(copied over from General, where I posted it too quickly in attempt to beat the filters :D)

Welcome to the FOFC Roller Derby League (using plaay.com's Roller Rumble, a now out of print game.)

This will be a six team league, using players from the various sets that plaay.com put out.

If you want to join, post your name, and what position you want.. Blocker (the guys in the pack who usually get to dish out the punishment , Pivot (the team captain type role, and Jammer (the flashy scorer type).

Also, pick two skills you want your skater to have:

FAST
AGILE
POWERFUL
SMART
MEAN
BIG

I will attempt to find a skater that matches your stats. The teams will be seperated into an A Squad and a B squad, with each team alternating periods (The A Squad would skate the first period, the B Squad would skate the 2nd period and back and forth for the six periods a game takes)

Four of the Six Team Names have been announced.

The Elitists
The Dolaposters
The Wrecking Trouts
The Wigfectas

The last two names? The first players to sign up will choose the name:

So, here's my entry: (and a sample for you to base yours off of)

In an exhibition game today, the FOFC All Stars defeated the Southern Redshirts 25-22.

The FOFC All Stars are a team made up of players across four of the FRDL's Six League Teams, and the 11 players competed against of Southern Derby skaters (called the Redshirts named after the color uniform they were wearing.)

This one started slow in the first period.. the FOFC All Stars had the best of it, scoring on three of the four jams in the period (a jam is when one of the jammers breaks away from the pack.. they have 60 seconds to come around and lap as many players as they can, scoring one point per player passed, and more then 1 jammer can score points on a jam), but the Red Shirts Walker made the most of his lone jam as lead jammer, passing all five All Stars on the track, and after one period, the Red Shirts led 5-4.

Danny Von Detox got hit with a 2nd quarter penalty, but it hardly slowed them down, with Blade and Coffee Warlord each scoring 4 point jams in the 2nd quarter, and at the halftime of this abbreviated exhibition, the All Stars led 12-8.

The third quarter only had three jams, as tight pack work prevented the jammers from easily breaking free, but Morton seemingly had a great jam going, passing 3 All Star defenders but a thunderous check by Tyrone "the Bone" Malone put him over the safety rail, and Flash took advantage of the confusion, scoring a full 5 point jam as the energized All Star squad blocked like demons.

Embarrased, the Red Shirt side really laid into the All-Stars, and Walker escaped, scoring 4 points, but made an error, not calling off the jam in time to prevent Flash from scoring a point of his own. When King Johnny added a three point jam at the end of the period, the FOFC All Stars had a 21-14 lead.

In the fourth quarter, FOFC put it away early in the period, a 4 point jam by Coffee Warlord put them up 11, when the game started to get ugly. Malone was penalized for a leg whip on Thornberry of the Red Shirts, and that touched off a brawl. Normally, Malone would have been ejected for his actions in touching off the fight, but since this was an exhibition, the referees convinced FOFC All Star Coach SirFozzie to substitute Malone instead.

The Red Shirts managed to make it look close with a 4 pointer from Morton shortly after Malone's penalty expired, and they added a 3 point jam from Walker in the final moments, but it wasn't enough, and the FOFC All Stars won the initial FRDL game, 25-22. All FOFC players managed at least a quarter and a half of play.

I'll add you in tommorrow night, Izulde, and take all the folks who sign up before then, and then draft out the remaining players on a team (Each team will have 10 players, 5 starters, 5 reserves)..

each game will be six periods.. I've decided not to go with the traditional system of men skating one period, and women skating the next.. just go with one 10 man roster.

If you get three penalties in a game, you're ejected from the game. Certain rolls on the Highlight reel table could also lead to ejections. Any ejections will lead to a one game suspension.

Our First FRDL team preview:

The Wrecking Trouts:

They probably lead the league in most nicknames, they have Coffee Warlord, Flash, King Johnny, Bruiser, Howdy, Just Plain. They also have a lot of talent. They also have the meanest player in the FRDL, Doyle Shick (who's been tagged with lots of nicknames, but none of them are fit to say on air!) Probably a top team to beat, however, there's not super players on the bench, so the starters will have to stay out of injury trouble as well as trouble with the league office.

