He lost his kickoff job to someone that could actually kick it into the end zone regularly, and with him being a free agent , I look for the Colts to find someone else. Idiot kicker indeed.
He has great stats, but can't perform under pressure. He also has a mouth that his foot can't back up either. Better for him to swallow it to the thigh instead. Hope the Colts go after another kicker.

No, how about less than a week after he missed a key field goal that might have helped his team move on to the AFC Championship Game, he's yucking it up on Letterman with a big frikkin' grin on his face?
instead of commiting suicide?!?!?!?!?!Oh, those are the only choices? Whoops, sorry, I forgot it was Schmidty talking.

Considering that he gets paid millions of dollars to kick an oddly shaped ball between some poles and go on national tv and joke around with Dave Letterman, I think the grin is understandable.

I don't see a problem with this. If I were a fan of the Colts, I'd be annoyed, but the anger at the guy for trying to move on with his life, smile, and be positive is really off-base. Of course, that is only my opinion.
Oh, those are the only choices? Whoops, sorry, I forgot it was Schmidty talking.
No need to get your panties in a twist. I was just using hyperbole to illustrate the type of anger Colts fans have for the guy. Thanks for cute little shot. I still love ya though. :)

I agree, but I think it has more to do with past things, than that one instance. I don't think it would matter what he did in public, since they would hate him anyway.

Colts, Vanderjagt, Manning...whatever. Too much drama for yo mama.
Vanderjagt and Manning both choke, so what's the point? Manning stays because he'd be a huge salary cap hit and the Colts would lose money on jersey sales. I don't think that Vanderjagt brings in much money for the Colts.

I watched it and it wasnt that bad. No doubt not the smartest thing to do, but he accepted blame for the miss. Letterman is a Colts fan so he gave him a bit of crap for missing the FG. Two other Colts were also there(longsnapper and holder?) FWIW.

I don't know how many of these were to win games but I seem to remember that his big miss after that sequence was one that would have given the win to the Colts against the Pats, wasn't it?
Anyway, for the same reason as you stated later in the thread, the guy's a distraction...

Not sure what that has to do with this thread, and I've said nothing about Manning that I didn't say about Brady this year. Feel free to look up my thoughts on the Broncos game.
But if falling back to things I said 6 months ago makes you feel better go for it. Bottom line is Vanderjagt would not be getting smacked around by people like he is now if he wasn't on the Colts. Guilt by association. That has nothing to do with past analysis.

Don't really know too much about Vanderjagt - his stats, performances, or whatever else goes on with him and the Colts (obviously aside from what's on the news) but I've always thought a kicker who wears an earring is a bit weird. Are there any other kickers who wear earrings?
Vinatieri for Prez

Vanderjagt is an excellent kicker, but . . . he has missed under pressure. This one, and then earlier against the Pats, he spouted off calling them "ripe for the picking," taunted them and proceeded to miss the game winning kick from about 40 yards or so. So, I don't know -- he hasn't shown he can kick under extreme pressure, but he does win you some games in the regular season. Sounds like the perfect Colts player to me.

Don't forget the rubbing of the forefinger and thumb together indicating "money" towards the Patriots sideline right before he missed. That was a classic football moment for me.

Amazing that Colts fans now hate the guy cause he did not make EVERY field goal. Amazing how fans forget that 40 yard field goals are HARD. Teams make roughly 60% of them. Missing ONE from beyond 40 yards does not mean one cannot kick under pressure, it just means you miss some. If kickers could control which ones they miss, guess what, they'd never miss.
If your team misses a 40+ yard FG to win/tie, etc., and you blame the kicker, you completely do not understand the game of football.

I suppose the right answer is that everyone should wish he is locked in his home, crying all the time, and eating anti-depressants like they are candy?
People make mistakes on their jobs all the time, but I don't think they should all be locked in their homes on a suicide watch for it. We're all human beings and we should be able to move on past those incidents.

I agree that he is not a pressure kicker. Vinatieri makes that kick in the snow and the swirling wind. That and the fact that he feels the need to shoot his mouth of tells me they should get rid of him.
I know Manning has the choker label, but his line did almost nothing to help him against Pittsburgh. I don't think even the esteemed Tom Brady could have done much when faced with that pressure. If you disagree, please rewind to his loss to Denver.

Why do you automatically jump to the conclusion that it has to be so extreme the other way? According to your way of thinking, all of the Colts should be either joyously mocking their team's demise or "locked in their homes, crying all the time, and eating anti-depressants." For that matter, every NFL player except for those on the Steelers and Seahawks should be doing Letterman or on suicide watch. Huh?
The question still stands - which, I might add, no one seems to have noticed - if you were a member of the Indianapolis Colts, how would you feel about this? If I was his teammate, I wouldn't like it. Apparently, it doesn't bother you (and others). So we can agree to disagree. But please, hold off on the dramatics.

How about getting a first down with two first downs on 3rd and 4th and 2? No, we'll let Superman try for the homerun and rely on a kicker to make a long on if that fails.
Vanderjagt is partly to blame for this loss, but he is at least seventh down that list after Manning, the oline and Dungy, who ultimately calls the shots.

Ok. It doesn't bother me. I wouldn't consider it anything more than part of a recovery. It was obvious he felt really bad about it at the time and that is all that matters. If he had missed the kick and then wanted to start joking around about it immediately there would be a problem.

You mean idiot kicker gate a few years ago? Those comments did not say "I'll make every kick" I don't recall many comments about how good he was.
As for talking it big and not backing it up deserving ridicule, this appplies to all aspects of life, no? You can hate Vanderjagt all you want - I think he's an asshole myself. "FOXBORO, Mass. -- So confident was Colts kicker Mike Vanderjagt that he would make a tying, 48-yard field goal with 24 seconds remaining in Thursday night's league opener against the Patriots at Gillette Stadium -- and why wouldn't he be; he had only connected on a league-record 42 in a row -- that he turned toward the Patriots' sideline before setting up for the kick and rubbed a few of his fingers together.

And you interpret this to mean he guaranteed he would make every kick from then on?
Not saying you're wrong in interpreting it that way, just trying to figure out where you're coming from when you say he talked big about this game or this kick.
But, again, none of this has to do with my original statement. Vanderjagt missing a 46 yd FG is not THE reason the Colts lost this game, as so many know-nothing-about-football Colts fans seem to believe.
