My wife wants to start taking an MP3 player with her to the gym... she is trying to lose 100 pounds, and is 15 pounds on her way to it after only 6 weeks. So, as a goal, she wants to get an MP3 player once she loses 50 pounds to give her sort of a reward for achieving that goal.

Anyway, she's clumsy. So am I for that matter, and I've heard the horror stories about iPods and other players pretty much ceasing to work after you give them one good drop on a hard surface. I have also heard that flash players do not have as big of a problem with drops as regular MP3 players.

Does anyone have any experience with a Flash MP3 player? Pros/cons vs. a regular iPod type of MP3 player? Or any recommendations generally on MP3 players aside from that? Are iPods really that special compared to an off brand type? Am I being a bit irrational in thinking that one good sharp hit will render an iPod inoperable?

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I use a Shuffle to work out -- it's small enough it doesn't seem to get in the way. You can buy little clips for it so it just attaches to your shorts or what have you...

I have the smaller one ($99 for 512MB), but that's more than enough music to work out with.

If you prefer an iPod but for stability issues, you might consider buying from Costco -- they have a great return policy, and they are currently selling iPods.

But note: only the IPOD shuffle and Nano (I believe) are Flash players. The regular IPODs are hard drive players, and tend not to operate too well if you're excercising, jogging, etc..

Yeah, she would probably be doing a lot of walking/jogging. I didn't realize that any of the iPods were Flash players. I guess that shows you how far along I am into research so far.

The ipod nano has gotten very good reviews and has a lot of room for a flash player.

I have the 1 GB version of this mp3 player and I would recommend it:

It is very small and extremely lightweight. The clip is very tight and is much more comfortable than the Ipod wristband system in my opinion. I used it all summer last year for jogging and use it 4-5 hours a day at work and I have never once had a problem with it. My only complaint is the battery life - probably only about 10-11 hours and recharges with a USB cord.
