Werewolf haters cry, it's another one!
Up into the mountains, a horrible gateway is on the verge of being opened to a distance place. Magic has gone awry, the ancient seals that protects humankind from this terrible evil have been heavily weakened. Those who have bonded with the Demons move into action, slipping themselves into the key places to pave the way for their masters arrival. The few remaining mages, sacrificing themselves to reinforce the power of their magic, seal off the entirety of the fortress. None may enter or exit until the threat has been ended. Unfortunately, the now-dead mages did not bother to tell anyone else about this predicament they thrust you all in. None are safe from the reckoning. Evil must be purged from this castle, or all is lost. Unless you are evil. Then it's time to get rid of those pesky good-for-nothing soldiers.
But there's more. Those strange, enigmatic creatures known only as the Elementals have taken a keen interest in this event. Clearly they have seen the possible re-emergence of demonkind into this world. However, their motives, as always, are unclear at best. The only possible hope for either side is to curry their favor with sacrifice. Perhaps they are the key to winning this conflict!
The Humans
The force of good, happiness, cheese, and all things shiny. The humans must find those among them who would tear open the gateway and allow the demons entry into this world. Luckily, this being a key defensive outpost, many of both military and magical skill are located here. Unfortunately, with everyone being a suspect, their skills and allegiances are unknown. There is one bit of good news, though. A demonic servant dies in both a spectacular and gruesome way, making their exit from this world quite obvious to any observer. Now if we could just find out who is who...
The Demon Servants
You sold your soul for power, you were promised immortality upon the return of your masters, and that moment is almost upon you. You have hidden your allegiances for ages, and now just a few goody two shoes stand between you and immortality. You may once again laugh maniacally without fear of persecution. You will be able to kick old people whenever you want. No one will tell you when to clean your room. Oh yes, soon you will have it all.
The Elementals
Immortal creatures of immense power, and immense enigma. Most people who have tried to understand them have long since gone stark-raving made. They are big, they are powerful, and they are there. Why they have taken interest in this event is uncertain, but what IS known about them is they can be appeased by certain sacrifice. If one of proper magical skill sacrifices the right living creature a the proper time of night, the Elementals just may grant that side a Favor. As for what they get out of the deal...who knows.
That said, while they are immortal in the sense that they do not die of age/disease, these creatures can be killed, though it is not easy. An elemental being threatened (ie - is lynched or murdered) will immediatly revert to their natural form, with the ensuing wave of power preventing their demise. However, once they have been reduced to their true form, they may be executed by either side at their leisure. Of course, also note, they can expend their vast powers in other ways. Pissing off an elemental is a sure way of getting yourself killed.
(In plain english, elementals ignore the first lynch vote OR night kill directed their way. Their role is revealed when it happens, and then they are just as vulnerable as anyone else. In futher plain english, they also have a once-per-game-per-elemental power to flat out kill another player.)
The Druid / Warlock
On each of the two main sides, there exists one player (who both are known to the Elementals) who has the power to sacrifice an animal once per night to the Elementals. Every night, the Elementals, being the wild and crazy creatures they are, decide among themselves what they would like to have sacrificed to them. If the Druid or the Warlock has chosen wisely and sacrificed the proper beast, their side will receive a Favor (tm). These favors come in various shapes and sizes, and will mostly benefit that side (some more than others). They last for a maximum of 1 turn (some are one shots, some last a night, some last a day, some last a full day/night phase), and the general effects are kept secret except to those involved.
(In plain english, the druid/warlock chooses an animal from a provided list. If they choose the animal the Elementals chose as their 'preferred' creature, they get a Favor. If they don't, they get nothing that night.)
Victory Conditions
Humans: Execute all Demons Servants.
Demons: Achieve a 1:1 ratio with Humans. Elementals are NOT counted as humans.
Elementals: Secret.
Rules
Two phases, Day and Night. 12/24 Hour Deadlines will be in effect. After Night(0), there will be 24 hours until the lynching deadline, then once the lynch post is made there will be 12 hours until the Night phase ends. Rinse, repeat.
Most players have a special role, though some do not. The special roles will NOT be revealed on death (on either side), with the exception of the Druid/Warlock. Note, special role or not, the SIDE the player is on will be revealed, just not their powers (if any). Also note, players without a special role MAY gain a special power during the course of the game, if certain things happen.
During the Day phase, everyone votes to lynch one player, as per normal werewolf games.
In the event of a tie, special (and secret) rules will apply.
Votes not in bold DO NOT COUNT.
Votes on an edited post DO NOT COUNT.
Votes after the deadline DO NOT COUNT.
Please unvote and re-vote in DIFFERENT posts, for my sanity.
During the Night phase, the Demons conspire to kill one player, and all players may use their Night actions, if any.
Warning: Do not PM with the dead players. They may still have an active role in this game after being executed. And if you ARE killed, don't go away. You may still have a part to play.
---
Signups are now open. The game will not start till at least Tuesday, but it will further not start till the current WW game ends. We'll see what everyone's thoughts are on starting day.
This game is condusive to being fairly good sized, and a lot of goofy shit can go down, because, well, I've enjoyed the weird games played in the past. :)

