View Full Version : So, who do you want your team to draft?

The non-playoff teams look to the off-season to upgrade their teams, through free agency and the draft. Fourtunatly for me my Bears made the playoffs, with a first round bye . I could care less about the off-season, but I know fans of other teams, *cough*Packers*cough*, are looking to have a good off-season to make a run for the title next season.
On another note I feel bad for the Saints, because what half-way decent free-agent or first round pick would want to go to a team as unstable as the Saints. I have a hard time imagining Reggie Bush or Matt Leinart actually signing with the Saints.
Packers either have to resign Ahman Green or find a replacement. I seriously doubt Samkon Gado or Najeh Davenport can carry the load an entire season.
Minnesota looks like they will implode their team. They have a lot of free agents they are going to have to resign or replace.
San Francisco needs anything they can get.
San Diego has an interesting situation with Rivers, what will they do with him. How will they tweak their roster for next season, a better offensive line would help.
Also what will Miami do with their two running backs Williams and Brown. The Dolphins ended the season strong can they continue the momentum into next season?
I'm not that interested in the off-season yet, but I will be after the Bears win the Superbowl. :p

Yes, yes, I know. Our O-line is awful. I agree; however, I think a lot of the best OL guys in the league weren't drafted in the 1st round. I want us to draft someone with a lot of skill and toughness, preferably QB, DE, or DB. Trade up for Leinert or Hawk, or wait for the best player that drops to you.

I think a free safety that excels in pass coverage is the most pressing need for the 'boys. That and a kicker that doesn't suck. The Raiders look bleak too, but they just fired Norv and Kerry Collins probably isn't too far behind. They're not in as bad as shape as the salary suggests. Releasing Collins, Derrick Gibson, Bobby Hamilton, and Ron Stone will save them a lot of money.

I'd like to see the Jets get Vince Young or Leinart at #4. Chad Pennington will never play for them again, but because they cannot afford the cap hit to release him now, they will actually pay him his roster bonus in march, IR him as soon as they can, all for the purpose of releasing him on June 1, 2007.
A few comments on other things posted here.
DeShaun Foster will not hit the open market. He'll either sign long term or be franchised. Stephen Davis will be gone from Carolina.
I think Green Bay will not bring Ahman Green back. He'd cost too much, and I am not sure he is better at this point than whoever among Davenport, Fisher and Gado would play the most. I think Davenport is an absolute stud, if he could stay healthy.
I don't think there is any way Reggie Wayne gets a big deal from the Colts. They will have to choose between him and Edge and they'll pick Edge.
As for TE's in the draft, at the beginning of the season, UCLA's Mercedes Lewis was projected as a top 10 pick. Has he dropped below those two other guys?

I'd like to see cincy pursue Grady Jackson and draft a TE. I think if Palmer had a TE, there would be no way to stop the offense.. I would like to see them release John Thornton, Kim Herring, and one or two of their three TE's, along with Duane Clemons, if he is still signed for next season.
I also want them to lock up Willie Anderson, Levi Jones, and Eric Steinbach for the foreseeable future. Those three are all Pro Bowl Linemen..
I also would like to see depth at CB and Safety addressed, maybe With Demps at safety and a physical mid-round drafted CB.

Safety and DT are needs 1 and 1a for the Bengals. I'd love to sign Archuleta or Demps at safety and draft Jesse Mahelona at DT.
Of course, the defense needs playmakers, period. So if the best defensive player available when they draft is a DE, that would be OK-maybe Tamba Hali.
The answer at tight end is coming in the second round, Bengals fans, Anthony Fasano will graduate this spring and is probably coming out. While not as flashy as Pope or Lewis, he is a darned good receiver while giving up nothing as a blocker.

There are question marks about whether Dallas will keep Keyshawn, Ellis, Allen and Glover. Decisions on those guys will play heavily into what they decide to do in the draft.
But other than that, I think inside linebacker has to be the top need. Shanle and Fowler are solid players, but it appears Nguyen is going to retire. They need a monster in there.
I agree with the quoted post as well. Free safety, offensive line and kicker are all big needs. I think they'll sign a FA kicker, and I wouldn't expect them to draft a free safety in the 1st round. 1st round will probably be either an offensive lineman or linebacker with a wide receiver being the wild card.

