I'm heading down to Baltimore in a minute to visit a few friends (also Rutgers alumni) and watch the bowl game.

My heart says an upset win for Rutgers while my head says "please don't embarass yourselves."

8.30PM Eastern tonight on ESPN... be there!

As a Virginia Tech alum I can recall the 51-50 games we used to lose to Rutgers every year in Frank Beamer's first years as head coach. I'm rooting for Rutgers tonight and, maybe in a few years, a BCS bowl as Big East champs.

Every pass was either an interception or a touchdown and they nipped us in the last minute.

Yes, that seems to sum up Fortay's Rutgers career in a nutshell... :D

The Sun Devils are gonna crush Rutgers....I hope.

No really I'll be at the game it should be good.
Rutgers runs the ball well and that is our weekness, however we have an awesome passing game and Rutgers has some young DBs that we might be able to exploit. Should be fun to watch at home or in person (like me :D )

Gonna head on over to Game On near Fenway for the Rutgers Alumni Bowl Party. Should be pretty fun as they will be giving away RU stuff (no free drinks/food though). Hopefully we'll be doing shots for every RU TD.

wow you missed out then as we were +13 or so earlier in the week, but like 20 of our players got the flu bug this week. All but 2 (according to todays paper) are over it, but there are always after effects too. RU was playing it safe, but if any of their players got it in the last two days it will hurt them tonight for sure.

I difference will be who controls the ball. ASU will put up points fast whild RU will try and ram it down the field with a solid running game against a week D. It may come down to the lost team with the ball wins. IF ASU can get a run game going and thier D stops RU then ASU wins big.

Actually it is better to only have to give 9.5 than 13. Didn't know about the flu though. I guess I should do some research, but in my bid to bet on every bowl game it seems like the less I know about the teams the more successful I have been.

oh I know about the 9 to 13, I just would have layed the +13 on RU in this one....if it had stayed that way then with what I know now. You probally still have a good bet even with the flu thing.

It will be almost like a home game for ASU anyhow with it being just 45 mins from Tempe.

You were the one bragging about the Pac 10's defenses. If you want some info on Big Ten defenses check out Penn State and Ohio State. You might have to scroll down a bit to find the first pac 10 team, they are ranked #39 in total defense, the USC Trojans.

I AM RAGGING ON THE PAC 10 DEFENSES. As does everyone else. ASU has given up 27 pts to a Rutgers team that lost to Illinois team. Look at the big picture Bug. Northwestern is dead last, but I would bet you that there are a lot more PAC 10 teams near the bottom than near any other conference.

The PAC-10 is by far and away the most skilled offensive conference so it's not so much a matter of the PAC-10 defenses sucking as the PAC-10's offensives being dynamic

My earlier point was that the bowl games should tell whether or not that is true. So far, playing against Arizona State has made Rutgers look like a dynamic offense and, even though they have a few standouts in Leonard and Rice, that wasn't really the case during the regular season when they were the #50 offense in the nation.

I'd have to agree here, you cannot rate how bad a defese is solely on the defense you need to look at the offenses that those teams have played.

Rudy Carpenter threw for 467 yards and four touchdowns and Arizona State amassed an Insight Bowl-record 678 yards Tuesday night, holding off Rutgers for a wild 45-40 victory.

The teams combined 1,210 yard, a record for any bowl game. The old mark of 1,143 yards was set by USC and Texas A&M in the 1977 Bluebonnet Bowl.

Cant say I remember when BYU had a stingy defense and a lackluster offense.

Im afraid that UCLA-Northwestern won't be a defensive showdown either as both teams are ranked Top-10 in offense and near the bottom in defense

So, I watched the first half, missed the third quarter and watched the 4th. Why wasn't Rice in? He looked so good in the first half, minus his fumble in the 2nd(i think it was the 2nd).

On the macro level I would say Rutgers succeeded in not embarassing the university.

But having seen the game, the defense was pathetic. I've never been more frustrated than watching the pass coverage - simply put, they could not cover anyone. Now this wouldn't have bothered me so much if we were getting some pass rush, but we weren't. I think they let up about 700 yards on defense... and that is absolutely an embarrasment, especially when your head coach is the defensive coordinator.

Offensively they played very well in the first half, although that Ray Rice fumble killed us, and was probably the turning point in the game (I said it at the time to my firends, and looking back i think it's what got ASU back in the game when Rutgers could have taken a commanding lead).

BUt as is our style, the team looked like shit in the second half. Schiano has really got to address whatever the problem is that cause Rutgers to repeatedly play worse in the second half than in the first. The offense simply couldn't click at all, to the point where i was even able to predict the second of the back-to-back false start penalties. The game reminded me of the Syracuse game from 2 years ago... we totally choked it away.

One small victory was the Knights covering the spread with that last TD that i would consider about 50% garbage time.

Overall I'm happy for the seniors, but I just have the nagging feeling that Schiano simply is not getting everything he can out of the talent he has on-board. I think we return most starters, with QB being the only position i'm extremely worried about (Teel looked like SHIT this year).

Tough end to a good season. I hope we can build on it in 2006 rather than taking a step back.

dola... and Ito, our kicker.. had the best game of his career. I though they were nuts to try the 52 yarder, but he fucking drilled it with plenty of room to spare. I hope next year he can finally put it all together.

That was a great performance by Rutgers. When you factor in that they were playing in Arizona State's backyard and that not a single player on the team had ever prepared for a bowl game before, I think you have to be reasonably happy.

Watching the game, they promoted the hell out of Schiano, which will help recruiting. Hopefully Rutgers will retain him, even if the team's record slips a bit in the next season or two. Continuity will be important in getting that program established.

I should note that isnt neccessarily the problem...nobody could stop ASU's offense this year...we racked up yards on USC, LSU, and even Oregon and UCLA when we lost...Our offense tore apart everybody...The only difference was INTs, as in those we threw a few and lost and we didnt here and won.

In the week leading up to the game he signed an extension through 2012, so I think he will definitely be around a while. Also, we start playing Notre Dame annually for like 6 years starting in a few years. They're going to play the games at Giants Stadium to generate some $$$. If we can get to the point where we can compete in those games it would be huge for teh school.
