OK, we've had wolves, vampires, mafioso, assassins, demons, spawn, and outlaws, but now the world of Werewolf and the world of Hollywood collide in my first attempt at running a game.
Some of you know a little (or a lot in a few cases) about the game, but in short, this will be a basically standard game of werewolf (nods to Coffee Warlord and his yak) taking place in the setting of a very popular fictional world. (and if it doesn't suck, I have a few more adaptations stirring around in my head)
There is really no limit to the number of players, as I can easily adjust the number of roles depending on the number of players. I plan on using the apparently popular 12/24 hour day and night cycles, with the night cycles being flexible within the constraints of my work schedule. When a day cycle ends in the evening, it will end at 9:30 eastern (middle of my lunch break at work so i can post results)
WE WILL NOT START UNTIL THE CURRENT GAME IS OVER, and if requested will leave a couple days of rest in between for recovery. The rules/storyline will be posted shortly.
1.Alan T, Wizard, Potions Master, Lynched Day 3
2.SnDvls, Death Eater, Occlumens, Lynched Day 2

i'll keep going as long as people keep joining in.
OK, here are the rules. If anyone has any questions, send me an Owl. I think i have the balance worked out again for this many people, so i plan on rolling for roles over the weekend, expect an Owl from me sometime then with your role.
I bring you.....Werewolf, the Harry Potter Edition (knowledge of the Harry Potter world is not required, but may be helpful)
Setting – You are the residents of small Wizarding village, much like Hogsmeade, and like the rest of the Wizarding world, you are currently living in fear of the return of He Who Must not be Named. The Ministry of Magic protection pamphlets have been distributed to all the homes in the village, and you seem to think that you are fortunate enough that to this point, The Dark Lord and his supporters have passed over your small community. However, this hope is soon shattered as strange things start to happen in town. Screams are heard during the night, some of the villagers disappear without a trace, and it is unknown if they left willingly or were taken by force. As a group you decide to send an owl to the Ministry of Magic, pleading for them to help you all save your small village. They respond by sending an aged old wizard who wanders into town one afternoon and takes up on a stool at the local pub. Although he does not appear to me much help at first glance, over the course of the next few days, he provides several of you with the knowledge or the means to fight back against the forces of You-Know-Who. After spending the day in the town square, where he most helpfully casts an Anti-Apparition charm over the whole of the village, he goes back to his familiar spot at the bar. As he drains tankard after tankard of mulled mead, he begins to hint at a greater depth of knowledge about some of the people in the village, inferring that there may actually be Death Eaters among you. Before he can say anymore, the mead catches up to him and he passes out on the bar without saying who amongst you has been known to travel in the company of You Know Who. This is where we join the story…..
Primary Roles:
Wizard – you are a just an everyday member of the Wizarding world, possibly a shopkeeper or tradesman, and have made the choice to fight for what is good, over what is easy.
Death Eater – by day, you appear to be the same as everyone else in the village, but come the cover of night, your mask and hooded cloak are donned, and you become a servant of the Dark Lord.
Secondary Roles (these may occur more than once or not at all, and some may have abilities known only to the wizard having that role):
Retired Auror – once a champion in the fight against evil, you had hoped to live out the remainder of your years in peace, but now find yourself pressed into service once again. Each night, you may protect one other wizard, but never the same one twice in a row and you may choose to protect yourself. You automatically possess Dark Detectors.
Legilimens – (Wizards only) you are an expert in the art of Legilimency. Each night, you may select one wizard to examine, and will find out if they are hiding any secrets within the recesses of their mind.
Occlumens – (Death Eaters only) you are an expert in the art of Occlumency. If you are viewed by a Legilimens, he will not be able to determine if you are hiding anything from him.
Dark Lord’s Spy – Each night, you may examine one of your fellow villagers to determine if they are the Legilimens. If the wizard you view is not the Legilimens, you will only be told your view was unsuccessful. If you do find the Legilimens, this information will be passed to the Death Eaters. You do not know who the Death Eaters, and they do not know you, and you can be killed at night by them. If you are viewed by the Legilimens, you will appear to be hiding something. For the purposes of counting for victory conditions, you count as a villager, but you win if the Death Eaters win. If the Wizards win, you lose, even if you are still alive.
Ministry of Magic Official – as a member of the ministry, you have the ability to change the outcome of the days lynch vote. If the person you change the vote to is in the service of the Dark Lord, you retain this power, however if you change the vote to an innocent, you will be relieved of office. This ability is used in secret by sending an owl to the DM at any point during the day cycle, or within 15 minutes after the voting deadline. However, if you make the wrong choice, your role is revealed.
There may be additional secret roles not listed here.
ALSO, THE ROLES LISTED ABOVE MAY HAVE ADDITIONAL ABILITES NOT DEFINED HERE. THIS IS WHERE SOME KNOWLEDGE OF THE WIZARDING WORLD CAN HELP YOU, AS THE ROLES ARE EXACTLY WHAT THEY WOULD BE IN THE HARRY POTTER BOOKS OR MOVIES.
Items:
Invisibility Cloak – A gift to you from Saldana, a rare and valuable cloak that while worn, renders the wearer invisible. You may chose to wear your cloak outside at night in an effort to follow anyone that may be about at night. This ability may only be used once.
Dark Detectors – At Saldana’s recommendation, you purchased several items that allow you to provide to yourself a certain level of protection against the dark forces. These items will provide you the warning you need if the Death Eaters come for you, and will allow you to escape without harm.
There may be other secret items not specified here.
Rules:
The game will consist of two phases, Day and Night. The game will begin with Night 0, and no actions will take place unless specifically indicated by Owl Post.
Cycles will rotate between 12 and 24 hour cycles, always ending at 9:30am or 9:30pm. Times are EST, or FOFC board time. If all night Owls have been received, the results will be posted early, however this will only extend the length of the Day Cycle, and will not move the Deadlines. This is intended to ensure everyone has ample time to read all the posts and make their votes with a minimum of players missing the deadlines. Because this thread is most likely going to be huge, I will put the next deadline in the title each time one passes, along with the current Day/Night number.
Each day, the remaining wizards must vote for another wizard to be lynched at nightfall. Any ties will be broken with the Wizard that received their last vote first being the one to be executed, unless some other method of breaking the tie occurs.
Each night, players with a specified night role send an Owl to the DM informing him how they would like to use their ability or possession, with the Death Eaters being able to choose a wizard to murder during the night.
When the Death Eaters decide upon their nightly murder, they must specify which one of them is going to perform the killing. They may send only one person on the action, or they may send more than one. Some murders may require more than one Death Eater to succeed.
Victory Conditions:
Very simple, the Death Eaters win by achieving a 1:1 ratio with the Wizards
The Wizards win by finding and killing all the Death Eaters. You do not have to kill the Dark Lord’s Spy in order to win.