The last guy they picked at #10 who was said to be taken too early is a pro bowl alternate LT and shut down Dwight Freeney for an entire game. A few draft "pundits" have written this year that he was clearly the right choice.
The defense still needs work, but the talent on offense is homegrown. Sure, the Bengals sucked in the warroom throughout most of the 90's, but that trend has been missing for a few years.

NFL network gurus were tossing the idea around last night and apparently Miami has expressed interest in bringing him in, I personally can't imagine it happening, but if it did, Miami becomes a major contender almost instantly with that move. Their only real weakness was Frerrotte at QB.

The Packers fan-part of my brain says there's no way Favre plays for another team, but the sane part of my brain says that kind of move would make a lot of sense to him. And for what it's worth, I'd rather see Favre keep playing for another team (especially one outside of the Packer's division/conference like Miami) than see him retire. I just love watching the guy play.

I should add that that kind of move would make a lot of sense to Favre if Ted Thompson continues to show no desire to improve the team's talent level in the short term.
From another Cowboys fan, my wishes (draft / free agent) from biggest to smallest:
1. OL help: mainly a tackle but center / guard would be good too. If this hadn't been a problem area, the team would've performed much much better.
2. Free safety: A glaring hole for the past couple years. Please find someone.
3. Kicker: Could have been the difference in a few games this year.
4. OLB / ILB: Could use another athletic playmaker and run stopper (they at least have some youth that could be decent, or at least depth).
5. DL (any): Canty and Spears are nice, but the depth is questionable after Ellis and maybe Glover are gone.

Scouts Inc.
The end of the NFL regular season means the selection order for the top half of the first round is finally set, save for the Raiders and 49ers, who will execute a coin flip to break a tie for picks Nos. 6 and 7.
While the official list of declared underclassmen will not be made available by the league until a few days after the Jan. 15 deadline, several players have made their intentions known, and others, including USC RB Reggie Bush, have been the subject of fairly well-informed speculation, meaning some things are beginning to take shape.
Much will change in the coming months, as players take part in postseason all-star games and individual workouts, as well as the scouting combine, but here is our initial first-round mock for the 2006 NFL draft:
1. Houston Texans (2-14): +Reggie Bush, RB, USC
2. New Orleans Saints (3-13): Matt Leinart, QB, USC
3. Tennessee Titans (4-12): D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT, Virginia
4. New York Jets (4-12): +Vince Young, QB, Texas
5. Green Bay Packers (4-12): A.J. Hawk, OLB, Ohio State
6. x-Oakland Raiders (4-12): Demeco Ryans, OLB, Alabama
7. x-San Francisco 49ers (4-12): Jimmy Williams, DC, Virginia Tech
8. Buffalo Bills (5-11): +Haloti Ngata, NT, Oregon
9. Detroit Lions (5-11): Jay Cutler, QB, Vanderbilt
10. Arizona Cardinals (5-11): +Mario Williams, DE, N.C. State
11. St. Louis Rams (6-10): +Vernon Davis, TE, Maryland
12. Cleveland Browns (6-10): Mathias Kiwanuka, DE, Boston College
13. Baltimore Ravens (6-10): DeAngelo Williams, RB, Memphis
14. Philadelphia Eagles (6-10): +Santonio Holmes, WR, Ohio State
15. Atlanta Falcons (8-8): Chad Greenway, OLB, Iowa
16. Miami Dolphins (9-7): Michael Huff, DB, Texas
17. Minnesota Vikings (9-7): +Laurence Maroney, RB, Minnesota
18. Dallas Cowboys (9-7): Derek Hagan, WR, Arizona State
19. San Diego Chargers (9-7): Marcus McNeill, OT, Auburn
20. Kansas City Chiefs (10-6): Orien Harris, DT, Miami-Fla.
21. *-New England Patriots (10-6): Paul Posluszny, OLB, Penn State
22. *-Denver Broncos (10-6): Tamba Hali, DE, Penn State
Pick acquired from Washington Redskins
23. *-Carolina Panthers (11-5): Claude Wroten, DT, LSU
24. *-Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11-5): +Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson
25. *-Chicago Bears (11-5): Marcedes Lewis, TE, UCLA

