Hopefully a real head coaching position will be available to him after next season.

Crap. Saw it coming though. I think Shoop is more of a candidate than Shell.

with the exception of pittsburgh there are no real head coaching jobs in the nfl- only head asst coach in charge of the onfield team.
i did just get some inside info on the raiders coaching mess. no matter how bad you would think dealing with al davis is- it is worse. this comes from a source that has actually coached there. it is obvious that the word has gotten around the nfl. i can easily understand bobby petrino not being interested because the day of successful head college coaches going to the nfl is simply not going to happen very often. but when pro coach after pro coach turns down a head job you know there is something really wrong.
the average stay of a nfl head coach is probably around 3yrs. so coaches going in know there is a good chance they won't be around very long but still jobs get filled. so when the raiders are scrambling around to find a coach it seems that candidates aren't necessarily worried about getting fired but rather about conditions that exist while they are actually in the job.

I'm just glad he has been so successful. When I was a kid, he was my favorite player at Georgia Tech. He played just about every offensive position for at least a down or two.

He's my new hero. It's cool to see somebody NOT jump into a coaching job just because it's a HEAD coaching job. The old saying, "It's better to serve in Heaven than to reign in Hell" seems fairly appropriate in this situation.