Roster (B=Blocker, P=Pivot, J=Jammer), with skills listed.. If they have a * next to the skill name, theat means they have a superior version of that skill, they defeat normal skill holders in a position test.

(B) Nick "Bruiser" Norton (Fast, Powerful, Smart, TV Grade=C)
(P/B) Doyle Shick (Mean*, Powerful*, Cheat*, TV Grade=A)
(J/B) Danny Von Detox (Powerful, Mean, Big, TV Grade=D)
(J/P) King Johnny (Star, Smart, Agile*, Fast*, TV Grade=A)
(B) Harold "Howdy" Harrleson (Mean*, Fast, TV Grade=C)
(B) "Just Plain" Wayne Swayne (Big, Powerful, TV=C)
(B) Norm "Wheel" Wheeler (Smart*, Fast, TV=C)
(B) George Sweet (Smart*, TV=D)
(J) Coffee Warlord (Agile*, Smart*, Fast* TV Grade=A
(B) Hunter (Powerful, Mean, TV=D)

The Elitists:

There's no truth to the rumor that you need to be able to finish a seven course meal in one sitting to join the elitists, but there is no doubt that this team has more then it's share of big guys.. but the TV seems to love em, they prove that you don't have to be a beanpole to skate on the banked track.

(J/B) Blade (Agile*, Fast*, Big, TV=B)
(P) KA Ton (Powerful, Big, Agile, TV=C)
(J) Sherm "Boo Boo" Buber (Cheat*, TV=D)
(B/P), Stan Sinclair (Agile, Powerful, TV=C)
(J) Ty Roy "The Golden Boy" (Star*, Big, Smart, TV=A)
(B) Clarence Mayes (Star, Agile, Big, TV=C)

(B) "Mean" Eugene Dixon (Big*, Powerful*, Mean, Star, TV=A)

The Dolaposters:

Unlike their namesake, they don't repeat themselves. They're pretty well rounded, and will give any team trouble, though. If it turns into a fight, then these guys will have an advantage, they may be the most powerful team in the FRDL. They will need their jammers to stay healthy, however, or they will be in big trouble when it comes to scoring

(P) Izulde (Star, Powerful, Smart, Big, TV=B)
(J/B) Tucker (Fast, Smart, Cheat, TV=B)
(J) Flash (Powerful, Fast*, Star, Agile, TV=A)
(B/P) Tokey (Big*, Powerful*, Mean, TV=A)
(B) Dick Rundle (Cheat*, Powerful, Mean*, TV=D)
(B/P) Al "Six Pack" Jackson (big, Powerful, Mean, TV=C)
(B/P) Elbert Kovac (Fast, Big, Mean*, Cheat, TV=B)
(B) Fred Bronson (Smart*, Big, TV=D)
(B) Tim Lind (Fast, TV=D)
(B/J) JeeberD Mack (Agile, Cheat*, TV=D)

SirFozzie
01-10-2006, 10:05 PM
The Wigfectas:

Well, they might not achieve the perfection that their name implies, but they will be a wignasty and wignifty team. Tyrone "The Bone" Malone, may be one of the top two pivots in the league, and the Idol Danny Donovan has bamboozled many a defense in his time.. but I'm not sure if the talent will be there. Ecept for Malone, they don't have any true superstars.