Young might be seeing green

The end of the NFL regular season means the selection order for the top half of the first round is finally set, save for the Raiders and 49ers, who will execute a coin flip to break a tie for picks Nos. 6 and 7.
While the official list of declared underclassmen will not be made available by the league until a few days after the Jan. 15 deadline, several players have made their intentions known, and others, including USC RB Reggie Bush, have been the subject of fairly well-informed speculation, meaning some things are beginning to take shape.
Much will change in the coming months, as players take part in postseason all-star games and individual workouts, as well as the scouting combine, but here is our initial first-round mock for the 2006 NFL draft:
1. Houston Texans (2-14): +Reggie Bush, RB, USC
2. New Orleans Saints (3-13): Matt Leinart, QB, USC
3. Tennessee Titans (4-12): D'Brickashaw Ferguson, OT, Virginia
4. New York Jets (4-12): +Vince Young, QB, Texas
5. Green Bay Packers (4-12): A.J. Hawk, OLB, Ohio State
6. x-Oakland Raiders (4-12): Demeco Ryans, OLB, Alabama
7. x-San Francisco 49ers (4-12): Jimmy Williams, DC, Virginia Tech
8. Buffalo Bills (5-11): +Haloti Ngata, NT, Oregon
9. Detroit Lions (5-11): Jay Cutler, QB, Vanderbilt
10. Arizona Cardinals (5-11): +Mario Williams, DE, N.C. State
11. St. Louis Rams (6-10): +Vernon Davis, TE, Maryland
12. Cleveland Browns (6-10): Mathias Kiwanuka, DE, Boston College
13. Baltimore Ravens (6-10): DeAngelo Williams, RB, Memphis
14. Philadelphia Eagles (6-10): +Santonio Holmes, WR, Ohio State
15. Atlanta Falcons (8-8): Chad Greenway, OLB, Iowa
16. Miami Dolphins (9-7): Michael Huff, DB, Texas
17. Minnesota Vikings (9-7): +Laurence Maroney, RB, Minnesota
18. Dallas Cowboys (9-7): Derek Hagan, WR, Arizona State
19. San Diego Chargers (9-7): Marcus McNeill, OT, Auburn
20. Kansas City Chiefs (10-6): Orien Harris, DT, Miami-Fla.
21. *-New England Patriots (10-6): Paul Posluszny, OLB, Penn State
22. *-Denver Broncos (10-6): Tamba Hali, DE, Penn State
Pick acquired from Washington Redskins
23. *-Carolina Panthers (11-5): Claude Wroten, DT, LSU
24. *-Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11-5): +Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson
25. *-Chicago Bears (11-5): Marcedes Lewis, TE, UCLA
26. *-Cincinnati Bengals (11-5): Brodrick Bunkley, DT, Florida State
27. *-New York Giants (11-5): Sinorice Moss, WR, Miami-Fla.
28. *-Pittsburgh Steelers (11-5): +LenDale White, RB, USC
29. *-Jacksonville Jaguars (12-4): Elvis Dumervil, DE, Louisville
30. *-Seattle Seahawks (13-3): Thomas Howard, OLB, UTEP
31. *-Denver Broncos (13-3): +Leonard Pope, TE, Georgia
32. *-Indianapolis Colts (14-2): Eric Winston, OT, Miami-Fla.
* - Still to be determined by playoffs
x - Still to be determined by coin flip
+ - Underclassman
I hope the Falcons don't take an OLB. They need a DE, OL or a Saftey. I don't see any way they'd pass on Huff to take Greenway.

the guy I want is probably a holdout and hates St. Louis and the Arch. :P
Jeeber is a NFL player? ;)

I don't know if he's coming out or staying put, but I'm a bit surprised not to see Joe Thomas on that list. I thought he was considered a pretty special prospect, and he's had a great year.

I think I'd rather have LenDale than Maroney in Minnesota. I love watching running backs run people over. Christian Okoye in Tecmo Super Bowl was the best ever.

