View Full Version : Is my monitor or video card dying?

My monitor is starting to tweak out. It started a couple months ago. Every few seconds (usually after startup), but not every time, it makes these little weird pinging noises and the screen jiggles for a half second. The noises sound like taking a fork and slightly tapping it against glass. This happens for a few minutes, then the screen goes completely berserk for a second, similar to Degaussing, but louder and crazier. Then the monitor works fine. I have not had any problems with graphically intense games (CoD2, Doom3, SeriousSam2, etc).

I have not added any hardware. I did, however, change the refresh rate on my monitor from 75 to 85 (the manual for the monitor says the maximum rate is 90). The problem started a few weeks after that, but I changed it back to 75 a long time ago and the problem continues.

I purchased the monitor about 3 1/2 years ago (Dell 19" P992), the video card came with my computer 6 months ago (NVidea GForce 6800, drivers 8.1.9.5).

Has anyone else had this problem before? I have another computer I can hook the monitor up to to test, but it requires alot of bitch work and I wanted to save some time.

Oh, I should note the monitor had been on a 2port switch for a year or so. At first I thought the problem was with the switch, but I since plugged it directly to the computer.

Sounds like a monitor starting to go. It could last a while, though.

how can you find out what type of video card and driver you have? My computer wont play emprie earth or age of empires three anymore. It just brings up a blank screen and then goes back to my desktop. Any ideas?

If you go into your system properties and the device manager, you can see what type of display adapter you have and the type of driver you have (you can get there from the desktop too, just right-click, hit properties, then settings, then advanced) This should tell you what you are looking for.

And the main topic of this thread, yeah, that is surely the monitor (as everyone else has said :))

When my monitor died, it would do things like you described. However, it would go for a couple of weeks with nothing and then act up again. Eventually, the monitor just wouldn't turn on or would go black in a few seconds.
