Breaking news: Apple announces new 1 GB iPod nano

Apple has announced a new one gigabyte version of the iPod nano for $149. Aside from the capacity, the new nano appears to be identical to the existing 2 GB and 4 GB versions of the nano.

Take everything you love about iPod and shrink it. Now shrink it again. With 1GB (240 songs), 2GB (500 songs) and 4GB (1,000 songs) models starting at $149, the pencil-thin iPod nano packs the entire iPod experience into an impossibly small design. So small, it will take your music places you never dreamed of.

you know you could probably get one with like 512mb/1gb. it might be a tad bit unweildy (it might need to be electronic to hide that). But put a little USB 512/1gb stick in it and hook it up to a bluetooth transmitter, with i guess a chip to control the transferring protocall, and BOOM.

I do that all of the time (not the 8-track part, asshole :p ) but don't convert to mp3 and keep the files on my hard drive in the .wav format. Sounds like too much extra work just to have portability.

I do that all of the time (not the 8-track part, asshole :p ) but don't convert to mp3 and keep the files on my hard drive in the .wav format. Sounds like too much extra work just to have portability. Well, it's a matter of the return on your investment. My commute runs 1.30-2 hours each way every day. That's a lot of idle time, and I'm a music maniac.

When I built my new computer (the one that I now use), the first thing I did was set it up right next to my old computer. For hours each night I would just rip CD after CD while doing stuff on the other computer. iTunes has a very handy setting that will allow the program to automatically convert any CD insterted to MP3, then eject the disc when done. So i pop in a CD, go back to what I'm doing, and only turn my attention back to the "ripping computer" when i hear the CD eject. I own roughly 1,200 CDs, so it did take a while to get everything on there. Even now, about a year later, i'll still find CDs around that didn't make it on. Getting my library in there was the hard part, keeping it updated is really easy.

It's now to the point where my home stereo sits in the other room collecting dust. With the cheap prices of a good sound card and a 5.1 setup, I see no reason not to do most my listening on the PC.

And as far as the portability, I can say without hesitation that my mp3 player (creative labs, not an ipod) is the single best purchase I have ever made. If my mp3 player broke right now, I'd be buying a new one first thing tomorrow.

There's nothing like being able to pull up anything you've ever owned immediately when it comes to mind, or compare two songs when you have one of those "hey, that sounds like X" moments.

Also, I've gone from the type who had to have a physical copy of an album to not caring at all. I purchase a fair amount of music online, with emusic.com being a big one for me. They carry a pretty solid roster of independent labels that appeal to my tastes. It's been good for new releases and filling holes in my catalog. Way, way, way cheaper than iTunes as well (who i think i've bought maybe 2 songs from).

Space is my issue now. I literally ran out of room about 2 weeks ago, and have since realized I had about 5 gigs of material i could do without ever hearing again in my life, so it's gone. But it's not a long-term solution, as I think I've got about a year before I probably run out of space permanently.

Of late I have been listening to "books on tape" on my ipod and it's been great. I have an i-trip, but can't get the thing to work worth a damn. While driving from DC to Detroit, I just had the ipod in my pocket and one ear of the head phones in. I take it to the gym and listen to books while exercising. It's excellent. No need to worry about having the right tape/CD, just download it and it's there for your enjoyment.

I'm currently listening to "Ender's Game." It's a great reading.

OK, I understand wanting mp3's on 1 player without having to change disks, but are we really so lazy we need something that small to be able to sneak it in places we aren't supposed to have it?

Seriously, I remember those big cassette tape/portable radio player thingys we had back in the day. During the NCAA tournament I would put that in my pocket and run the headphones up my shirt that way I could listen to my basketball when I was in middle school and high school. What is this country coming to? :D

You should check out audible.com. I had a subsricption and forgot about it for a while so I let my credits stack up.. I had like 15 credits and have been looking for good books to read. Enders Game is great and I believe its long and unabridged, a good choice for your money.. I am about to start the Steven King book about the Sox magical 04 season. 15hrs of Sox love, I can't wait..

I had a small portable tv that I would put in my backpack and standup near the foot of my desk. I would turn it to the teacher and unzip the front and leave the volume off so I could watch the games on black and white.

2006 - I can stream my cable TV through my EVDO connection on my phone and watch on my 240-320pixel screen. I pump the volume through my small Plantronics Bluetooth headset so nobody even knows I am listening. I can also get XM radio and stream any connection that Windows Media Player can play. Technology RULES..

You can, but quite frankly you are a goof if you spend $35-50 on an audiobook via iTunes rather than spending $20/month for two at audible.com.

Especially since, y'know, Audible *provides* the audio content that iTunes is selling for full price. It's the same thing, only you aren't getting the discount.

Unabridged means the complete book, not edited to fit a certain timeframe.

On my ipod. It works out great. And yes, unabridged means that the ENTIRE book is included. IMO, that's the only way to go.

ABRIDGED means that someone has edited the book down to make it shorter in length so that it takes less time to listen to. It is never the author who does this, and you often lose some of the "color" of the novel.

Just to give you an idea, the current Dark Tower book I'm listening to is quite lengthy - approximately 27 hours long.

What better Nano or Shuffle?

Peregrine
09-13-2006, 02:37 AM
Well it really depends on what you need/want. The Shuffle is a very small (the new version, just announced, is actually crazy small) and very cheap player that doesn't have a click wheel, just basic controls, but can be very nice if you just want something small for workouts or whatever and just want to preload it with songs before you go.

http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/

The Nano has more storage, with a clickwheel, but not a huge amount of storage, so it's better if you want to be able to control your songs on the go but don't want to carry around one of the larger iPods.

I don't have any sort of MP3 player yet, but I think they should have a system where you can rank songs from 1 to 10 on how often you'd like them to be played in shuffle mode. Some songs I like, but don't want to hear except for once in a while.

I agree. Media player lets you rank songs from 1 to 5, but it doesn't work very well, and it's PC only. You can rank songs, albums, and artists from 1 to 100 on launch.com, but the amount of songs they have is limited.

You can do this with iPod/iTunes using smart playlists, but you have to set it up yourself and its not intuitive at all.

I got one of these as a gift from my brother recently. I don't feel right selling it or giving it away, but I just don't need a portable music player. It has been almost 2 weeks and I haven't bothered to take off the shrink wrap. I guess if I went to the trouble of putting stuff on it, I *might* use it once or twice a year.