Good stuff - sounds like we have a few games in the pipeline from some new DMs.
I was planning to sit a few out after being viewed/eaten Day 1 the past couple of games but the idea to extend playing time after death makes me want to give this a spin. So lets give this a shot.

OK, first game-related question for discussion.
If an elemental is revealed after shrugging of a lynching/night kill is there any reason for either side to take this entity down? Without understanding the nature of "favors" it is hard to determine where the value-add would be.
CW, when an elemental is revealed do we learn if he is the "human" or "demon" elemental? Or just an elemental and it is up to us to discern which one?
Passacaglia
12-27-2005, 03:24 PM
I was under the impression that elementals weren't human or demon -- they were their own thing. I could be wrong, though.

The elementals are not affiliated with either side. They are independant entities who help/hinder both sides, and have their own agendas.
If you're speaking of the Druid/Warlock (the "mortal" player on both sides who actually try and barter favors from the elementals), yes. The Druid is on the Human side, the Warlock is the Demonic equivalent.
Edit: Those 2 (the druid and the warlock) are the ONLY "special" roles that will be revealed. For everyone else, they will simply be labeled "Human" or "Demon" (along an appropriate description of their death, which may give some clues, but I will never flat out say/describe a role upon death except for those two.)

CW, thanks for the clarification. It was indeed the druid/warlock descriptions that I had stuck in my mind for the elementals in terms of good/evil roles.
OK, so lets explore the warlock/druid roles with the elemental(s) ...
If both the warlock and druid sacrifice correctly and there is only one elemental would both sides gain a favor? Or would only one favor be granted?

Im guessing two elementals, 1 druid/warolock(1 of each), 2 other demons, and 8 humans...of those id say 3-4 have special roles(doctor, seer, etc.) so were really only looking at like 3-4 normal villagers...if im right, we already have a lot of liers...
As for the elementals, once they are killed once i think they might still be a good kill somewhat as they have their own agendas...their agendas could differ from our vastly....id still say take a shot for a demon though.
Time for me to review the player list to myself to review past games playing styles and contrast with this one

That makes more sense to me (especially once it was clarified that the Warlock is a demon with an extra ability). I wonder about three elementals -- they already get one free pass and the ability to make a kill (which it would seem likely to do immediately after being identified), plus the "vast power" that CW mentioned at the top which it would make sense to think that there are some sort of additional self-preservation secret power. So basically, I'm thinking that they're powerful enough to only be two of them.
And as I typed that, it occured to me to wonder if it's a good idea for me to be speculating about this....... ;)
No kidding, I thought the same thing.

As the sun slowly rises admist the snow capped mountains, the remaining guardians of this fortress commence their unenviable task of hunting down the traitors. Who will be the first to go? And more importantly...will the forces of good kill one of their own, or will they manage to track down those who would unleash the minions of Hell?
As the gathered forces assemble for the first of many days, there is already a sign of carnage. Well, if you count a pair of dead animals carnage.
Atop a stone altar, a mass of filthy, bloody stained fur, the rapidly decaying remains of a Yak lay silent. Was it a diseased yak, worthy of mounting? Was it an offer worthy of the elementals? Only the great powers know.
Skewered across a blood-inscribed pentagram is the rotting carcass of a Goat. While it is not nearly as awe-inspiring as the might of the Yak, the potent Goat-esqueness of the offering cannot be ignored. But, while mere mortals could be impressed by this, were the elementals?

