I know a few others have messed around with starting careers in the 1970's and quick simming up to 2002. When I tried it I had started out with a salary cap of 20 million, but the cap was way out of whack by the time I got to 2002. Has anyone played around with it and gotten a realistic salary cap after simming a historic league? For example if you start in 1975 with a salary cap of $2 million, will it be around $60 million in 2002? I'm guessing we could probably get a "rough" estimate by calculating a average yearly increase to the cap, but I haven't done that yet and was curious if anyone else has.

With a little help from guys around here I was able to find out how much on average the cap rises each year. After that I did some math and thought about what I want the cap to be at when I'm done quick simming. I started out in the year 1991 with a cap of $20 mil and quick simmed until 2002. The cap was at $70 by then and I just started playing normaly. It rises a little more than $5 mil per year.

I'm guessing the $5 mil per year average is specific for starting in 1991. I assume it's some type of percentage of the cap that it raises each year? Say around 5% or 10% or something like that?

Unfortunately no it is not based on a percentage. The cap will raise a 5 million or so every year when you first start out, no matter what you set your starting out cap to be. I was hoping the same thing but unfortunately it was not to be. You can get in about 11 years worth of quick simming if you want before the cap gets up to $70 mil. Which is roughly the default starting salary cap in the game.

That bites. I wonder if there is any way Jim could change that?

I sent Jim an email making the suggestion to change it to be based more on a percentage of the total salary cap as opposed to a "randomly" fixed number. We'll see if it's possible or not...

That would be a very good idea. Never really came to me during the chat. I really hope he goes for it. Good thinkin! :)

Well after a couple emails from Jim, it doesn't look like it will change.

I suggested the percentage increase and he made a good point that after a long time the salary cap number will be increasing by unbelievable numbers that probably wouldn't be possible to display.

I then suggested an increase by percentage up to $5 mill increase, and then to go with the existing method of a randomly "fixed" range. His reply was that it was considered originally but he went with a "fixed" range so the method didn't change. He said the game would need an email telling the GM of the change.

I don't agree with that since there is already an email telling you what the salary cap increase is every year (the gamer doesn't need to know "how" it is derived IMO). But I'm not the designer, so it looks like this won't change (another blow for us gamers who want to have a historic league to play in).

Ahhh...I never thought of that. Bummer....

Well it was worth the shot.

I was thinking more about this and sent off another email to Jim.

My suggestion this time was to have a place in the player editor to modify the "increase in salary cap" (along with the salary cap itself). That would allow us to take it down to say a base increase of $1 million a year.

I don't know if he'd be willing to do that, but if I annoy him enough who knows. :D
