In all seriousness, this is an intriguing hire. The wheels really fell off the wagon in St. Louis. It will be interesting to see if he can recreate what he did in St. Louis. Obviously Vermeil put together an amazing offense in Kansas City, but I still think that is the system and it has nothing to do with Vermeil. I just don't know why the system fell apart in St. Louis. Was it Martz or was it the talent?

To be fair, Roy Williams is NOT overrated at all - He's going to be a Pro Bowler gauranteed. Also, Kevin Jones had a great rookie season, but was injured a lot this season and Mooch never gave him more than 15 or so rushes a game.

I'm worried about his motivation. It seems like he was using the whole thing as leverage. For what, I'm not sure, but I think it remains to be seen how well this works out. I hope it turns out well, but I have no idea.

They were 5-2 and up like 28-7 over indy at half when he went down if im not mistaken(very possible i am on the record, but i know we were tearing into indy)...before injury i was thinking nice play-off run...afterwards we feel apart...

No, they were like 3-5 at that point, they weren't in the playoff hunt after maybe the 5th game of the year.

What happened to St. Louis is that their line has fallen apart. The age caught up to the line, and part of being a lineman is attitude. The Rams have gotten so far away from the running game, that the linemen ceased to have that flatten the other guy attitude. The result is a bunch of guys there that can't open holes for the running game, which means the defense can drop 6 or 7 guys into coverage every down. That closes off the passing game.

Actually they were still top 10 in offense last year, so they weren't that bad, but they couldn't put the ball in the end zone, and their defense made things look a lot worse. That is the other half of the equation, if your defense can't get the ball back for your offense, it puts the break on the offense. The underrated part of both the 99 and 01 teams were the defenses which were top 10 in both years.

Just checked, they were 2-3 going into the indy game the lost bulger...2-3 isnt great, but that early in the season its far from out of the playoff hunt...either way

I guess we'll see if the show was due to Vermeil or Martz. :)I'll admit Martz had the offensive schemes, but Vermeil made us Champions! There is no doubt in my mind we might have had a run if Martz would have kept his happy ass in the booth where he belongs.

I agree 100% with this.

I think Charles Rogers COULD have a very good year. He is the lean, speedy WR that can cut and run slants that the Martz/Vermeil offense has shown to perform well. Marcus Pollard should be utilized well near the goal line.

Im very happy with the hire, much more so than Henderson at D Cord.

I am not sure how to view the Henderson hire because of Rod Marinelli. How much is he going to be involved in the defense? I get the impression he is in the mold of Monte Kiffin (sp?)

Seems to me that a very aggressive D Cord plus a more conservative Head Coach doesnt work out.

Same thing on O, a Heach Coach who favors running out the clock and an occasional bomb, vs an OC who favors speed recievers, slants and WR's who can get YAC.

It is my understanding that Martz is pretty egotistical. How is he going to get along with a boss that has never been an NFL head coach? It seems like things may work at first, but eventually there will be some friction, especially if Martz and Marinelli butt heads philosophy-wise. Also, as mentioned, Martz is most likely still interested in being a head coach so either he jumps ship after a few years, or makes a push to replace Marinelli when he gets fired. Either way, Detriot loses.

So, short term, good. Long term, bad.

The on again off again nature of the whole hiring is certainly irksome, but given what was available if Martz hadn't taken the job, I'm happy with it. Hopefully he can keep the nonsense down to a minimum and worry about coaching. Even if he's not here long term, hopefully he can put a system in place that works and gives the players some sense of structure and confidence.

Roy Williams isn't overrated. He is highly injury prone and drops the occassionaly easy pass, but he is capable of the extraordinary. Williams was only a rookie and hadn't played football in over a year. His attitude is of some concern. Rogers... not panning out so well. Kevin Jones has promise.
