Big 12

Kansas over Houston
Clemson over Colorado
Nebraska over Michigan
Missouri over South Carolina
TCU over Iowa State
Alabama over Texas Tech
Oklahoma over Oregon

4-3 pending the Texas game tonight.

Big 10

Wisconsin over Auburn
Ohio State over Notre Dame
Penn State over Florida State
Florida over Iowa
Virginia over Minnesota
Nebraska over Michigan
UCLA over Northwestern

3-4 Bowl Games Record

SEC

Missorui over South Carolina
Florida over Iowa
LSU over Miami
Alabama over Texas Tech
Wisconsin over Auburn
West Virginia over Georgia

3-3 Bowl Games Record

ACC

Clemson over Colorado
Boston College over Boise State
Utah over GT
Virginia over Minnesota
LSU over Miami
NC St over South Florida
VT over Louisvile

5-2 Bowl Games Record

PAC 10

UCLA over Northwestern
ASU over Rutgers
Oklahoma over Oregon
California over BYU

3-1 Pending tonight's game.

So who gets labeled as the best conference this year? Do we give it to the Pac 10 if USC wins tonight? I say no just because they had a cupcake Bowl Season with Rutgers, BYU, and some would say Northwestern but I'll give them that one.

Big 12 if Texas wins tonight? Probably not as they were pretty bad as a whole this year. A nice win for Oklahoma over Oregon, but that's about it at the moment.

ACC? They've got a good resume, going 5-2 in bowl games.

Big 10? They started 0-4 in conference games but won the three biggest matchups in the end, 3-4.

SEC? LSU came out with a big win, but Auburn ruined it a little with a Bowl Game loss.

So who's the best conference of the 2005 season?

It really is tough to say. The ACC got embarassed with their highest rated team getting blown away by LSU. The SEC champs lost to the Big East champs. The Big 12 had a down year, but played better in the bowls with Oklahoma and Nebraska getting wins. The Pac 10 squeaked by in 3 of their bowl games and took a big hit with their second place team losing to an unranked team. I can't decide.

Yup, a pretty balanced year.

Too bad there weren't toilet bowls to see how well the bottom of the conferences would do.

The ACC is 5-3 actually... You forgot to include Florida State.

I thought it was SEC earlier. I think they were a bit overrated, but still probably the best of the bunch. Big East is definitely most UNDERrated.

I voted for the Big 10. Sure they started 0-4, but they won the BIG games and their 3 best teams won (and Ohio State & Wisconsin rolled). There is also a legitimate complaint by Iowa.

I think that bowl games are the absolute worst way to judge conference strength. For one thing, teams play quite differently in the bowls than they did in the regular seasons. That three week stretch before the games transforms many teams because it allows 1) guys that have been injured all year to heal, 2) freshmen who haven't played all year to improve (and some to point of starts), 3) Regular starters to get rusty. If bowls were played within 1 to 2 weeks of the regular season, you wouldn't see so many erratic games with many teams playing totally different football than they did before.

Then there is the match-up factor. Hardly ever are the conferences matched-up straight up. #1 versus #1 usually happens, but most bowls are like #3 versus #5, and even then the bowls will flip them around by who "travels best." So, seeing a #6 in a conference going up against a #3 in an another conference is not uncommon.

The bowls are just a bad metric for determining anything. The only way I can see to make a determination is just looking at conferences from top to bottom and giving your best guess.

Big East is definitely most UNDERrated.I'm not sure how you can make that claim based on WVU beating Georgia....because other than that game, the Big East did nothing this season.

My vote goes to the SEC. I thought LSU and Auburn were the best two teams in there this year, but since UGA won the conference, you'd have to include them among the SEC elite. After that, Florida & Alabama are solid enough to boost the conference over all of the others.

What conference can make a case for being more underrated than the Big East? I doubt they have a victory over the SEC champions on their resume.

The Big East was probably better than the Big 12 this year.I just don't see it. As a conference, the Big East has one quality OOC win all season. One. Based off of that, you're putting them ahead of the Big 12? Ridiculous.

Yep, close year. The Big 12 redeemed themselves a little with Missouri, OK and NU, but anyone who has watched Big 12 games this year knows it's not close to the best conference.

I think the Pac-10 is a bit overrated, and I agree that their bowl wins haven't been as impressive as some other conferences.

I would have said SEC was the best this year, top to bottom. They didn't do as much in the bowls as I thought they'd do, but I still think overall they're the best.

Big 10 wins this one over the SEC based on their heavyweights' performances in the bowls (even though the Penn State-Florida State game was pretty ugly, in my opinion). Penn State and Ohio State should both finish the season ranked in the top 5.

