Looks like you soon will be able to forego the Google Talk ap and use the Gmail web interface to do chatting

(ok, I admit it, I didn't find this. tk passed it along to me because I haven't used Gmail's great web interface for a while since I have it pop3 into Eudora)

I read about this last night and was kind of ticked off that the rollout hadn't reached me yet. It finally did late this afternoon, and I gotta say, it's pretty cool.

Radii and I used this a little yesterday, it's a decent chat - we have trillian installed on both our computers so we probably won't use it much, but it's nice to know it's there...

just tested it and it works quite nicely, well done Google! (just like with about everything else you do :))

Hmmm looking at the time of FM's message, he was trying it out with me. ;)

Nifty little feature, though I wonder if IT at work will stop us from using Gmail because of it (or, accessing Gmail at work).

I don't know if it was purely coincidence, or just good timing, but after moping for most of yesterday about not having it, I started talking to Ryan on the Google Talk client itself, asking if he'd gotten the rollout yet. It was the first time I'd actually used the client in some time. Not 10 minutes after our conversation, there it was.

Also -- and I don't know why or if this happening across the board -- but even now, it doesn't show up for me if I'm using a secure connection (https://) to access Gmail. My Firefox Gmail Notifier button defaulted to the secure site, but if I take out the "s", it shows up fine. There's an option in the extension preferences to turn the secure connection on or off.

Ok, I'll go chat on Google Talk for a while and maybe that'll work.

Here's more discussion on the HTTP vs HTTPS issue. Make sure you check that too.