I would request this saldana, static times for lynch votes that stay the same everyday...be it 8 oclock every night or something...thats the one problem i have with coffees right now, and dubb voiced the same concern. process night if you get them early, but i ask you set a lynch time thats static...if you miss it, you miss it. Should be a problem getting votes out of this large number.
Barkeep49

I agree. I still like the 24/12 system for deadlines, but if night is processed early, which is nice for the players, then simply extend the next day time.

Out of nothing more than my own personal interests, I'd like to request 9pm or later.
I won't get out of work before 6pm some nights, and the commute home can take up to an hour. A little breathing time to catch up would be greatly appreciated!

01-05-2006, 09:05 PM
back in post 1, i did say that the day cycles that end during the evening will always be at 9:30. i take my lunch break from 9 to 10 each night, so i will use the first half hour to count, and the second to post, so no worries that there will be variable day cycle deadlines....consequently, if i run the night cycle short, some of the day cycles may be really long. as for day cycles that end in the morning....i work til 1 am, there is no way i am getting up before 9 to process anything, so that deadline is pretty much carved in stone as well.
Grammaticus
01-05-2006, 09:09 PM
I liked the static times (used in the first thread that I read through). Something like each day cycle ends at 9pm eastern time and the night cycle ends at Midnight eastern. When they start switching around it gets confusing. I expect this game to have a lot of posts and I dont want to have to read back to catch a posted cycle time. If the night cycle ends early, great, post the results and the next day cycle is just that much longer.

basically, it means that the roles may have additional abilites that would be consistent with the HP world, and it is really there more as a disclaimer than anything so when things happen :) i will just point to it and say that i warned you....dont worry though, if you get a role like this, the explanation of how to use it will be extremely detailed, and i will answer any specific questions by Owl Post.

just to clear up the who is going to be hermione question...there are no specific HP roles in the game...no one will be harry or any other JK Rowling character....the roles remain generic for the purposes of making them easier to portray...it would be impossible to be Harry and live through the 2nd night, because to have that role, it would be obvious (scar on head), and the death eaters would go straigt after you.
however, if anyone was going to be hermione, it would be lathum.

I prefer day cycles to end at night (real-time) whenever possible, so I vote for the latter.

There are some aspects that are different -- it's much harder to pore over voting records when you're pressed for time and you don't have a written record -- but there are also some common elements, e.g. when you're trying to hint at being the seer or the witness, that sort of thing.

The way i see, last game when everyone had a role, role reveals really did help to win us that game(obviously ardent and hoops were meant to hold out longer)..but building a list of trust is what won us that game, nothing more or less.
As for this game, id advise against it for now.

I'm even worse off than dubb, I would guess. I vaguely remember one Potter movie. I'd hate to guess (but I'll have to), but wasn't there another one or two? I've never read the books. Maybe I will when I have children. I've always envisioned myself as someone that will read to their kids.