(P) Tyrone "The Bone" Malone (Powerful*, Smart, Mean, Cheat, TV=B)
(J/B) "The Idol" Danny Donovan (Agile, Fast, Smart*, TV=B)
(J/P) Vinny Gagliardo (Smart*, Fast, Tv=B)
(J) Danny Colavetti (Fast, Agile*, Smart, TV=B)
(J) Roland Redding (Fast*, Agile, Smart, TV=C)
(J/B), Clark "Cannon" Kinzer (Fast*, TV=C)
(P) Ed Dawson (Mean, Cheat*, TV=D)
(B) Walt Hightower (Star, Smart*, TV=C)
(B/P), Len Goldberg (Agile, Fast, TV=D)
(B) Bill Frederick (Mean*, Fast, Smart, TV=B)

SirFozzie
01-10-2006, 10:28 PM
The Dial-anetecs are basically a frozen candy bar. Rock hard on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside. They have three of the top players in the league.. after that? Just about nothing. If the top players go down, it will be a very long season for them.

(P) Bill Middleton (Powerful*, TV=C)
(P) Bud Hultz (Agile, Powerful, Fast, TV=C)
(J) Bobby Powers (Big, Fast, TV=C)
(J) Rafael Vega (Fast*, TV=B)
(J) Don "Toots" Delvechhio (Smart, Fast, Agile*, TV=B)
(J) Larry Sisson (Fast*, TV=C)
(B) Brock Barton (Big*, TV=D)
(J/B) Cornell Walker (Fast, Smart*, Big) TV=C
(B) Eugene "Whiplash" Lassiter (Big*, Mean, Cheat, TV=B)
(B/P) Freight Train Lane (Star, Powerful, Big*, Agile, Fast, TV=A)

There's no easy way to say it, so I'll be blunt. The Pointy Stix are not a very good team. They might be renamed the Pixie Stix by mid-season, but who knows.. they might actually be able to win a game.

(J) Bert Clarke (Fast, TV=D)
(B/P) Gene "Stick" Traylor (Big, Powerful, Mean*, TV=B)
(J/P) Mark Denman (Powerful, Big, TV=D)
(B) Ed "Machine Gun" Allen (Big, TV=D)
(P) Art Gaines (Smart*, TV=C)
(B/J) Anthony Traynor (Agile, TV=D)
(B) Bart Roberts (Big*, TV=F)
(B) Denny Cunningham (Powerful, Big*, Smart*, TV=B)
(B) Pete Gossett (BiG*, TV=D)
(B/P) Frank Pyne (Big*, Mean, TV=C)

Piointy Styx @ Wrecking Trouts:

This one got off to a Bang, ladies and gentlemen.. but not the one anyone expected. The Trouts came into this one confident, but the Pointy Styx had other ideas on how this game would start.. pre game. apparently, the Styx's Anthony Traylor was skating next to Coffee Warlord, and right before the ref blew the whistle, he crumpled to the track in simulated agony. The rest of the Styx were seemingly down with Traylor's plan, as they vociferously complained to the ref that Coffee Warlord had hit Traylor with a cheap shot before the whistle.. and the referee bought it hook, line and sinker. Before a second was off the clock, Coffee Warlord was in the box, and the Styx had the man advantage for two minutes.

The Styx took advantage of the distraction of the Trouts (as well as their obvious dissatisfaction with the referee!) and immediately jammed into the lead after the whistle to officially start the game, with Denman scoring a full 5 point jam.

The next jam was also started by the Styx, but apparently the Trouts had enough of the Styx's antics and shut them down, no score.

The third jam happened after Traylor had been sent to the box for an illegeal closed fist punch on King Johnny, which kept the Trout pivot off the track for the rest of the period while they tended to a small cut on his cheek. The Trouts took full advantage, with both Coffee Warlord and Danny Von Detox out in front of the pack when.. there suddenly was a chair in the middle of the banked track.. The referee had no choice to call off the jam... While it was suspicious that Traylor was standing up in the box, with no chair to be seen, it was assumed there was no way he could have thrown the chair without anyone seeing it, so he avoided further penalty.

But the Trouts were to tie things up before the end of the period, with Von Detox scoring a full 5 point jam of his own, capped off when Warlord bulldogged Traylor down at the front of the pack, causing a huge pileup, which Von Detox soared over.

At the end of 1.. 5-5.

