View Full Version : What's love got to do with it?

So this thread is basically for the guys who are HUGE sports fan. I have a story to back this question up, but I dont know if I want it to be revealed yet, so here is the question.
If you had to choose between your woman (or man) and between something you really loved, lets say your favorite sports team or favorite college sports program, who would you choose?
Okay, what the hell, I'll tell the story.
I am from Houston, Texas, and my boyfriend of 3 years (GE) is from Memphis. When we graduate from college in May I told him that I would attend the University of Memphis until I obtain my Masters degree, and then I wanted to move to Texas, or to where ever I was being offered the most money. He basically refused and said that he could never leave Memphis because of his love for University of Memphis athletics. He was raised watching them play, and couldn't live being outside of that raggedy little town. So that is my basic question, would any of you guys choose a school or sports team over your woman? Or is he alone? Or am I just silly? Thanks for the serious answers in advance. ;)

If he would choose a sports team over you then you aren't really that important to him and should move on to someone who wouldn't.
Also, here's a free apostrophe to insert into your thread title to make it correct: '

In addition to my previous statement, I would modify it thusly: if said boyfriend is actually suiting up for one of the local teams he's mentioned, then it's more understandable. Otherwise, I'd remind him that through the magic of television, he can still follow his favorite local teams. Once they get good enough to matter, that is.*
* Another reason why an unhealthy attachment to any Memphis team is pure insanity, especially when nookie is on the line.

Seriously, when Mrs. Eaglesfan and I started dating she made it clear that she wanted to move back to Louisiana. I knew that I wouldn't be getting as many Eagles' and Trojan's games as I wanted on TV. However, I follow them on TV when I can and on the internet when I can't. Also, once we have our house, we'll get Direct TV for the NFL Sunday Pass and I'll be ordering any USC games on PPV. There is no way, I'd let my love of sports, dictate where we live. However, now that we are facing some real economic problems due to Post-Katrina, I do want her to seriously consider moving from Louisiana or at least New Orleans. It's caused some friction, but she is willing to compromise. I think that compromise is the key to any good relationship.

Based on what LSG said, I have to say I agree with her. BUT like GE said, there are 2 sides to any story. It's possible he is saying "I am not going to follow you around the country so you can land a great job - it needs to be someplace I'll be happy also". But since we don't know that, it's hard to give an answer to the original question.

So maybe this is a tad too serious of an answer, for as light a thread as it has been so far, but at some point I just get tired of the "ooh, how taboo to talk about something like this (especially right before the world's largest fabricated holiday)". I know a lot of people are silly and flippant about it and not at all serious so this isn't that direction but I know there are also a lot of people actually believe this.
I have a wife who, if she asked questions like "if I or your computer are hanging off a cliff, which one do you save" knows that the response will be "Can I get the monitor, mouse, keyboard, and printer, too?" And you know what, it's not because I'm some cold, heartless monster that hates her or takes her for granted or loves my computer, sports teams, or whatever more than her.
I'm sorry, but any time someone goes to the "am I more important or is X", they're missing the boat entirely and just trying to be a manipulative bitch/bastard (equal opportunity as both genders do it). If you guys can't reach some sort of agreement or compromise or talk about it to the point where there's ultimatums flying, there's something bigger wrong than "you like your sports team a little too much".
And for some reason, it's really taboo to say this. It results in guys sleeping on couches or being in the doghouse or not getting any or "being due some revenge" or whatever. This post will be viewed as "ooh, I can't believe someone said that" or dismissed as much too serious in a casual thread (carry on- I don't mean to get in the way of that and if this is a parody thread, wow, I stepped in it big time but it's what I'm good at :)). But, if no one else was going to say "If you're making someone choose between X and you, you're the one screwing up more, not him (and not to say he's not screwing up things also)", it has to be said.
This particular one isn't quite in that vein. Well, actually it is because you asked "would any of you guys choose a school or sports team over your woman?" which, in this case, is basically saying that you love money more than him, using that same logic applied above. But let's not play fair and just throw this little (GIANT) detail out the window.
But, let's throw that aside and say this one is about a different argument. You could always kindly inform him, as has been suggested previously in the thread, of ESPN's delightful packages he could buy with more money and NCAA tournament trips, bowl trips, and tickets and how you would love to let him- ok, so maybe that's pouring it on a tad too sugary sweet. But you get the idea.
Tho, of course, from what I've seen with others- money isn't everything in a job- there's job satisfaction, challenge, location (ding), and more and if you don't get those but a lot of money, it's still not worth it.
Finally, to use a counterexample, I didn't see a bunch of people jump on EF's wife for saying she loved New Orleans and wanted to stay. Yes, there were people frustrated with that and it's fairly obvious that the better job situation for him is to go elsewhere. But I didn't see a single post saying she's some awful person for wanting to stay where she lives- but a lot of posts talking about either making the best of a bad situation or trying to convince her that it was better for both of them.
This is obviously something that's going to require both of you to be on the same page and situations like this are going to be tough for both to reconcile. This is one of those decisions, that if you're both serious, the question isn't "Which do you choose, me or X?", it needs to be "what is the most good for both of you?"

