Voting for Bush is absoutely rediculous. The only people who vote for him are those that feel war is almost NEVER justified, regardless of the situation. Which do you fear more: nuclear weapons in the hands of Bush and the U.S., or nuclear weapons in the hands of N. Korea or Iran. Give me a break.

I'd argue that GWB has the least accountability - N.Korea, along with every other country in the world, are extremely unlikely to start a serious fight with the US because at the end of the day they know they will get their ass kicked. Therefore they have an indirect accountability - their own political and personal survival.

All of the posturing of N.Korea is exactly that - so they can produce propoganda saying they stood up to the mighty bullies of America, but if it came to the point of actual war, they would back down sharpish.

This is the same throughout the world, which actually makes the US the least accountable to a certain extent, as the govt knows that no-state will invade them and likely win, while they can attack anybody they see as an annoyance or for public opinion purposes - see Iraq: GWB & Blair flew in the face of the UN, who are the body to whom they are supposedly accountable.

I would agree with this dispassionate analysis--in a nutshell, GWB already has the track record that the other men (probably including Carrot Top) do not. He is the most powerful, has demonstrated the will to use that power, and is accountable to no one in the international community (and arguably, even domestically to some extent).

I'm not moralizing here, that is just the nature of international politics where the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must (Thucydides).

Here's the problem, Kim Il Jong is completely bonkers. It's like the old days with a crazy duke living in a castle. Except this time the crazy duke has nuclear technology and likes to fund terrorism. China would keep him from launching nukes, but they won't stop him from working with terrorists.

Not true on the terrorism point--the North Koreans haven't funded terrorist groups in years, although they do sell military technology to states that do.

The direction the money flows. North Korea is taking money in from states with questionable reputations, but it is not disbursing money to terrorist groups.

But he is providing weapons to states that give those same weapons to terrorist groups. They're just using a middle man and making a profit while doing it.

It still means they are funding terrorism, albeit indirectly. I don't think the technology they sell is being applied to building windmills and tractors.

Fair point, but that is not the same as sponsorship. The weapons trade makes for some very strange bedfellows--in fact, Israel and Iran had a secret armaments trade relationship in the 80s.

As for the North Koreans, they don't care who they sell to, so I am not sure there is direct intent. I am sure that they do not mind the indirect connection to terrorist groups, but the primary intention is to raise hard currency. This reminds me of a friend of mine from Texas (and quite the gun collector) who once told me that even American civilians can get their hands on North Korean produced weaponry. To circumvent the American trade embargo, the North Koreans sell AK-47 rounds, for example, to a middle man country who then legally sells to Americans...

What North Korea allows explicitly (not caring with whom money/technology is traded) the governments of Pakistan & Saudi Arabia allow implicitly (not trying all that hard to curb the transfer of money/technology to third parties).

One could argue that Musharraf's come much closer to the brink with India than North Korea has come (in recent history) with any of its neighbors. Plus, China has a vested interest in keeping North Korea from destabilizing the region. Musharraf has no such limiting power.

One could argue that the House of Saud has allowed an exponentionally greater outflow of money to terrorist organizations than North Korea has (or even can). Furthermore, unlike Kim Il Jong, who will eventually die, opening the possibility for a more reasonable head of state, the House of Saud is likely to continue its policies, no matter whom is at its head.

GWB is.... accountable to no one in the international community (and arguably, even domestically to some extent).

This was one of two accountabilities GWB had - the aim to get re-elected, for which he needed the support of the US public. Now he does not have this personal accountability, as he is in his 2nd term, but the party as a whole will want to stay after GWB goes, so the internal advisors who will want to keep their jobs under a new administration would be to some level holding him back if he had the sudden urge to do something stupid, like for example bombing Al Jazeera :rolleyes:
