Here's the summary from the article:
*Paul Savage and his Brigham Young University research team have invented CSA-54, a chemical compound that holds the promise of killing the HIV virus.
*CSA-54 is one of a family of compounds called Ceragenins that mimic the disease-fighting characteristics of a healthy human immune system.
*Tests at Vanderbilt University indicate the BYU compound also could be effective against influenza, small pox and herpes.
*Assuming continued positive results, CSA-54 could be available in three to seven years.
If true, this would definitely be amazing and the researcher & BYU are going to be very wealthy.

Bullshit, I don't believe it. Nothing good has ever come out of BYU... ;)

I hate to get all hyped up about this (especially with the scam regarding stem cells and Korea still fresh in the headlines), but conquering diseases like this article proclaims has got to be within our technological grasp.
What can I say? At heart I'm an optimist. :)

Can't believe my JeeberD BYU bashing radar did not go off earlier........I would offer you a crisp cold mug of Fuck off juice, but the Damn University of Utah fans drank it all :D
BTW, what is the word on Price, I thought after turning UTEP around he would be looking to parlay his success into a BCS job, but he seems happy there.

Would a cure for AIDS cause the world to go through a sexual revolution?
Richer than Bill Gates for sure if the cure was true. We can only hope. One can only wonder if Cancer will ever be 'cured'.

That language isn't very BYU-ish, is it?

As long as the brake (?) medicine generate money, there's no reason for the drugcompanies to release a cure.. I mean come on.. get with the program ;)

I think (just opinion) that we'll see better and better "cancer fighters" in our life time, but cancer has to many forms and causes ever to be completely eradicated. Like heart disease, we may see the death rates lower (or at least the average death age go higher) but never be completely removed.

I agree with this, although it seems to me people are dying younger nowdays.

The accuary tables disagree with you. It is the fact that deaths of younger people always stands out in our minds that makes it seem so.

All is fair in love and rivalry smack.....................besides I don't live in Utah so it falls under the doesn't count in another zip code rule anyway, you would be amazed at the un-BYU-ish things I get away with ;)
Seriously the prelimary information on this is very promising....If it pans out we only have to hope they are not tied up in red tape with the FDA for an excessive amount of time.

Agree, the coverage that the deaths of young athletes get now is just so much more ingrained in our minds with Cable and the internet ......I remember as Kid watching the game where the Lions WR Chuck Hughes had a heart attack on the field and died....a definite tragedy and disturbing as well, but I don't really remember anything on the news or even much in the way of follow-up. Can you imagine that happening today?
Add to this the potential fact that athletes now are more at risk then they were before, with all the supplements, performance enhancing drugs, excess lifestyles etc that they as a group may be dying young at a greater pace then before. It would be interesting to look at numbers for this demographic. One area for sure that is disturbing is pro Wrestling......It really almost isn't a shock anymore when a wrestler dies in his 30's of 40's.

Damn those Utah fans! :D
Yeah, Coach Price has stated many times over the past couple of years that he's very happy in El Paso and doesn't see himself going anywhere any time soon. Other schools have offered him more money to leave the Miners, but he's said that he left a place that felt like home for more money once before and it obviously didn't turn out well. Hopefully his SI settlement gave him enough cash that he won't ever need a huge salary from another school...the only way I see him leaving is if he gets the Miners so good that we're in a BCS Bowl or two he might leave for another challenge. What I really see happening, though, is CMP staying in El Paso for another three or four years and then retiring and turning the keys to the program over to one of his sons. Hopefully that's what happens...

True, media covers sports deaths bigtime.

I hope that this works, I truly do. As someone who has a debilitating and eventually lethal disease myself, I can only feel compassion for others and hope that this generation will be the last generation so afflicted.

There is a vaccine for HPV and as a result, lower the chance for cervical cancer, but it's being opposed by certain fundamentalists because "Giving the HPV vaccine to young women could be potentially harmful, because they may see it as a licence to engage in premarital sex," because God forbid women have sex without consequences.
