Because goddamnit, I remember his strong voice all my life.. and what I heard in that last minute, was sad..
They never should have brought him back.

He's like Brett Favre. You haters can't make him quit.

I remember his strong voice as well, but I think (having only seen a few minutes so far) that his appearance borders on inspirational. The guy has fought back from what was apparently a very serious stroke. I hope he comes back even better next year.

His appearance is good.. but the voice... IF the voice recovers, I agree, bring him back. But if it's the same or god forbid, gets worse, that's it

I think it is sad to see Dick Clark slirring his words and struggling to complete his sentences.
I'm all for supporting those who come back from strokes, but this was not entertaining or anything positive for Dick Clarke. It has nothing to do with supporting Dick Clark, it was a joke.
There are other people who can host the show.

There are other people who can host the show.
But none who can come close to meaning what Dick Clark has meant to New Year's Eve. Nor any who can make it must-see-TV like he has.

Exactly. Also, I thought even his voice was inspirational last night. From my understanding, he had a stroke that completely or almost completely obliterated his ability to speak. He learned to speak all over again. If that isn't symbolic of a new beginning, I don't know what is. I hope he comes back next year with his speech even stronger, but even if it is the same, I hope he comes back.

I'm mostly in-between (handicapped somewhat by the fact that I didn't see/hear him myself - my wife said it was too sad & she couldn't stand it anymore, so she had already changed the channel & commandeered the remote by the time I joined the party).
Should he be there? I dunno?
Will he be there? For as long as he's willing to do it, regardless of whether he "should" or not.

They used to say the same thing about the tonight show and Johnny Carson. But the show still does as well as it did when Carson hosted. Anyway, I'm not here to bash Dick Clark, I liked him hosting the show in the past. It was just sad. I changed the channel.
Of course the musical entertainment wasn't helping. It was downright pathetic.

Hm... 76-year-old TV legend, struggling to overcome a stroke that many assumed would kill him, working hard to be a pro and do the show he made famous.
Or... Ryan Seacrest.
You know, I'll take Clark, thanks.

He's not ready yet, and to me it was unbearably sad.

But the show still does as well as it did when Carson hosted.
Difference being that it isn't the "event" that it was every night.
Carson "mattered", Leno doesn't.
And that's why I don't see Clark leaving the show until he (and only he) decides its time.

If it's not Dick Clark it will be Regis. And that's 100 times worse.

That's good to know. Which network was it? I have to make sure not to watch that network next year!

New Years Eve is supposed to be a celebration, and what I saw last night made me sad. Depressed, even. He should have had a cameo early on and that's it. People always throw out the Willie Mays playing CF for the Mets scenario when describing people performing beyond their prime. Well, last night was the equivalent of watching Willie Mays patrolling CF with no legs. I feel bad for the guy and admire what he has overcome, but TV shows are for the audience, not the people who put on the show. His appearance turned a celebration of the hopes and dreams for the new year into a depressing reminder of the realities of life. That was beyond inappropriate.

I'd take a mute Dick Clark over a talking Ryan Seacrest any day of the week and twice on New Year's Eve.

I didn't watch it, but it made my wife cry. So now I'm curious, are there any sites with a clip of Dick Clark's appearance?

I thought it was inspiring.
