You can read about the 2001-08 seasons by following this link (http://dynamic2.gamespy.com/~fof/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=001368).

I will now pick up with the 2008-09 season:

2008-09 SEASON

7 TV games this coming season - one on the Decue and the rest on the Trey.

Coaching rating remains at C, and the board is patient (for now). Five job openings, all with bad teams. Tempting, but the AD is offering me a 3-year contract to stay, so I'll stay.

Assistant Scott Townsend had been with us for several years, but he got the opportunity to become the head at New Mexico, so I had to let him go. We also replace Andy Collier. Our new assistants are:

Bobby Goodwin (salary 30) - A- average positional development, AA coach, A recruiter from the Midwest. Obviously worth his pay; wish I had two more like him. He'll work on the offensive side of the ball, since I think we need more help there.

Reginald West (salary 23) - B- average positional development, CC coach, B recruiter from the Midwest. West is a small step up from Collier and is a bit expensive for his talents. He is, however, useful, so we'll put him on the recruiting trail.

That shoves Dunkley (C) to the defensive job.

No other staff changes.

A tiny bit of development. Holland figures to be a force.

Starters:

Forwards - Dixon, Stephens, and Giles
Guards - Sheppard & Holland

Redshirting - Brown

We'll play a little half court press this year.

Non-conference schedule (teams with very low prestige, except as noted):

Preseason: Sam Houston, LA Lafayette, Texas (elite), UTEP, TCU (low), Chattanooga, SMU (low), Rice
Other: Yale

We should be able to contend with this schedule. Another 17-18 win season is not improbable.

Four scholarships to give out. One player lists us as his #3 school. Unfortunately, he's a real loser. Still, we'll put all the effort we can into getting him. As for the rest, we're going to change strategies a little. Since all our coaches are from the Midwest, we'll put our efforts there.

Week 2 - Upset by Sam Houston, but right the ship against LA LA. Gotta love early season cupcakes. We change strategies to play man defense and get out of the press.
Week 3 - We take down Texas 84-73 for our biggest win ever! We also win easily over the previously undefeated UTEP. Gotta be happy with the season so far.
Week 4 - Lost two shootouts to TCU and Chattanooga. We really should have beaten both of them. That evens our record for the season at 3-3. We get the news that Rashod Brown and Darrell Rowe have been suspended due to bad grades. Brown was redshirting anyway, so no big deal. And Rowe is the last man on the bench and hadn't played. Somehow I think we'll survive this.
Week 5 - Taken out by SMU but come back with a win against Rice. We head to the Christmas break even.
Week 7 - Lost to Alcorn State, but beat Jackson State. 1-1 in the SWAC, and 5-5 overall.
Week 8 - Beat Grambling and then lost to Southern. Our record is still even steven. Rowe is back, but Brown still has subpar grades.
Week 9 - Another split - lost to Arkansas-PB, but beat Miss. Valley St. 3-3 in the conference, 7-7 overall. .500 is not going to get it done. We need a hot streak.
Week 10 - Defeated Alabama St. easily but were blown out by Bama A&M just as easily. The see-saw continues.
Weel 11 - Lost to Texas Southern in our only game of the week. That puts us in the middle of the SWAC at 4-5, with an 8-9 overall record. We were hoping for better.
Week 12 - Up and down again - lost to A-PB, then a victory against MVSU. Brown is now eligible, not that that will make any difference.
Week 13 - Won the rematch against Texas Southern, but found a way to lose to Yale. 6-6 in the SWAC, 10-11 overall.
Week 14 - Lost to Alcorn St. but beat Jackson St. in a near rerun of week 7.
Week 15 - Lost to Bama St., but defeated Bama A&M. At 8-8 in conference play, this puts us in a virtual tie with four other teams (MVSU is at 8-9). We can't finish any lower than 7th, and we can move all the way to 3rd with a couple of wins and some help. We now have our goals; let's see if we can execute.
Week 16 - Arrrrgh. Lost two straight heartbreakers to Grambling and Southern.

We end the regular season with an 8-10 mark in the SWAC, 12-15 overall. This gives us the #7 seed in the tournament. We play on the opening day against #10 seed Jackson State (5-13, 10-17). This is not as advantageous as it sounds, since we've played poorly at home (5-11). Jackson State has been even worse on the road (3-8). But this season we've beaten them in both places, so we're hopeful. We cruise to a relatively easy 76-59 victory to get us off to a good start. Sheppard paced our scorers with 20.

That gets us a date with #2 seed Alcorn State (12-6, 19-8). Their chances of going to postseason play are good even if they don't beat us. We'll try to remind them of this. They swept us in the regular season, but that was then... and you know the rest. Yes! We win going away, 86-74. Sheppard led us again with 22.

Now we're in the semis against third seed Grambling (10-8, 17-11). We blew them out on the road, but lost at home. Apparently we're fairly evenly matched. A win would get us to .500, but more imporantly, it would get us to the finals. For some reason, we're playing at home. Woohoo! Our cinderella run continues with a 71-68 triumph. Holland had 22 to lead us in scoring.

This leads to my first conference final against Alabamaa State, the #8 seed (7-11, 16-14). They've been a scoring machine, averaging over 90 points in their SWAC tourney wins. We split the season series with each team winning on the road. We can do this... No, no, no! We held them to 61, but we could only score 50 as we shot a horrible 21 of 80 from the floor.

And so ends our 15-16 season.

Holland made the all-conference team and the 2nd team nationally. Great job, Maurice!

Meanwhile, Alabama State is the #12 seed in the South. Arkansas-Pine Bluff (17-1, 21-7) is made the #10 seed down South. Alcorn State made the ACT.

Final 4: North Carolina(2), Boston College(8), Missouri(4), Tennessee(7). The Volunteers get the championship banner for their stadium.
ACT Winner: Georgia

We were #3 on PG Joe Jackson's list, but we ended up winning his services for the next 4 or 5 years. Too bad he's not very good. We get three walkons about as good as he is.

Holland wasn't taken in the draft, which was a disappointment. The other seniors didn't even get a look.

NEXT: Can we continue to improve?

That post season run really had me excited there. I hope next season goes well.
