Okay, here’s how it works.
1. Each FOFC member begins with 100 points. A balance will be kept thereafter in this thread’s second post. When you are out of points, you are done, but there is no maximum balance.
2. Numbers for the game will be posted by myself in this thread. My goal is to post 10 numbers per month, and then (depending on the game’s success and interest level) continue this every month through 2003. I will try to separate number postings by at least 48 hours to allow for greater participation.
3. To qualify for the monthly standings, you must play at least five of the numbers. This also earns all qualifiers a 10-point bonus (and adds new life to the zero-balance losers). To qualify for the Annual Number Cruncher Award, you must have qualified in at least five months.
4. The numbers will fall between 10 and 90, and will be randomly generated by percentage dice.
5. You are betting points on whether I will roll less than or equal to the posted number. For example, if I post 79 as the number, there’s a 79% chance of success.
6. You may bet as much or as little of your current balance as you wish. You may edit your betting posts until I post a “betting window closed” message for that number, at which point all bets are locked.
7. Lesser numbers have better pay-off odds. I will post the odds with the numbers, but the formula will simply be dividing 100 by the number and dropping any remainder. Examples: #34-50 pays 2-1, #26-33 (3-1), #21-25 (4-1), #17-20 (5-1), #15-16 (6-1), #13-14 (7-1), #12 (8-1), #11 (9-1), #10 (10-1). Anything above 50 pays 1-1.
To clarify, this means that if you bet 10 points on a 2-1 number, your balance will go down 10 if the number misses, and up 20 if it hits. I think I mispoke about this further down the thread, so please disregard that and feel free to edit your bets. I apologize for the confusion - I am not an experienced betting guy.