SI - I totally agree with everything you just said, I know with every ounce of my being that radii would choose me/Anthony over anything else...but sometimes I kid around with him and ask the questions like your wife does.
From what I could tell, her original post was not a truly serious "He has to make a choice" kind of thing, it was more like a "I want to know what you guys would do in this situation"...like I said in a previous post, I make it a rule to never post personal issue between radii and I here, but GE doesn't seem upset that she did and he seemed to be OK with everything...I don't think she was actually saying to him "Choose me or Memphis" (although that is what the original post sounded like).

SI - I totally agree with everything you just said, I know with every ounce of my being that radii would choose me/Anthony over anything else...but sometimes I kid around with him and ask the questions like your wife does.
From what I could tell, her original post was not a truly serious "He has to make a choice" kind of thing, it was more like a "I want to know what you guys would do in this situation"...like I said in a previous post, I make it a rule to never post personal issue between radii and I here, but GE doesn't seem upset that she did and he seemed to be OK with everything...I don't think she was actually saying to him "Choose me or Memphis" (although that is what the original post sounded like).Well, and that's why there was some disclaimer in there. I tend to miss some obvious things like that so I wanted to make sure that this was clear. :) However, as I said up there as well, I've run into a lot of people who think this is a completely legit question and wouldn't bat an eye and think it's ok to do that- there's where I was targeting that at.

If you really want to get your man out of Memphis. Make about 20,000-50,000 flyers saying his name and that he's a high-risk child molestor. Pass them out around the town, where he works, and everywhere else....leave a bunch of them on the sidewalk of the street you live on.
I mean...where's the ingenuity, people?

How is that relationship advice? I didn't ask for advice for anything, and if i did, it wasn't intentional because I really dont want advice from people who spend the majority of their time on a message board. I just wanted to put this situation out there and see if y'all loved a town or sports team as much as GE does.
Plus, he said that he knew a couple of guys out here would definitly back him up, so it was funny to me that those guys were the ones that in fact agreed with my point of view on the situation.

would any of you guys choose a school or sports team over your woman?
If it was a woman who would choose money over my happiness without a hint of hesitation? Yeah, I'd stick with the Thrashers.
Or the Yellow Jackets. Or the Gladiators. Or a 8-9 y/o Pee Wee Football team that I happen to drive by the field where they play a couple of times a year. Dunno who those kids are but I think I'd prefer their company to someone who was more interested in her own wallet than in anything that was really important to me.
Between the completely selfish bitch attitude displayed in the wording of the original question and the foot+ankle+shin+knee+thigh you put in your mouth when you basically slammed the forum a few pages later, I'm hard pressed to think of anyone who has fucked up their own image on a forum more completely in such a quick fashion as you have in this thread.

First, i've been contributing to this forum for a year now.
Which matters ... how ??? There's assholes who've been here since the original incarnation of FOFC, their longevity doesn't make them less of an asshole. And your year of "contributions" don't make you come across as any less of a bitch at this point.
Second, I never said I would choose money over my man.
In so many words? No, you didn't.
But your word choice, your tone, the whole attitude that came across in your initial post made it pretty clear to me, and I suspect to quite a few others who simply don't want the hassle of saying it straight out.
Honey, you're all about you & that's pretty damned obvious.
Third, I would never go to a thread that you started and bad mouth you, i have more respect for people than that. I guess I shouldn't expect the same.
Respect? For somebody who displayed their selfish nature & now regrets doing so? For somebody who rips on the forum and then tries to cover themselves by whining that they've been posting here for a year themselves? And then try to paint yourself as some sort of victim of an unwarranted attack? Well, I'll be a sonuvabitch ... you really must think we're some incredibly stupid people.
I didn't randomly decide to "bad mouth" you, I didn't drift into the thread thinking "hmm, let's see if there's some innocent victim to slaughter". More like: "I read the thread with my jaw dropping slowly but surely to the floor as you dug a hole for yourself". And, once the incredulous phase passed, I decided if nobody else was going to do it, I'd be the one to call your bullshit for exactly what it has been. Respect you? Bwahahahaha. That's too rich. After the crap you've come up with in this thread, I can't really imagine being able to stand the sight or sound of you, much less have any "respect" for you. Plain & simple, you don't deserve it.

That's got nothing to do with anything. What makes a man (or woman) happy is what this discussion is about. I am lucky to have a partner who would follow me to the ends of the earth, no matter how daffy my dreams got, but as I've told her, it's her turn to dream whenever she wants: When she wants to go somewhere, all she has to do is say so, and we go.

Nah, not really. Just adequately seriously. I'm just answering/commenting honestly. I'm really not particularly upset/bothered/angry/disturbed/whatever by any of this thread (well, hardly anything anyway).
If I gave a particular damn about any of it, there's a better chance there would be ... I dunno ... nuances, subtleties (sp?), angles to be played, etc. Instead, absent any serious amount of giveafuck, I'm just really honest, no b.s., no sugarcoating, just the facts.
(I leave you to imagine what it's like when I'm really disturbed by something.)

