I think Bill Cowher is still the Steelers head coach.

Don't frighten me ...

Norv's name was thrown in the mix of possible Chiefs replacements by a couple of media types, but I don't think the team actually has any interest in him.

That's why I asked. I imagine many a football fan fears the words "and *insert favorite team* has hired Norv Turner as their new head coach..."

I really think that Norv could succeed in KC and really think that is where he should land. ;) Seriously though all the media types keep harping about how Norv shouldn't have been fired and how somehow he is blameless in his 9-23 record. I remember the same groups trying to feed the Raiders fans bull by saying that he was a good "fit" when the Raiders hired him. I was hopeful, but couldn't get past his lack of success in Washington. He is a classic decent coordinator, terrible head coach. Pushover head coaches will always lose especially in todays selfish sports world. It is ok to be nice, but you have to be in charge.

What candidates are out there to fill all these vacancies? I cannot recall a year with so many openings and zero compelling candidates.

According to the AP:

Potential successors to Turner include Baltimore offensive coordinator Jim Fassel, Ravens quarterbacks coach Rick Neuheisel, former Raiders coach and current NFL vice president Art Shell, and Fresno State coach Pat Hill, who has NFL experience.

Davis has repeatedly said he regretted firing Shell after a 9-7 campaign in 1994.

And according to the SF Chron:

With so many openings, the Raiders are expected to be more active in their latest coaching search than they were in recent years.

One of the first calls they're expected to make is to Santa Clara, seeking permission to interview 49ers defensive assistant Mike Singletary. They also are expected to bring in Fresno State head coach Pat Hill, a former NFL assistant coach who has taken the Bulldogs to seven consecutive bowl appearances in nine seasons, and Browns offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon, who interviewed with the Raiders in 2004 and already is drawing interest from the Lions and the Packers.

Dolphins offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, who also is expected to interview for the openings in Houston and Minnesota, also might receive a call from Davis.

Herm Edwards to KC, Kirk Ferentz to Minnesota, fassell to Oakland, Kubiak to Houston and Tim lewis walks across the parking lot.

Does it really matter who Oakland gets? They'll be fired after 2 years anyways.

Herm will stay in NY according to the NFL network.

Not unless they're planning on trying to rebuild by "winning" top 5 draft picks.

I'm not sure if I'd hire Norv as a head coach. He had to coach under Snyder and Davis, so he may be like a little kid who was beat up too much at school. Then again, he could flourish under the right owner. *shrug*

I would've liked to see him go another season and see how the offense and defense could do when they're playing in his system for three years instead of two.

Dola,

Not to split hairs, but he wasn't fired. The Raiders did not exercise their option for his third year. :)

A few weeks ago, one ESPN's reputed Insiders was writing or saying that some coaches who normally would be fired would not due to the lack of viable candidates this year. Apparently that did not happen (although it appears to have saved Billick's job).

I would like to see the Jets (who are apparently a certainty to lose Herm to KC) give Donnie Henderson a chance. Knowing them though, they will hire one of the loser retreads, like Jim Haslett, or do something even stupider, like hire Greg Robinson.

I wouldn't mind Fassell returning to NY, personally.

Norval was originally hired by Jack Kent Cooke and did a fine job underachieving for a few seasons before Cooke died/John Kent Cooke ran team/team was auctioned off.

Don't fool yourself. Turner is a head coach because he was fortunate enough to be present when Jimmy Johnson put together the Triplets and one of the best offensive lines in league history. He has been nothing more than marginal anywhere else he has gone.

Norv Turner and Mike Martz are both members of the same club - "Guys who are awesome OCs and who should never be allowed to be a Head Coach again".

there ain't nothing wrong with saying you make a better OC or DC than a Head Coach. it's not for everyone.

yeah, not like he was responsible for being the reason why Ricky Williams became a force in the league in Miami.

Ricky Williams is a force for any OC. The reason Ricky left the Dolphins was because he didn't like the way Norv was using him and how much. Don't give Norv any credit for making Ricky a good back, Ricky made Norv look good enough to get another Head Coaching job and he stunk just like with the Fins. Easy to look good in Miami when we have no running attack then get a top 5 back in Ricky with Norv to use him.

Al Davis is not the worst owner to be a coach under. Madden; Gruden; Flores; Shell; all did fine for themselves under his ownership. Al can be infuriating and intrusive, but I think it is just the popular thing to do to bash him. As far as ownership goes I would rather be bugged by someone with a football knowledge base than a little squirrel in a business suit who has bought himself a new toy.

Norv had two years of talented teams. He was just very uninspiring. Gruden had Donald Hollas at qb and won eight games on pure fire.
