Which group of guys would you consider the nerdiest? D&D guys? Star Trek conventioneers? Text-sim players?

Hard to say, since there are probably a lot of people who could fall into all three categories...or at least two of the three.

So naive... So, so naive... The levels of Nerd/Geek run deep and are complex. Therefore, I shall present you the Geek Hierachy Chart. It will show levels of geekdom that many of you probably never knew (and could live a long, happy life without ever knowing) existed.

To answer the original question, according to The Chart the answer would be:
D&D (Role Players) and Strek Trek Nerds (Trekkies) are equally nerdy and both are more nerdy than text-sim players (video gamers).

Just off the top of my head, I would say around the "Fanfic Writer" level and then you bump it down a notch for those who did photoshop work for the thread, wrote a song for the thread, or wrote a poem (limerick, haiku, or other) for the thread.

The D&D players I know are kinda creepy and nerdy... but I know at least 3 other personal friends who play FM 2006 regularly, and I wouldn't consider them high on the nerd scale at all. So I'm going to go with the stereotypical answer of Trekkies. The real fanatics of that show send off that perma-nerd vibe that you just can't fake.

why isn't this a poll
Becuase we have a defenitive chart. The poll would be useless and incorrect. It would be like having a poll and asking which of these numbers: 1, 2, 3, or 4, has the lowest numeric value. Sure, someone could vote for "4", but they would be wrong and look silly. We have enough of that around here without extraneous polls.

I recall the documentary Trekkies, where they featured a woman who wore her Star Trek costume all the time, even when she reported to jury duty. That's messed up.

They are people who like to dress up as animals by wearing life-sized animal suits. Then they typically (I think) like to have sex while wearing these animal suits. I think that's the big draw for most. I saw it on en episode of CSI once.
They have conventions and everything. They are big into anthropormorphic animal art/comics/cartoons as well.

my wife used to be a bit of a Trekkie - I remember her wearing a Federation pin at work, and one time before we started dating she dressed as Data to attend one of the movies.
that's nothing compared to some of the D&D people I've run into over the years. wow, talk about scary. you know, guys who swing a pretend sword at the table when attacking, and having sound effects to correspond to whether they hit or not.
love playing D&D. hate 90% of D&D players.

I couldn't agree more. They are, for the large part, an annoying people. Though if you think bringing a fake sword to a table top game or making sound effects are bad, you should see some of the LARPers (eg The "lightning bolt, lightning bolt" crowd), yeesh!

Not according to how I interpret the chart. The higher up on the hierachy the less "geeky" you are (or the "cooler" you are). That's based on a simple observation of the difference between, role players and, say, live action role players.

Right, which means that RPG and Trekkies fall one level below video gamers. Although my willingness to argue this point probably drops me a notch.

Geek definitely has more stature than nerd. Geek usually infers knowledge/expertise in some area such as technology (Best Buy's Geek Squad, Beat the Geeks TV show) while nerd usually just means 'socially awkward' or 'misfit.'
Until fairly recently, video and computer game players were also regulated to the 'nerd' category, although if you were a designer you may have been a 'geek.' That all changed when it was discoverd that gamers spend more billions on games now than audiences do on movies. Pro athletes play Madden in the clubhouses. Madden himself probably still wouldn't know a game control from an elevator button, but profited hugely from being smart enought to say 'yes' when asked it they could use his name. Still, some stigma still 'lingers' from the past as someone (some baseball manager, can't remember who) refered to video games as 'nintendo' a tell-tale nerd 'buzzword' from the old days.
I actually attended a Star Trek convention in Tulsa, OK during the 80s (I was working it, though feel free to believe otherwise) in which Jimmy Doohan and George Taeki appeared. Doohan seemed kind of 'standoffish' but that was were I learned he was a 'real-life hero' having served in the RCAF during ww2 and spent time in a German prison camp. Taeki was much more approachable, wandering the floor with his arms draped over young pretty things in costumes talking very low and close to them. I thought he was blatantly setting up after-convention recreation for himself. How wrong I turned out to be!
I have never in my life played dungeon and dragons, though I was a pretty-mean Axis and Allies player and am now introducing my son to the game. The 3rd Armor Division in Germany (Spearhead, Elvis's own) spent alot of off-duty and guard-duty time honing their skills on the game when I was there in the mid-80s.
And I do proudly drink my morning coffee out of my Christmas Gift Captain Kirk over-size mug each and every morning. The Captain looks very dashing in his gold dress uniform with medals on the front with the stars and Enterprise behind him! As for the later versions of the show, all I can say is 'No Shatner? No thanks!"
