You gotta be shi ... nah, I guess you're not.

That's sad (but I'm glad I kept my money in my pocket).

Because it is such an unplayable game without the patch?

I was playing it a bit ago, great game without the patch for me.

And I understand a company giving employees time off for the holidays, guess others feel it is unreasonable though. We all have are little things though, as I get annoyed with MP leagues taking time off for the holidays. :)

It is unreasonable to give time off to the extent that your operations are for practical purposes shut down for the better part of a week, when you are in a customer-service business.

I know - this doesn't make any sense to me. The game prepatch is still amazing - what show-stopping, dust-gathering bugs are there?

It is NOT about the patch per se, as much as it is that if one purchases the game via download they do not get the same product as those that purchase the disk. If this is the case then the pricing should reflect that or a statement forewarning of this would be inciteful PRIOR to said purchase. That is all, Im playing the crap out of it but the knowledge that because I chose to buy via download I have a less superior product than someone else who may have paid no more than me sucks.

As for the MP league's time off...who would do such a thing!!? :)

The only thing I'm missing is the speed that the "threading" option gives me. Otherwise, yeah I haven't needed the patch for any actual gameplaying issues.

But I agree with Flasch...it sucks that we are getting penalized for going the downloading route.

One thing you guys need to take into account, this is the first time FM has gone the digidownload route (atleast in recent times, maybe there was an early attempt at it i don't know about). There is going to be some kinks in the system the first time, I think that is understandable.

Another thing is just the bad timing of this patch connected with Digital River being the online 'distributor'. The holidays cause slow downs, and Digital River (who wouldn't have been my top choice to handle this to say the least) has decided to take their time because of them. From what i have read it sounds like this is the problem, Digital River combined with Christmas. SI is not intentionally saying screw the download guys, they can wait.

I won't argue that point at all.

This is the first iteration of FM that I've purchased the "American" version. For CM03/04 and FM2005 I purchased from Europe and paid more for the shipping. For future versions I'll do that again rather than mess with the digital download stuff.

First I bought my copy of wsm at gamestop so I have the disk and am patched. But I did want to say that these guys having to wait because someone needed the whole week or two off for the holidays is rediculous (a word I hate to use because it seems so overdone on any forum but I think it applies nicely here).

The thing is these DR guys were off starting the Monday or Tuesday before Christmas so we're not talking about Christmas Eve or Christmas day here and it appears they are still not working. They have chosen to protect retail software as a way to make money and when you work retail this requires someone is on duty the week BEFORE Christmas, that's just the way it is. Who knows they may even want to have someone on duty the week after Christmas to deal with any problems that may come up for people that bought
games they protect as Christmas presents. How would you feel if you bought something at Best Buy and had a problem, went to get it taken care of only to be told sorry were closed until Jan 2nd?

I would assume that this would not have happened if elicense were in charge of protecting wsm. I only hope SI can express their displeasure enough to Sega that the wsm and ehm accounts are taken away from DR and given to a company that actually cares about their customers.

Thank god that SI was able to leave ootpbm with elicense instead of being forced by sega to go with DR.

Good points.

I in no way want anyone to mistake what I say as me defending Digital River. I would never do that, I don't like them. Really my main point is a two parter...the holidays are helping screw this up (in conjunction with DR) and this is the first time this game has been through this process. Those two things kind of led me to believe things wouldn't be real smooth a couple of weeks ago, so maybe that is why I am taking this better then others. I have the download version and am waiting.

To put things into my standard prose ..... we will be reviewing all feedback from customers of the digi-download version and will consider how to improve things for next version in due course.

(sounds nearly professional that doesn't it ;) )

I, for one, am having a very good time with my 'less superior' version. And I still don't recall hearing if the threading issue has been fixed, since it seemed only to be in the DR version for some reason. That, and my 'keepers constantly getting injured (untill my third (current) season...Robbo has been healthy all year) was a bit annoying, wasn't sure if that was a bug or just bad luck.

Anyway, there are some people in some countries where the game isn't even sold. So be happy you're able to get a copy, instead of constantly complaining.

A funny thing about Digital River is that I notice a gushing article heaping praise on them in the local paper almost every other month. They must be dumping some serious cash on their publicity agent.

I cringe every time I think how many people are duped, and keep telling myself that sooner or later their house of cards will come crashing down.

Digital River blows. Period.

Either go to viatech (which has a proven record in the text sim market, just ask your co-worker, Markus) or have Sega clear more shelf space stateside.

They should dump it into some extra server space to get the fucking patch up ;)

There is a thread on these forums already about this; in short the exe has to go to Digi River and get "wrapped" by them and they've gone into holiday mode so we're left waiting. With all other digital providers (trymedia and e-license) we are doing it in-house

Again, apologies but it's out of the hands of SI

We're using E-License on OOTPBM 2006
We've used Softwrap for the original EHM, which we then moved to Trymedia

You could say that we've evaluated them all.

Does it make any sense for each game to have its own copy protection system? Wouldn't it be more efficient to standardize on one process? I would imagine that it would also provide SI with a better pricepoint based on the increased volume.

Marc Vaughan
12-28-2005, 06:51 AM
CraigSca - I'd like us to standardise upon one system in the long-term, at the moment this hasn't been possible unfortunately.

Marc Duffy
12-28-2005, 09:48 AM
The long term aim is to move to one system but we've had a look at all of them now. E-License and Trymedia are far and away the better options for us so far.

You have to remember that this is now just the second year of doing full on digital releases, it's been a long process and we're only just finding out for ourselves the pros and cons of the systems.

Again, apologies but it's out of the hands of SIyou know, if there's one thing I do in my everyday life, it's to try and learn lessons out of everything that may go wrong, as tiny as the wrong may be. It could be that next time I go from a place to another on the road, I won't use that shortcut because it's actually making the trip longer, or other stuff, like never buying a particular brand of electronic products. Now, my main hope is that you guys at SI, whom I hold in very, VERY high esteem, have learned something out of the crappy mess: you're never better served than by your own self.

Reading between the lines for everyone here, if trymedia and e-license means you are in total control of the "wrapping" part of the treatment, and with with Digital River, you are left waiting for them to come back from Holiday, when they went on frigging holiday mode on December 20 then only one lesson is to be learned from all of this... NO MORE DIGITAL RIVER IN THE FUTURE!!! (or more generally, no more of anybody who keeps the process out of your hands...)

Sorry for the ranting, I'm off my soap box now, you can go back to enjoying your holiday season (or whatever non religious people wanna call it)...

Yes sir it is. Marc posted it in the FM review thread earlier. I am finally done downloading and installing it too. Ended up taking 3 hours to download, a little more maybe. Thankfully it wasn't the 9 it said for a while.
