I mean really, small school in the great northwest, what are the odds. If you have ever been to Spokane you will understand it is not the outpost of the universe. What the Zags do there is amazing...

Wow, Cringer was mayor of Spokane?

...meanwhile, back at Gonzaga...
I just assumed it was all the guys who idolized John Stockton when they were growing up are now choosing to go there.

All the guys going to school there now probably don't even know who John Stockton is.

Pretty sure they have heard more about Stockton than they care about. Something tells me they celebrate the fact he is an alumni.

You can't be in Spokane long without knowing Stockton went to Gonzaga. Slightly lesser known is Ryan Sandberg being from Spokane too. Our great claim to fame.
The mayor comment Loren made is about the Mayor who was recently caught picking up teenage boys online.
On to Gonzaga, itis very cool to see his school do so well. I don't get to see or here any of there games until post season play usually but I enjoy seeing them there every year now. I have never had a hometown team in any sport (the closest would be Eastern Washington Univ. or Washington State Univ.) and to have one as a major player is pretty cool.
Oh, and some more claim to sports fame for Spokane. Tommy Lasorda once managed the Spokane Indians baseball team. Pat Falloon (sp?) played for the Spokane Chiefs and was one of the first players drafted by the San Jose Sharks when they were an expansion franchise. (I could be off on his draft position but I remember it being high).

Gonzaga is still a "darling" of college hoops because of their success from six years back or so they get more media coverage than most mid majors, which helps get them on TV. Another thing that actually helps them is that they are on the West Coast, which allows them to play on ESPN more ofter.
Gonzaga can get on Big Monday because they are in the West Coast, and there are not that many good times that play in the Pacific Time Zone. If Gonzaga were a mid major in the East Coast, there is no way they would be playing on ESPN over Big East, ACC, Big Ten, or Big Twelve teams.
Media exposure is huge for recruiting.
In addition, having players such as Dan Dickau and Richie Frahm playing in the NBA doesn't hurt much either. Placing players int he NBA is a huge selling point for recruiting as well.

Memphis smacked them around. We shut down Adam "Dirty Sanchez" Morrison the last ten minutes of the game.

My fiancee's best high school friend was their #1 or #2 starting pitcher before being drafted last year, so they are my favourite college basketball/baseball team.
I completely agree with Lathum - for a small school their hoops program is incredible, and Adam Morrison is a great player.

Okay. Your post is half good analysis and half utter bullshit.
You correctly adress the fact that they had huge tourney sucess a few years back and that they have a few guys in the nba.
What you neglect to mention is that they contunially beat high quality top conference teams ever year. Sure they lost to some like Memphis, Washington, and UCONN. All reasonable top10 picks at this point.
But they beat Michigan State, Maryland, Virginia, St.Joe, Oklohoma State, Washington State, and an improved St.Louis team. You go out and play the teams they do and beat them 7 times out of 10 you deserve respect.
Not to mention that they have the best offensive weapon in the country in Adam Morrision.

You are going to try to tell me that if they played on the East Coast, they would be getting on the 7PM ESPN games..... I don't think so. Gonzaga is a nice regional West Coast shool with a good marquee player and average supplemental players
BTW my post was a civil post and it is pretty rediculous that you have to pull the bullshit line, no need to be like that just because you disagree.

LOL. The game was close until the last minute, and you neglect to mention that Morrisson torched Memphis for what? 34 points in the first 30 minutes.

You think the late start times help them? Uhhh...You think Digger Phelps and Dukie V are staying up at 1 am watching the second half of Gonzaga/LMU? I don't THINK so.

I think the look is great because it is a distraction to the other team. Honestly, would you want to guard a guy that looked like that. Maybe that is why he scores so easily, there is no way that dude showers, so who wants to guard him :).
All kidding aside he is a really good college player, who should win player of the year because he carries his team more so than Reddick

The late start helps them because otherwise they would not have been on national television. Any national exposure is better than no exposure, and that is what would happen if they played on the East coast.

Actually, it has to do with television contracts more than anything else. The PAC-10 has an exclusive deal with FOX Sports for the rights to the conference games, making it the only major conference that doesn't have games shown on ESPN. This leaves a hole for smaller conferences such as the WAC, WCC, and MWC to have their night games shown.

Right and that is why it works for Gonzaga being a mid major out west. If they were an East Coast Mid Major, they would not be on Big Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. The best they would be able to do is get on ESPN on the weekends.
That being said, remember in my initial point that I gave credit to Gonzaga for NCAA success and having players drafted in the NBA, however the TV exposure has been a key to continued sucess where other mid majors have only been able to maintain success for a few years while Gonzaga has been able to sustain it.

We won by 11. That is a double digit win. Morrison was shut down when his team needed him the most. I think like 17 of those were free throws. The refs really protected him.

Well, if you brag about holding someone to 34 points, then I guess you're just gonna brag about holding someone to 34 points.

Well, if you brag about holding someone to 34 points, then I guess you're just gonna brag about holding someone to 34 points.Memphis did shut him down for the last 10 minutes of the game, though, right? And that's when Memphis started to pull away, right? Morrison could've scored 60 points in the first 30 minutes, but if the defense keeps him from winning the game for Gonzaga, I think that's at least something to brag about.