SirFozzie
01-11-2006, 08:52 PM
2nd Period:

Now, THIS was more like what we thought we'd see.. the Trouts basically had it their own way this period, starting with the first jam, where King Johnny and Traylor were locked together around the banked turn, and Traylor tried to throw King Johnny off, but while he was trying to push off King Johnny, King Johnny guided him ever so surely.. until.. BOOM! Right into the infield penalty box.. and the carnage stopped the jam in place. Traylor was sidelined for the rest of the period.

Without their star instigator causing trouble, the Styx were vulnerable to the Trout jammers, first Von Detox with a 3 point jam, and then in successive jams, Coffee Warlord scored a five pointer and then a four pointer.. the Trouts scored 12 unanswered points in the period, and lead 17-5 after 2.

Don't EVEN fuck with the Trouts!

I think it's a two man team out there!

AIR FIVE

SirFozzie
01-11-2006, 09:08 PM
3rd Period: This had a little of some things, and a lot of others. THere were two jams early in the period.. the good news for the Styx was that Traynor (no relation to Traylor) and Clarke each got a point on a jam. The bad news was that Coffee Warlord (3) and Von Detox (4) scored on those jams too. That pushed the lead to 24-7 for the Trouts, but that was just the prelims.

First Traylor got his 2nd penalty of the game for a hard back kick to King Johnny.. then things really got crazy.

With Traylor in the box, the Trouts were trying to set up a powerplay jam.. when a huge fight broke out. Pyne had grabbed King Johnny from behind and drove him into the safety rail chest first. an angry King Johnny threw a wicked elbow that nearly seperated Pyne's head from his body, and then Traynor jumped in, throwing punches at King Johnny, and ticking off a general melee.

When the dust cleared, Traynor, Pyne and King Johnny were all ejected (and thus suspended for round 2). Clarke also got a roughing penalty late in the period.

We're at halftime, and the Trouts lead by 17.

SirFozzie
01-11-2006, 09:32 PM
4th Period: The Trouts started to slow things down, letting their subs take a jam or two, and with the game in hand, it didn't affect them much. Warlord with another 5 point jam (his 2nd of the match, 17 points so far on the day).. and it was 29-7 after 4.

5th Period: Well, this game is out of reach for the Styx, and their frustration was showing through, Norton of the trouts tangling up with Cunningham of the Styx at the end of the Period, both players earning a penalty for their infraction. Denman, the lone star for the Styx today, had a 3 point jam, and Von Detox had a single point, and with one period to play, the Trouts have tripled up the Styx, 30-10.

SirFozzie
01-11-2006, 09:48 PM
The final period was more about two incidents and how the fans reacted. Warlord scored a three point jam, and took himself out, saluting the fans, and getting cheered. Von Detox ended up getting a penalty for MOONING a Styx player who had thrown him into the infield to general cheers.. and Gene "Stick" Traylor got a bit of his own medicine at the hands of the Dirtiest Player in the Game (no, Not Ric Flair), "Sick" Doyle Shick. In the final minutes, Shick kept up a running commentary to Traylor as they went around the track...

"Gee, gettin your ass beat by 20, I bet you wanna hurt something."
"I'd point you to the scoreboard, but I think we've caused you enough pain today.."
"Tell me, if a Roller Derby Team gets their ass beat, and nobody gives a damn about them, do they still cry in the lockerroom?"
And finally..
"Gee, you gonna let me get on your case like that? I'm not surprised, you're too much of a (censored) to do anything about it..."

And Traylor did something about it.. flooring Shick with a left hand.. and then the whistle blew.. and Traylor realized what Shick had done. Suckered him into taking his third penalty, and getting himself tossed from the game.

Traylor had to nod grudgingly. Just like he had outplayed Warlord at the start of the game, Shick nicked the Stick at the end.

Final stats coming up, but this one is over, 33-10 the Trouts win.

