1.1 Cincinnati Bengals select QB Carson Palmer

I think Palmer can be worthy of this pick. I hope they let him sit a least a year. I watched him carve up a few teams this year and he has the size and skills needed to succeed. He is very strong and accurate. He is coming from a pro style offense in college similar to what he would run in Cincinnati. This is a case of the best player at one of my needs, but not the biggest need.

After much speculation...

we have a trade!

Carolina receives Houston's:
1st round pick - #3 overall
3rd round supplemental pick - #83 overall
3rd round pick (from Atlanta) - #88 overall

Houston receives Carolina's:
1st round pick - #9 overall
2nd round pick - #45 overall
3rd round pick - #76 overall

The Panthers are now on the clock!

The Carolina Panthers will announce tomorrow at nine eastern that we have drafted QB Byron Leftwhich, Marshall.

The reason for the embargo announcement is that the Bears GM is dealing with some real life issues and do not want to put him on the clock until he is ready.

Very noble of you, and I should know. Good decision, both on the pick and the wait. You filled a definite need for your team.

Thanks bro, I really appreciate it. It's been tough the past couple of days. I will think of the draft tonight, maybe try to forget about the real world for a while. Thanks...

1.4 Chiefs select DE Terrell Suggs, Arizona St.

While it is unlikely that the Chiefs would actually trade up, especially with no 3rd round pick this year (due to the Willie Roaf trade), I think this is for the best with this team. However, Suggs fills a huge hole and joins Eric Hicks, Ryan Simms, and whoever else steps up on the defensive line... (continued in the official draft commentary thread).

(EDIT: Misspelled the Chiefs  )

1.5 - The Dallas Cowboys select CB Terrance Newman of Kansas State

There is little reason to delay this pick. Although troubled by controversy and doubt over high profile positions such as Quarterback and Running Back, it is highly unlikely those concerns will be addressed by this fifth pick. With the absence of a sure thing at either of those positions, Dallas must look seriously at their other and numerous needs.

I see the most important and desperate needs at corner, offensive line, and a dominant pass rusher. I was easily able to remove offensive line from this equation despite the fact that it is arguably the Cowboys' biggest concern. I don't feel there is a definite NFL impact player on the offensive line worthy of the fifth pick. Therefore, I was seriously contemplating and weighing DE vs. CB.

This decision was made for me, however, when Kansas City traded up in the draft to select DE Terrell Suggs. That left me with one easy answer for the fifth pick. Terrance Newman will fill a vital role on an already fairly potent defense as a true shut-down corner and immediate contributor.
