MWC standings
Utah 13-1
New Mexico 8-6
UNLV 8-6
Air Force 7-7
Colorado State 6-8
Brigham Young 5-9
SDSU 5-9
Wyoming 4-10

Game 26: Western Illinois(7-19) @ SDSU (10-15)
Both teams are dead cold, and if not for 16-2 run with our subs on the court, the first half could have been the worst in college basketball history. We take the 18 point 30-12 lead into the break. The subs take us most of the way in the 2nd, and we hand WIU a 71-47 loss. Ben Murray led all scorers with 15 off the bench, while Dan Carter grabbed 10 in 20 mins.

Utah holds 22nd in the IP Poll.

Game 27: Pacific (12-16) @ SDSU (11-15)
Murray gets the start today, and his 9 points keeps the 1st half close, with the Tigers taking a 33-27 halftime lead. We let them run away with the 2nd, however, and even Truscott’s 13 2nd half points can’t help us, as we lose 75-63.

Next up, MWC Tourney.

Wyoming (8) vs #18 Utah (1)
SDSU (7) vs New Mexico (2)
Brigham Young (6) vs UNLV (3)
Colorado State (5) vs Air Force (4)

Game 28: SDSU (11-16) @ New Mexico (15-12)
We play the Lobos tight, and head into the break down 34-30. Murray leads the way once again with 8. It’s a completely different 2nd half though as we fail to get any points at all until the 8th min, and by then it’s all over. By the time the final buzzer rings on our season, it’s a 68-53 loss. Murray finished strong with 17 points, but nobody else decided to show up for this game. Truscott playing his final game gets 4 points in a 2 for 7 night. Brutal.

For crying out loud…Wyoming upsets Utah 79-78. BYU 75 over UNLV 73, and AF 70 over CSU 67. Seems fitting that ours was the only solid loss of the first round.

Wyoming carries on with the Cinderella story beating AF 72-65. If they win the tourney again this year, I’ll puke. BYU upsets New Mexico 66-64.

MWC Championship: Gah! Wyoming 78 over BYU 75.

Wyoming’s run comes to an end, as they lose 74-69. Utah advances with a 68-53 win.

Utah defeats #10 ranked Iowa State 63-61 to advance to the sweet 16, where their run ends with a 75-57 loss to 7th ranked UCLA.

No hall of fame players there, although we’re left to wonder how much better Truscott could have been if he wasn’t injured his whole college career.

Nonetheless, it’s a new era at SDSU. A new coach, a new outlook, and a new superstar…it’s time for the Bobby Walls era to begin!

Great! Looks like vt could be the coach that finally gets us to .500. Do you need help hosting the file?

vt, don't know if you'll see this in time. You mentioned that you would test out 1.19. Did you notice anything? In particular there seems to be a lot of talk at the .400 forums about a high volume of fouls by the guards in that version. Some stories sound ridiculously high, like 3-4 fouls in the first couple of mins. I'm not really concerned about the high 3's, as other people have pointed out since it seems to be in-line with the NCAA, but the high foul rates for guards concerns me a bit. I think SirFozzie is running 1.19 in his BC dynasty as well. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this, gentlemen, and anybody else running 1.19 as well.

I don't see it too much, plus the fact.. if you're coaching.. foul trouble happens.. and you just have to sub the players out. :)

Good job klay.

I am running 1.19. Haven't given it much of a run through, but seems OK for now.

Klay,

Fouls seem very close to right, nothing out of line.