I'll tell you what, CW, if you do, it's gonna because a large part of Doyle Shick. The guy has three stats.. and they're all starred!! That means that even if the opponent HAS the skill, he wins and advances you one step towards a jam (a power jam is the 4th step on the track, a regular jam is the 3rd step), and by the end of the game, where I was checking stats that he had that the opposing pivot didn't, that's TWO steps on the jam. It was NUTS.

I was trying to sub you out, you guys only have 3 jammers (and if you put a non -jammer in the spot, his skills do not count when checking the points on a jam).. and then King Johnny got tossed, so it's just you and Von Detox :)

Roller Rumble is one of the best tabletop games from a non-major genre I've ever seen.

If you've got it & remember the LA T-Birds with the same fondness I do, be sure to get the user-created cards at tabletop-sports.com -- Ralphie Valladares, Skinny Minny Gwen Miller, Mister Mean Harold Jackson, Psycho Ronnie Rains & a whole bunch more
(92 players carded in the set).

They're in the "Download" section, under "Other Games"/"Roller Rumble"

I remember your loop that you were posting over on Delphi Forums, Jon.. I had one too (under the username Tarislan, you'd need to be a paid member to search, let me see if I can find you a link)

[QUOTE=SirFozzie]ah here it is :)/QUOTE]

Y'know, you really ought to finish that sometime, if only to get the All-Star game in there (nice idea with the format & perfectly modern-era-comes-to- roller-derby-gimmicky).

Yeah yeah, I know ... I'm a fine one to talk to anybody about what they "ought" to finish when it comes to dynasties ;)

I'm planning to run it after week 5 of the FRDL ;)

(Basically, for those of you who didn't read that link, I had an idea for a AllStar game that would bring all the teams for one big game.. this was a standard Roller Derby League, (the women's team would skate the odd periods the men's the even periods, 8 periods).

The 8 Teams would be paired up, and represent the east and west. Each team would skate two periods (1 men 1 women) against their rival. The result would count in the standings.. and at the end of the night, teams would get a win or loss based off the overall score.

Long winded, I know.. but hey.. meanwhile, I've started the Elitist vs Dialanetics game.. and you will get updates AS THEY HAPPEN.

The Dialanetics were in town to take on the Elitists, and the game plan for the Elitists was simple (well, besides just plain "Score more points then the other team", of course). And that was to attempt to keep the star blockers for the Dialanetics from hurting them too badly, and hope to take advantage with their better jammers.

And it worked somewhat to perfection in the first period, as despite Lane getting three first period assists, they led the pack out on all three jams in the period.. unfortunately, with Lane and Lassiter back in the pack, neither Travis Roy nor Blade scored in either of the two jams, and Walker scored on a defensive jam for the Dialanetics.. to give them a 3-0 lead.

On the final jam, however, Roy and Blade had a plan.. they wouldn't allow Lassiter or Lane to pick on them singly.. they both jammed at the same time, and Lassiter and Lane couldn't set up a double team on either of them.. they both swung and missed, and the two Elitist jammers slipped past them, scoring two points each to give the Elitists a 4-3 lead after one period.

The 2nd Period was back and forth, with Delvecchio scoring a 3 point jam early, with Blade respoinding quickly on a jam of his own, but only able to get one point. Roy seemingly had an advantage, but he got two points, but didn't see Delvechio slip by, and the Dialanetics jammer scored four points on the defensive jam, and they looked to have an advantage at the end of the period, however, Roy made up for his mistakes with a four pointer of his own on a Elitist powerplay (Hultz off for tripping), and the Elitists lead after 2, 11-10. To make things better, Delvecchio was called for delay of game after protesting a decision late in the period and he will begin the 3rd period spending the first two minutes in the sin bin.

We're at halftime, and consecutive 3 pointers from Delvechhio have the Dialanetics come back just before the break, and take the lead.. 16-15 over the Elitists. Telling stat: The Elitist jammers have NOT come through for them today.. they have started 8 of the 11 jams so far.. but still trail.

