Snow in the ATL?

Metro Atlanta folks, help me out. When's the last time we had significant SNOW (not ice) accumulation, as in enough to cover the roads? We had like an inch or two in 1999, I think, which caused the infamous MARTA bus crash in front of my house. I'm having a hard time remembering any other since the blizzard in '93. I'm thinking there have been one or two, but my memory is coming up blank.

It seems that whenever we have significant snow or ice, the preciptation cools the atmosphere and the temperature ends up hovering around freezing all day, rather than rising into the 40's like they always predict. Of course, now that I've said it, watch me be wrong this time. :p

My office and my wife's as well have a standard across-the-board policy for everyone: if DeKalb County schools are closed due to weather, so are we.

My employer never closes. When this weather happens, they say that you either come in, burn a vacation day (if you have one), or face possible disciplinary review. If you live in an area of the city that got hit hard, despite how it may be at HQ, they officially say, "We did not tell you to live in that area." There is always some conflict around here when this sort of weather hits.

Yeah, I do parts ordering for medical equipment, meaning we're open 24/7. We work in a 15 story building. If it was flooding up to the 14th story, they'd tell everyone to go up to the 15th and get to work. And they'd open the windows so people could get in.

Our road-clearing method is not much beyond a couple of good ol' boys with a pickup and a bucket o' salt. ;)

Like I said, I'm having a hard time remembering more than twice that there's been really any snow on the road in the last 13 years--and one of those was the bizarre blizzard that just nailed us back in '93.

To explain further, the DOT does send out a few trucks for the highways and main roads, but in neighborhoods, we just have to wait 'til it gets driveable and hope that there's no black ice out there (which usually forms on the tail end of these things...)

Definitely a regional thing. Significant snow accumulation in the Midwest is at least 6 inches. In you territory, I'm sure it's at least a foot.

I moved away from atlanta in 96, but the only two real big snowfalls I remember were in 93 and in umm either 80 or 81 I think. Both cases it causes any form of transportation to be tough to go anywhere for 2-3 days. I think both times it was 3-5 inches of a mixture of snow and ice. It doesn't seem like much now compared to what I get living in Massachusetts, but Georgia simply doesn't have the snow plows or salt/sand trucks to deal with snowfall. So it literaly shut down the town for a few days.

dola, speaking of the 93 snowfall that hit us, I was living in Northeast cobb at the time, but my mother had remarried and lived in Jesup (south georgia). She had just bought a new house the week before over near Dallas, Ga just SW of Marietta , but had not moved up yet. When the snow hit, she had just gotten water and such turned on in the house but wasnt living there yet and was afraid the pipes would freeze. I tried to drive out there but could not even get to 575 to get on the highway so had to turn back. 2 days later, I finally made it out there, but there was a huge gaping hole in the ceiling of the living room with water pouring out of it like a waterfall. (Their pipes ran in the ceiling in this house instead of the floor). Talk about a bad break!

I remember once being in Louisiana and walking around in a t-shirt and no jacket when it was about 40 degrees. Some of the locals figured I was from Alaska. Nope, just Wisconsin.

I went to school in the cobb county school district, but I lived on the border of cherokee county, so some of my friends were in that school district. Cherokee county is a fairly large county that the northern part extends up into the foothills of the Appalachain mountains. Back then Cherokee county was not that built up, mostly was farms and such. Any time you heard on the radio that there was a chance of snow the next day, Cherokee county schools would already be closed. It ended up a big joke for us.. chance of snow?? close cherokee county schools!

I know that in Upstate NY (Albany) 6+ inches is enough to cause a hassle.

Then again, 10-12", while a nuisance, doesn't shut things down for more than 5 or 6 hours.

It used to be that way when I was a kid. By the time I was in high school, the roads could be bad enough that buses wrecked and school would stay open.

Of course it is the yankees that think they know, drive full speed, and then discover snow down here is actually ice and plow into the person in front of them that causes the problems. That and people driving in 4 wheel drive vehicles who believe that means they can drive even faster.

Yeah, it's a bit unfair to say yanks are good. I thought I was pretty good until I spun out and ended up in the ditch last winter during freezing rain. Snow I can handle but as somebody said earlier it's that darn freezing rain that really puts you in the ditch. Luckily there weren't any trees in the way.

Of course. I had to wait out a bad storm last year up by Minneapolis and I headed home the next day on I-94 and was sure glad I waited by the amount of vehicles in the ditch. Not that I'm fearful of my own driving (my own ditch experience I don't think anybody should've been on the roads as I was only going about 30 mph and spun out) but I don't trust other drivers in crappy weather.

Heck, I just realized that I said "the ATL" in the thread title. That one is very, very common. Any time we go on a trip with both of our high schools and we're meeting up with a bunch of other groups (which is the way we normally do things), I probably hear my kids yell out "A-T-L" at least a half dozen times at every large-group meeting--much more if one of our kids gets called up front to participate in a game or skit.

I've been driving over 20 years, and can only recall driving when there was significant (as in more than just a dusting of less than a half inch) snow on the road twice. {shrug}
and I'll tell you more, while living in Pittsfield, MA, it struck me as kind of odd how many people didn't even have winter tires on. Yeah, the weather was not as rough as in Quebec, but still, you'd see snowfall of 8-10 inches every once in a while. But then, you'd see a pickup truck opening our little street once in the day as opposed to the big snowplow I see coming around here a couple times in the evening ;)

I was expecting to read something more like "Plus - my knee is killing me!!!!!" ;)

It is hurting today, but I am so used to it by now that I don't notice it unless it's excruciating. My foot/heel is hurting much worse than normal though...spasming alot today. I am sure the cold damp weather has something to do with it.

Stupid winter!