As much as I love and root for the Big East, other than West Virginia's season and Sugar Bowl win, things could not have gone much worse. Coming off a BCS bid, Pitt crapped their pants in a high profile game vs Notre Dame to open the season and then lost to Ohio (not State) University on national TV. Louisville began to earn some respect, climbing the rankings and then got hammered on national TV by South Florida. UConn had a lot of unfortunate injuries and took a step back as a program. Syracuse hit rock bottom with a 1-11 record. The close bowl losses were still losses and Louisville, in particular, could have really jumped up the polls had they held on against VT, since so many teams ahead of them lost. I think only WVU, Rutgers, and South Florida met or exceeded expectations in the Big East.

I think and hope the good news for the BE is that the Sugar Bowl performance and top 6-7 final ranking that WVU should earn may have weathered the storm for the league and bought a little more time to gain some respect. There should be no coaching changes in the conference this season, which will be nice since five of the eight BE coaches this season were debuting in the league. The league will have a nice crop of QBs returning with experience under their belt (Brohm at UL, White at WVU, and Palko at Pitt) and some exciting skill players (Slaton at WVU, Leonard/Rice at Rutgers, Michael Bush at UL), so the league will have some higher profile players to market. Last season, the only returning player with any type of "name" was Palko. There will be a number of chances for the BE to compete with other BCS conferences and hopefully they can win a fair share of those games in '06.

Texas 28-25 over Ohio State in Columbus comes to mind....

Edit to add: Oklahoma over Oregon in the Holiday Bowl (even if Oregon was overrated a bit at #6).

Nebraska over Michigan in the Alamo Bowl. (Not much, but still, it's a win over another BCS member)

The Big East was probably better than the Big 12 this year.

I'm a big Big East supporter too, but I wouldn't go that far yet. The Big East made some big strides in showing that they are a legitimate conference, but it will still take a few years for them to stabilize into a respected top-bottom football conference. But, I think that the Big East will be okay if schools like WVU, Pitt, and Louisville pick up the slack for a few years by not embarrasing the BE during the bowl season; while the other schools establish/re-establish themselves.

as a Pac-10 fan we had a down year. after U$C, UCLA & Oregon there really wasn't much. This isn't taking away from U$C going undeafeated in conference thogh as they had to play both of those teams. I would have to say overall THIS YEAR the Big 11 was the best overall football conference.

But your next statement was that the Big 12 OOC scheduling was a joke, which, to me, meant that scheduling Pitt was a joke.

Look at all of the conferences, and tell me none of the other conferences schedule pasties. I'll admit that Texas Tech is probably the worst offender, but as a whole I don't see the Big 12's OOC schedule as all that different from the other BCS conferences.

The Big 12 ooc scheduling is really a joke.

Not any worse than any other conference (I say without any real evidence to back that up.)

Texas scheduled arguable the toughest OOC game of the year with Ohio State while Oklahoma had the toughest schedule in the nation with Tulsa, TCU and UCLA OOC. A&M played Clemson, and Colorado played Miami.

Granted, plenty of Big 12 teams played major cupcakes (Texas Tech comes to mind), but I think overall, the Big 12 was pretty solid with their OOC scheduling.

Well, I don't have any metrics, but I was just looking over the schedules for the Big East, Big 10, and Big 12, and it seemed like the Big 12 was way, way worse than the other 2.

Doing a little bit of research, and it appears that the SEC wins the softest out of conference scheduling race. This past season, the 12 SEC teams scheduled 13 games against Div. 1AA or Sun Belt conference opponents.

Wait, you counted WVU's bowl game but not Oklahoma's or Nebraska's?

And you seriously counted a win over Navy? In that case, Colorado beat Colorado State and Missouri beat South Carolina. Hell, Kansas beat Houston if we're being that charitable.

From glancing at the Big 12 schedules, a couple of schools (Texas Tech, OK State, Kansas) certainly played poor OOC opponents. But with the ones I mentioned, and also Iowa State playing Iowa and Nebraska playing Pitt, I'd say the OOC scheduling overall for the conference was pretty solid.

I don't know what st.cronin is smoking, but as a whole, the Big East conference is squarely in the Mountain West, CUSA & WAC camp. Not even close to the other BCS conferences.

I guess we're not going to get the Virginia Tech stomp of approval on this, but: The Big East is the 6th best conference right now and on the rise. WVU and Louisville are better than any non-BCS teams and Pitt and Syracuse won't be down for long. The win over Georgia was huge.

I think this quote is applicable:

"I don't like facts. Facts change - my opinion doesn't. My opinion stays the same
no matter what the facts are."

Actually my opinion has changed. At the beginning of the year, I said the Big East was no better than the Mountain West. Then the Mountain West went out and sucked.

Agreed. As long as the BCS keeps awarding autobids to the top 6 conferences, and there are no other conferences that are clearly better than the Big East, the BE will probably keep the autobid so long as the yearly conference champs don't consistently embarass themselves.

Very tough call this year. I'd have a hard time picking between the SEC and Big 10, and I actually don't think the Big 12 is too far behind.