The beginning of the 2nd half showed how low the Elitist coach's patience was with players who he thought were underperforming, despite decent stats in the game, as for Roy, and then KA Ton, were pulled off the track mid jam early in the period to get an earful from the coach. The sight of their main men being chewed out apparently fired up the Elitist defense, as they held strong, not allowing a single Dialanetic jammer to score on four jams in the fourth period.

However, they only got two points themselves (1 by Blade, and 1 by rarely used substitute Irv "Bum" Young) but that's enough to give the Elitists a slim lead heading into the final two periods, 17-16, and one has to think that Roy and KA Ton are going to be heading out on the track for the fifth period hoping to do well, if only to get their coach off their back.

Well, Roy came back with a quick two point jam, to open the period, and KA Ton seems to be doing better, so it looks like the coach's little pep talk did them some good.

However, misfortune struck the Elitists, when Blade was about to break free to start a jam, coming round a corner, he tried to pass on the inside of "freight train" Lane and got a hard (but legal) hip check that sent him way out of control, and speeding towards the Dialanetic bench, where they scattered as he came in.. crashing over the bench and rolling to a stop!

Fortunately, he wasn't hurt, just shaken up, but Blade had skated his last jam for the game, as the Doctors wanted to make sure he was ok. The two teams were not happy with each other (a couple Elitists thought that the Dialanetics should have cushioned the blow, and the Dialanetics were having nothing to do with THAT idea)

While the Elitists were recovering, Delvecchio scored a point for the Dialanetics, but that was all he could get, and late in the period, Young scored his 2nd and third points of the game, and entering the final twelve minutes, have a decent lead, 21-17, but it's still anyone's game.

6th Period: The turning point of this game would have seemed to come when the Elitist coach put Eugene Dixon on Freight Train Lane, and early in the period, Lane was rudely introduced face first in to the safety rail, and knocked cold.. (out for the rest of the game.)

But then, with 2:20 to play, the Dialanetics broke free, and went for broke, and it was the Elitists who were broke, as substitute jammer Bobby Powers scored a full jam, passing all 5 Elitist defenders to give the Dialanetics a 1 point lead.. 22-21!

Time was running out, and with just 1:00 to play when the pack led off, the Elitists weere in big rouble.. if they didn't get a jam off, the game was over, but the rules in roller derby state that once a jam has started, theperiod does not end until after the end of the jam, so if an Elitist jammer got free, they had a full minute to Jam.

And with :08 to play, the Elitists fans roared as Young broke through the pack! The jam was on! He looked behind him for help, but Roy was caught up at the back of the pack.. and Young was the Elitists only hope. The Jam Clock was ticking down, and they needed something.. with five seconds on the jam, KA Ton, at the front of the pack, hipchecked a Dialanetic har enough to send him into the infield, and with 2 seconds left in the jam, Young had scored one point!

When the final buzzer sounded, it was bedlam. We have a 22-22 tie..

And since there are no ties in Roller Derby,.. this will get settled the old fashioned way... in a three lap MATCH RACE. The winner of the Match Race will win his team one point, and thus, the game..

Both teams went deep into the huddle, and selected who would skate in the match race..

Match Race Jammers:

Elitists Ty "Golden Boy" Roy
Dialanetics: Cornell Walker

This one was a series of events that were all somewhat similar.. Walker was faster then Roy, so Roy had to skate a good race if he was going to win. Each time that Walker looked like he was going to get ahead, Roy would pull him back, and knocking him back with his superior track skills. Walker would draft for a moment, and then try to pass again.. almost getting ahead, and then getting knocked back again.
with a half lap to go, Walker dropped back a bit more, thinking to take a run at Roy down the stretch and pass him before the Elitist could stop him.

He turned on the afterburners.. and just as he caught up with Roy.. Roy stepped right into his path. Walker tried to change course, skidded out, and tumbled down off the track, and into the infield, and despite Walker being halfway across the course by this point, you have to do it on the track, and Ty Roy crossed the line and the Elitists had won the game, 23-22!
