The banner ad I keep seeing on this very site faetures a nice graphic representation of some sort of monster with a badass sword, in a traditional dungeon setting... good stuff...

Then it's followed by the "flavor" text designed to set the scene properly for the D&D enthusiasts among us...

Your in an abandoned ruin...

So, what I'm getting here is these guys can draw pretty pictures and can't spell. Anything I'm missing.

Fucktards.

I have my doubts about D&D online... entirely questbased is one thing.. nice that they try new paths.. MMORPGs need some refreshing ideas.

But the fact that it's Turbine is not a good start.. and personally I've always felt that D&D isn't suited for MMORPGs.. Smaller servers where the characters actually could have a dynamic effect on the gameworld without tilting some sort of balance should be the way to go.. but that's just me.. don't know enough about Eberron to have a comment on that gameworld, but of all TSR/Wizard gameworlds for D&D, my absolute favourite is the Birthright world..

Edit: isn't.. not is.. damn

"Your in an abandoned ruin..."

I was reading this yesterday during the Bears game and I thought it said "So you've abandoned the run."

I know it's a nitpicky typo... but don't you think this is, to some degree, fair to use as a basis for some impression of the game? If the dolts who are putting the game together are as carefree about attention to detail as the marketing staff, this game will just be lousy. I have limited time to invest in this stuff... I don't need people raised by wolves to be making my games. I'll pass.

From what I've heard from the beta, passing is probably a good idea...

not that I had any interest for that game but to answer your question, it is absolutely fair to use it as a basis to judge the whole company, at least to me it is.

Obviously to be taken with a few dozen grains of salt, but most blogs/comments/whatnot regarding Beta Testing point to this being a dog.

I'll just wait around for single player BGIII or a new goldbox AD&D game.

Holding breath starting......now.

I agree with Coder. The D&D world is more suited to small parties, since afterall, that's what the rules are based around. It's one thing to make an Everquest or World of Warcraft where everything starts off from scratch. It's another to take an established set of rules for a big world having a small party in it and trying to force it to be a MMORPG. I am skeptical, but can't say I won't give it a shot.

More likely, the carefree attention to detail of the marketing staff is a symptom of a bigger problem -- a general rush to get things out the door, QA be damned. I'd say there's a decent chance that might reflect badly on the dev side as well.

Is it telling that I saw that ad when I first logged on this morning, and now it's gone, replaced by an ad for their stress test?

A few years ago a guy bought several cases of frisbees with a brief schpiel about the company to give away as tschotke at trade shows. The schpiel included the non-word "Managment".

It was actually weeks before I noticed the error, but that didn't stop me from hazing the guy who signed off on the frisbees.

My wife used to work as a proofreader and now as an assistant managing editor for a company that prints scientific journals. The point being, it's pretty detail oriented stuff. They used to get the memos handed down by HR and pick out all the typos in them. Yet it was no reflection on how good their journal work does. It was an entirely different part of the company.

I don't understand why BG3 hasn't happened yet. I'm eagerly waiting for both of those as well..

Didn't a good bit of the BG2 staff end up working on NWN?

The funny thing is, I was about to start a thread complaining about this same thing. Seriously hurts the interest I had in the game.

Is there a BG 3 in development?
i know that there is a NWN 2 due this year and, it looks awesome.

Hm. Although I suppose a question can be raised as to whether it's the D&D people who did the marketing for this or fileplanet's.

Unfortunately, there is no BG3 in development, but fans of the series keep hoping it will eventually be made.

Totally agree. When I heard it was Eberron I was like Meh.

If you are trading on it being the 'iconic' D&D franchise then put it in Greyhawk or the Realms. Even Mystara would have been way cool (walking into the Black Jug Tavern would be nice). All you have now is a semi-familiar set of rules, after the butchering to turn it into an Action MMORPG, in an unfamiliar setting all under the D&D banner.

And yes, Birthright is by far my favourite setting. Favourite BR sourcebook: King of the Giantdowns.
