I really think most of these people don't intend to sell a sob story, but it's what the producers pick up on to make a show out of a competition. I assume you're talking about Kelly Pickler.

Interestingly, I think several of the other girls have the opposite problem - they might lose votes because they have so much going for them. One chick is related to a professional singer from the 60s/70s (Paris); one is 16 and already been a contestant on Star Search and is pretty much all-world for being only 16 (Lisa); one is the daughter of a Mass. state senator and has a full basketball scholarship to BC (Ayla); and one has a mother who is a voice coach (Katherine).

I think Mandisa (the big girl) has the potential to be with the other 3. However, the 4 of them are my top 4 girls right now as far as singing talent.

I'm just always shocked at how good the contestants sound until they get to this level. There were 4 girls who I would say were "good" and have a chance to improve until at the end they may be great. The rest of the group were horrible. We could cut this competetion down considerably by just taking those 4 girls and the top 4 guys and just go from there. It'll save my ears anyway.