Because rolling 2d6 produces a much higher liklihood that numbers in the middle will be rolled than numbers that are very high or very low. that's not what i said, and not what i did
I rolled 1 die once to determine a group of 6 (1-2 = 1-6, 3-4 = 7-12, and 5-6 = 13-18), then tossed it again to pick one in that group.

But, while mere mortals could be impressed by this, were the elementals?

id be betting its just how coffee differentiates the good(stone alter) from bad(blood laden pentagram)...from that id take our guy did the yak, theirs the goat, and id assume from hes writing ours was more the the elementals liking though thats pure speculation...i think, until our druid comes out and tells us(which i hope he never does as the bad guys will kill him), the meaning of all this remain a secret. Honestly, id just hope the yak was what the elementals wnated and go about day one, as coffee made it clear in the rules even if we did gain favor it would only be known to those involved(druid/warlock i presume). Question. While I'm not going to change the deadline this time around, would you rather I monkey'd with the deadlines if the night actions go through early? Always gonna keep a 24 hour day, but, if like last night night actions get to me at 9pm, do a 24 hour run from there. Or, stick to the current more rigid schedule?
Only reason I'm hesistant to make it a quasi 'roving' schedule is the fact that a "standard" 9am to 9pm night action window seems like it'd be more convenient than a 9pm to 9am run.
Lemme know what ya'll think there.

ya it's usually pretty quiet.
In my mind you always want to lynch on day 1 (and in this game it doesn't appear that there is an option for us not to, unless we hit an elemental and then he is saved by his power). This helps establish voting paterns for future use. I'm sure someone might disagree with me on this (most likely a bad guy :) ), but I feel it does help.

the trend is that the quiet ones get lynched first too.
1) because they don't come to defends themselves and
2) people see them as not only not helping in the discussion, but
hurting it by not participating.
then the vote turns to people who are too helpful...like I'm doing for you now....so I'll just keep quiet, but not too quiet for today I think. :)

I felt like that yesterday speculating on the elementals, then decided I didn't want them to notice me.
Funny about the trend, since that second point seems like a catch-22: There's really nothing to discuss, but if you don't do it you're not participating!

I've been thinking. Dubbs fake empath play last game seems like it could be quite valuable. In a game such as this having an empath around seems possible. I think, therefore, it would behoove us to each make the statement:
"I am not a Demon on day X" where Day X is the current day. In this way if there is an empath he will have reliable statements to go from. I choose am not a Demon since if someone is an elemental that isn't really bad, per se, for the human side. If, however, someone is a demon, well we want them gone. Failure to make such a statement could, in and of itself, be suspicious.
So I will start things off: I am not a Demon on Day 1.

My first thought as well. We'll have to remember to be careful if/when something like that happens. Just going off of CW's promise that 'dead people may still have a role' (forget the exact wording), I think this game is going to be very unpredictable.
Anyway, I am not a demon on day 1.

I got like 5 votes on first day of X-com due to godzilla dynasty and my fictional guys tendency to die on every mission he went on. I was always first dead lol...they didnt kill me though, luckily since i was the Alien Leader Damn hoopsguy got me killed with his smart thinking.
Just remember, day one votes are random until they aren't random :)
That was my first full werewolf game. I had jumped in an earlier one as an alternate and let some of the more experienced players talk me off of hanging a wolf (Jeff) my first time out. And we got owned by BrianD in a fake role ... good times.

My first game too, and I almost had you guys when i posted the villager role from the converted guy...soo close! :p
I can't even remember my first one. I remember i did a random number generator for my first vote and everyone jumped my case for it. I had never followed the games before, so I didn't know people hated it.

I don't know what would be wrong with that... day 1 all we have is gut instinct and guesswork.
We do have some info (the description of the sacrifice), but I don't know how to tell what it means.

The real problem with using a random number generator is that it provides no insight in future days about the vote. As voting is the main tool we have, having some reason, which can be used in defense or accusation later on is important.

I think the deadline is tomorrow am. Schmidty may get replaced - or not, and he may end up lynched.

I think this is the best voting pattern for the humans, a 3-way tie. There's probably at least a 50/50 chance that one of those guys is a demon, forcing some demons to move their votes around.
Let's see how this shakes out.

Great, I read this right after changing my vote.
So forgive me for what may be a stupid question, but as the first day first game guy here, why would this be a 50/50 chance (3 guys with 3 votes if we assumed as earlier 16 total players and 3 demons?) and why would it force a demon's hand?
Barkeep49
12-28-2005, 09:59 PM
Assuming 3 demons there is a 40% chance that none of them are demons and a 60% chance that at least one is a demon.

