View Full Version : One of the scariest mornings in my life!

As some of you know, my wife is pregnant for 7 months already. Today we had the O'Sullivan test. It's a test that after not eating anything for the last 12 hours, she drinks a lot of sugar mixed with water and they test the amount of sugar in blood every hour for 3 hours.

We went at 8:30 am, she drank the sugar, had the first blood test and was told to sit for an hour. The room was full of women with their husbands so the nurses told the husbands to go out for a walk, as there were too much people in the room and anyway the women had to sit there for 3 hours not doing any movement (to avoid the waste of sugar in their bodies).

So my wife told me to go home and come back in 2 hours. I went out and when i was driving home, she phoned me "Come back fast, fast....!!" and then the phone sounded like crashing on the floor. I drove as fast as i could to the hospital, left the car in the middle of the road and entered so fast inside the hospital. Asked every nurse and they had no idea where my wife was, until one of them told me to go to the emergency area. I went there, and another nurse told me that my wife was ok, she had a sudden drop in blood pressure that caused her to faint and they wanted to perform some tests on her and the baby so i should wait outside in the waiting room.

Then a women who was sitting close to me, started to press his hands towards the sit and to take long breaths. I looked at her and she was about to cry, i asked her, hey are you ok? And she said no with the head and pointed to between her legs, the amniotic fluid was being drop! She was about to give birth and could barely talk because the pain, i ran to the nurse and told her about it and they took the women to the emergency room too.

Then another nurse asked for me and told me to go to the pre-birth rooms, my wife was there!! WTF!!!

I ran there, and then a nurse was already asking for Encarni's (my wife) husband. I told her i was and she told me to dress a green plastic shirt and shoes that she provided me, and to enter at the pre-birth room!!! Damn!! i asked her, but is she already giving birth??? she is only 7 months pregnant!! Tons of thoughts crossed my mind, could the babe survive with only 7 months? would she and my wife be ok? The nurse said, no idea, i just have been told to tell you to enter in room #3. I dressed the green clothes and ran to the pre-birth room #3 and there was my wife, lying on a bed but in good shape and dressed. She looked at my scared face and green clothes (that i dressed the wrong way because the excitement and because i haven't ever dressed the damn doctor's clothes), then a doctor explained me that it was just a blood pressure drop caused for the long hours not eating anything, but nothing to worry about. They put her in the pre-birth room because there they have the monitors to listen to our baby and the better tools to perform all the emergency tests to pregnant women. As there are a lot of births there, the nurses don't know about every woman there and they tell every husband to dress those clothes to enter to that hospital area just in case your wife could be already giving birth.

She and our future baby were made a lot of test and all is ok, the baby looks healthy and so does my wife. We are back at home, my wife is so tired and sleeping, and i'm still recovering from the shock. I guess this is how this last two months are going to be, specially when closer to the birth date (mid of March). I'm still scared just from writing it, what a stressing morning.

Sorry for the scare. I had a couple of bad scares when my first was born. It really does shake you up.

wow Icy, even though it looks like everything will be all right, take good care of the mommy.

I'm sure this will be the kind of story you will be telling to your kid some 20 years from now, showing him how he/she got you worried even a couple months before birth :D

Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy!

glad everything turned out ok for ya
yeah, most natural birthing people dont recommend the glucose test to parents,or to anyone actually, cuz it's so stressful on the body-going without eating is pretty bad, and no one normally ingests that much sugar at once..if a woman has GD they will usually show other signs, and the false positive result rates on it are pretty huge.
anyways, have a great 2 more months:)

Yeah, there are plenty of more indicators of gestational diabetes than those tests. I also don't understand why they don't do the tests earlier in the pregnancy when it is not as tasking on the body.

Ditto what he said. I've ever heard of a glucose tolerance test being done so late in the pregnancy.

Just to allay your fears a bit, a baby usually survives at 7 months (assuming you are near a big hospital), however, it is obviously much better to go full term. I hope the rest of the pregnancy goes smoothly.

Wow, crazy, glad it worked out ok!!!

Though I'm sure your wife wouldn't have minded terribly having the baby (I mean, if it was ok for a healthy delivery), but glad to hear that all are well!!!

Good luck in your last 2 months of pregnancy!!!