Raiders-
Must stop using a big DE in Tyler Brayton at LB because the quick RBs are making him/coaches look stupid. I don't know how many times I have seen him flailing around out in space trying to cover a rb. As a coach I never ask a kid to do something he can't physically do, so why do they continue this with Brayton?
Draft: LB-hopefully Hawk but would settle for Greenway
S- Huff
RT-any true RT will do
FB- late round true blocking sledgehammer
FA: G- Hutchinson from Sea.
QB-and oh yeah the Favre kid from GB, I think he might look good
throwing to Moss; Porter; Gabriel; and Anderson.

Lions:
Dream Wish - A new GM.
Realistic Wish - Anything other than a WR or O-Lineman.
I want Schmidty as our new GM!! :)

If I was picking for the two teams I root for:
Texans: Not Reggie Bush (disclaimer: I think he is the second coming, but he's not going to help this team right now). Trade down to 3 or 4, get D'Brickashaw Ferguson, and an extra second round pick. Then go interior lineman and linebacker/d-line. No sexy picks -as many serviceable linemen as possible.
Chargers: WR might be the most pressing need but doesn't seem to be too much value out there. Would love to see Santonio Holmes drop a few places further than he is projected. Otherwise - this seems to be a pretty good team built for the future. Might be a "take the best player available" situation.

Well, for the record, I can't stand the Cowboys or the Stars... or U of Texas.

Current cap situation
http://www.theredzone.org/caproom.asp
Tennessee is screwed...
Actually, those cap numbers if current are meaningless. I know Tennessee's projected cap for next year is 102million but that is monoply money. McNair is promised a 50 Million bonus! Yes, that is 50 million. He will never see that and almost certainly will renegotiate for a much much lower cap friendly number. They Titans should be well below the Cap by feb or march.

Tight End, Cornerback, Free Safety, Possession WR, and Fullback.
Bears needs in order right there.

Cornerback really? I think Vasher and Tillman are a very capable group (as long as they aren't matched up with Steve Smith) And I love Harris and Brown as safeties.
The other positions I agree with. Find a stud WR.

I'm pretty sure if Millen would draft another wideout, someone could shoot him and no jury in the state of Michigan would convict the shooter.

I really want Mario Williams, but I just don't see how he drops down to #6 or #7 where the Niners will be.

I don't even think we need a *stud* receiver, I think we need an Engram/McAffrey (first two that came to mind) type guy who just Catches The Damn Ball.
I think moving Vasher or Tillman to nickel and picking up a stud CB would be better. We need a faster corner to handle Steve Smith Situations. Vasher and Tillman can handle a good chunk of receivers, but they simply can't deal with upper tier WR's.
I'm not sold on Harris at all at safety. I think we can pick up better. Of course, even if Harris would win a training camp battle, a 3rd safety is absolutely necessary. There's a *very* noticable falloff on the Bears D when Brown is out injured, and they badly need depth there.

No, he is drafting Cutler....and then converting him to a wide reciever. :)

That's the Falcons. They don't need a big time WR or a young WR. They need a guy who runs perfect routes and has sticky hands.

No way Hutchinson is available. They'll franchise him if need be.

GB: The Packers drafted two guards last year, but the interior OL is still a concern, especially if Flanagan departs. If he falls to #5, take Ferguson, move Tauscher to guard, and be happy. Otherwise, trade down 5-10 spots to pick up a 2nd rounder, then take the best OLB or DT available. I'm not sold on Hawk at #5, but he or a couple of other OLBs would be good in the high-singles to mid-teens.

ESPN is smart. Thomas is gonna be a serious player...
I'm hoping the Vikings take Howard. As far as that mock goes, as big a fan as I am of Maroney I don't want the Vikes to take him first round.

Minnesota looks like they will implode their team. They have a lot of free agents they are going to have to resign or replace.
I don't think they're looking to implode the team. They have a team that's coming off a 9-7 season with about $25 million in cap room. I'd expect them to concentrate on upgrading at RB, OL, and LB.

Any of you guys listen to Houston radio? If so, what's the buzz on their pick.
As a Houston sports fan who is yet to get into the Texans, I think I'll start rooting for them with either Bush or Young, but with Young it'd be a sure thing.