With your vote it's now Schmidty 4, two other guys 3. It doesn't neccesarily force a demon's hand even as a tie, but they are sure to be careful to make sure that a demon doesn't get lynched on day 1. In the following days, we can examine those day 1 votes to gather clues about who may be demonic.

Actually, since I had originally voted Dacman it would now be Schmidty 4, Blade 3 and Dacman 2. I'd be willing to switch it back to Dacman if it's gonna be seen as suspicious later......like I said, I just switched it in the first place since it seemed the spot was open anyways.

Yeesh, had Blade and SnDvls bring up my name on day 1. I guess that is a good rep to have in a WW game??? I am a villager and I haven't picked up on any baddies yet. BTW, I was the first to bring up the goat (demons pick) back in post #106. Thought CW's post was pretty clear to understand myself.
just wanted to see you post again to make sure you were still around. ;)
I'd move, but I don't want to seem like I'm jumping on a bandwagon either. If I hit Schmidty I'm piling on. If I move to dacman I force a tie and if my memory serves me right a decision that we don't know the outcome (possibly the elementals get to decide??) and if I go to Blade it allows someone to set me up later by jumping on him for the lynch if he turns out good. I think I'll stay on you king...unless someone comes up with something pretty dramatic.

After a long, long, LONG series of discussions, arguments, in-fighting, paranoia, rants about dice, and after a tasty dinner of leftover yak & goat, you finally agree that an example must be made. Schmidty is dragged, silent as ever, to the massive executioner, who does not even give him the honor of a final request before lopping off his head. It rolls with a satisfying thud, and ends up splashing into a bowl of leftover goat stew.
Unfortunately, the tell tale signs of a person who has sold his soul to the minions of hell are not present this day. It becomes quickly apparent Schmidty was an untainted human through and through. A quick search of his quarters reveals nothing of major interest, merely a suit of battered & worn armor, and an old, blood-stained sword.
As you finish searching through Schmidty's room, you return to the courtyard to see a large piece of parchment nailed to a wall. Written in ornate script, it says...
The Norse god of thunder, Thor, had a chariot that was pulled by several goats. At night when he would set up camp, Thor would eat the meat of the goats, but take care that all bones remained whole. Then he would wrap the remains up, and in the morning, the goats would always come back to life to pull the chariot. When a mortal who was invited to share the meal broke one of the goats' legs to suck the marrow, however, the animal's leg remained broken in the morrow, and the mortal was forced to serve Thor as a servant to compensate for the damage.

To me the real turning point was King's vote for Schmidty as that changed the tide. If he'd gone for dacman it would have ensured that as a lynch. As it stands, I don't blame king for his vote, obviously as I voted the same way, despite our having failed to find a demon.

So does anyone have any significant trust built up as of yet?
If not trust, are there people that are moving towards highly distrust?
Reasons for either would help generate some discussion. I understand if people may want to wait until after night actions are complete to go down this road.

Nothing significant yet, just a couple of hunches which I'm waiting for after night to bring up. Day 1 vote was more interesting than I'm used to.

Schmidty having the armor and sword may be indicative of some kind of protector role - which would obviously be bad news for the humans if he is dead (and not recoverable).

i was wondering if anyone else picked up on this...i am a lot more worried about the fact that he had armor and a sword than i am about his head landing in the goat soup (which i took to be CW's creative juices flowing out of control)

I would just like to point out to Barkeep that my vote for St. Cronin was not due to me wanting to throw out an early vote, it was b/c of his use of a random number generator.
I do have a hunch at this point, but I'm not sure if I'm quite ready to come forward with it at this point without seeing what he does today.
Last game at the end of the day I posted a summary of who voted for who and a brief summary of the explanation. I don't know if anyone else found it helpful, but it was helpful for me to review the posts with votes, so I'm doing it yet again.

I don't remember a guardian ever actually saving anybody. I think seer/witness types are much more important.

I have fixed it. I read your post as the first part being the reason for your vote with the second part unrelated. With your explanation, it makes sense that the first part is explaining why you're voting with the second part the reason for your actual vote :).

Well last game it was helpful knowing who to kill or not kill. This game it'll be useful for the purposes of good :).