Ok here's a Harry Potter primer. I can answer any questions you might have as well. I have tried to put the terms saldana has used in bold.
The world of Harry Potter exists in a world parallel to our own. The wizarding community does its best to make sure that those of us who are not wizards, otherwise known as Muggles, do not become alarmed or even aware of their presence. Several years ago the wizarding world was rocked by a wizard named Lord Voldemort. Lord Voldemort, and his followers, called Death Eaters, waged a reign of terror upon the wizarding world. They were unafraid to use the wizarding world's most powerful spell which allows a wizard to kill somebody and were able to avoid detection through their use of Occulemency, a branch of wizarding which protects the mind. Even Aurors, specially trained wizards who act as a sort of police force for the wizarding world, were at risk. The Ministry of Magic, the governing body of the Wizarding world, was at a loss.
All of this came to a sudden end. Voldemort and his followers went to the house of James and Lily Potter, who also had a baby boy named Harry. After Voldemort killed James, Lily cast a spell, which cost her her own life, but protected Harry. When Voldemort attempted to kill Harry the spell rebounded and Voldemort was killed.
Following Voldemort's disappearences, many of the Death Eaters were arressted. Many were subjected to interregation through the use of Legilimens which allows someone to enter the memories of another person.
However, recently through a complex method, not important here, Voldemort has regained corpreal form and his death eaters have started to wreak havoc once more upon the wizarding world. It is at this point that our game seems to start.
While I mentioned before that the wizarding world exists parallel to our own there is also a wizarding village, that has no Muggles, called Hogsmeade. Our setting is a village like this, though not Hogsmeade itself.

Night 0 (i will always try to remember to post in red to make things easy for everyone)
After dinner, the entire town gathers in the village pub, The Wasted Wizard Inn, for another evening of listening to Saldana’s advice of how to protect yourselves against the forces of evil. As is his usual habit, goblet after goblet of mulled mead is consumed by your Ministry Advisor, and shortly after he finishes explaining that thanks to the charm he cast over the town this afternoon, no one can apparate or disapparate within the village borders any longer, he changes the subject.
“Now, one thing you all need to understand is that you all are already in danger. I have spent the last few nights out in town, watching, and I’ve seen men about. I have seen them meeting with others in the shadows, hooded and whispering. Those that follow He Who Must Not Be Named are already among you, and you need to move quickly to protect yourselves.”
You all look around, looks of suspicion and surprise on your faces at this revelation, not quite sure what to make of it. Your disbelief does have some merit, as Saldana is typically too drunk to walk in a straight line by the end of the night, much less follow someone and employ stealth while doing so. Just as you are about to question him about who it was he saw, a dull thud, followed by a loud clatter, comes from the direction of your Counselor, and you turn back to see Saldana slumped forward against his table, the goblet of mead in that was in front of him knocked to the floor.
“Well, it was about time for that to happen”, mutters the barkeeper, as he picks up the goblet and begins mopping up the spilled mead. “I’ve had to levitate his drunken ass up to his room every night since he got here.”
“We don’t have time for this prat to be passed out,” exclaims one of you angrily, “someone wake him up!” The wizard closest to him tires to shake Saldana awake, and in doing so knocks him out of his chair to the floor. It is then you notice that Saldana’s robes are rent open across his chest, and crimson streaks are running down his front, and blood is now seeping onto the floor. A large eviscerating slash has been cut diagonally into Saldana from his shoulder to his waist, and a further check reveals that he is not passed out as usual, but he is in fact, dead.
Night 0 has begun; night actions are due by 9:30 am EDT on Monday

Looking at the numbers again, I agree with you. I was rounding down (somehow) to 25. In previous games with 15 we've had 3 wolves, so double that number...

It's either that, or a smaller number who can kill more than one a night.
Of course, regardless of the number of wolves/demons/death eathers/feral squid, I imagine we will have a LOT of multikill nights with this many people playing.

Well, I got my vote for Neon out of the way, but I won't be a party to a day 1 bandwagon. I'm switching my vote to Mr. W for reasons above. I know past games aren't supposed to influence current ones, but I remember his words well after I pulled one out of a hat and won it for the villagers. I see no other reason for him to throw a vote my way this early.

Mr. W, I remember you saying in the past that my play scares you and if you were bad you would try and get rid of me early....are you trying to tell me something? Please, I wouldn't be so transparent as to try to get rid of you by voting. If I were a Death Eater, I'd try to get lost in the crowd during the day (and admittedly, I might have voted for you then for the same reason I actually did vote for you as a normal wizard) and then kill you at night. :)
My reason for voting for you was, I needed to come up with someone, I wanted it to be somebody without a vote already, and you were in the "reading this thread" list.

That said it seems Superman is getting the non-check in votes and so I will join that crowd.

With the way things are going, it forces me to lay my hand down on the table. I don't know if ardent is innocent or not, but I'd rather have the one guy I'm pretty sure is guilty go down. But to do that, I have to risk uncovering myself.
I am a Legimilens.
I believe that Qwikshot is a Death Eater. Last night, I delved into the depths of his mind... and sensed deception and satisfaction upon the death of saldana. I saw images of a graveyard... and people who are writhing in pain. I also sensed feelings of satisfaction... feelings of power and dominance over the people being tortured. I would go as far to say that Qwikshot
I'm not sure if this means he is a Death Eater, but I would suppose that he is one... or at least a bad guy in my book.
Now, my only hope is to not get voted out, and be protected by the Retired Auror tonight to at least get another viewing.

erratum: I would go as far to say that Qwikshot uses the Cruciatus Curse in some way, shape or form.