I love how everyone seems to think that Jon is taking this entirely too seriously. I'm pretty sure this is about on the same level of seriousness as checking the Thrashers score to see if they won tonight. But it sure is one hell of a fun way to vent stress at someone who asked for it.

Seriously though, if things were reversed - say, if Flasch to choose a member at random posted thatr he was offered a well-paying job and he posted on here saying his SO wanted to stay in J'ville because she loved the town so much, half of the posters on here would be saying in so many words, "dump the bitch."Yeah, but, like I said earlier, this is a lot like the EF thread about New Orleans and no one is saying "dump the bitch"

However, I think there are huge differences (from what little I know from LSG's post) that don't even make the 2 circumstances comparable. If anything, Mrs. Eaglesfan would be playing the part of GE, and even that is a big stretch.

I am staying out of the relationship stuff in this thread, but I have to defend myself here a bit. I am not going out on a whim and dropping everything to play poker. Just now read the thread....
You were being a total passive agressive asshole by posting this in the first place. I believe that you were banking on the well-known tendency on FOFC (and internet forums in general) for so many to fall all over themselves with flattery any time a *gasp* girl posts anything. When you didn't get the feedback that you counted on, you upped the ante a bit ("I give great head," "I don't wear panties," "Please, please, give me some validation and make my boyfriend look stupid.") but, to both of our surprise, that movement was overshadowed by some very insightful resistance. Props to JMGa for what has to be the first argument he's ever made that I agree with.

Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
There's nothing you can do that can't be done.
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung.
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game
It's easy.
There's nothing you can make that can't be made.
No one you can save that can't be saved.
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be in time
It's easy.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
There's nothing you can know that isn't known.
Nothing you can see that isn't shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be.
It's easy.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
All you need is love (all together now)
All you need is love (everybody)
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.

I think some of you are not understanding what LSG is saying. In fact, some are going way too far in their acquisitions. I do not see how you can pass judgment on a message board without ever meeting a person. When you read something, it does not come across as clear as it does if you were talking to them. Some of you attack relentlessly without knowing the full story.
It has become pretty clear in this thread that some do spend too much time on a message board. Go out and meet people. Do not spend all day thinking of three paragraph posts about some girl you have never met when you could be out enjoying life instead. Seriously, this thread started out as a joke. Sure, LSG wanted to see some responses. She is not the money-grubbing bitch that some of you making her out to be. If the only way you pass judgment on people is by seeing what they post on a message board, then something is seriously fucked up with you. I mean that in a good way. Go get some freaking help.

It is funny you say that. I never let Internet message boards get to me. I read what JIMG wrote, but it did not bother me. Anyone who has been around FOFC even a remote period of time knows he is just someone who likes to rant about anything. But enough is enough. It is time to lay off her. I think people are trying to run over because they are so frustrated with their own lives that they have to vent on a message board to feel better. It is really a sad life and I am glad I do not live it.
If it was I posting this, it would be an entirely different attitude. Some of you think you are f’ing elitists, but you are really not. You try to run over someone, just because they do not contribute to the community as much as you have. Say what you want HA, but he is not nearly as big as an asshole as some of you are.

By the way, she never said she was going to choose money over me. She has never really been concerned about money. We are college kids, we are hungry for money. We are almost done, so we can taste it. When she said she wanted to follow the money, she meant that she wanted to go together where we could get the best paying jobs. I disagree with her on that and is what started this whole discussion and prompted her to post on this message board. She is not the best explainer of things, but it does not mean you can jump her throat for it.

I don't think anybody's trying to "run over" your girl here. I think they're responding to a person who made some irrational statements, tried to backtrack away from them, and then tried to play it off like she was just funnin'.

Izulde's post is just JiMGA's but with swearing and without some of the "prose" now that it's "ok" to go after her.
And now we've started to get multiple posts of "doesn't this mean you just care about money" which was stated way back on page one or at least page two?
Then more "lighten up, Francis"-esque posts.
And now it's just rinse, wash, repeat...

I understand you feel an obligation to stand up for her, but you're veering into FranklinNoble territory.
Sweet, this thread wouldn't have been complete without someone mentioning "capsicum". There, I've done it...

(cough) Bullshit (cough)
So now we get the "oh we were just kidding" line? Uh huh, we sure do believe you. I guess we were all supposed to drive to Texas to meet your f'd up girlfriend before we passed judgement on her?
She started the thread fucknut. She invited this all on herself. Feel free to break out the "since she's my girlfriend only I can mock her" line since this is obviously where you're going with it...

Go out and meet people.
I'd suggest you follow your own advice ... start with finding a more likable piece of ass. Trust me, they aren't all this bad.
Go get some freaking help.
And just to return your concern, here's a little help for you.

(Sorry, just wanted to be a part of this thread, and this was the only semi-relevant thing I could think of.)
