I'm going to be in Boston next Tuesday, but only for the day. It looks like I'll have about six or seven hours to kill during the day. Anybody know of fun things to do/good places to eat near Tufts University?

Harvard Square is fairly close by there and on the subway route (or you can drive). The rest of Cambridge is also nearby and has a lot of options. Alternatively you could just go to downtown Boston. Easily done with 6-7 hours.

Tufts is in Medford, I believe. There are decent places to eat in the center of town, but I'd think about taking the T into Cambridge or Boston...

Yeah, go down to Harvard Sq - nice place. What kind of things are you into ? Could go down to Jillians, but that's all the way in Kenmore which is a bit of a trek (not if you're driving though). Hell, walking down Newbury St would take a couple of hours. :D

There used to be a good barbecue place in Davis Square (very close to Tufts) called Redbones.

Otherwise, I agree with the Harvard suggestions.

Tufts is fo sho in Medford, not sure if the subway goes out that far. Medford Square is pretty close and has some fun things to do. I do not believe Davis Square is all that close to Tufts, but Redbones definitely rocks (up to an hour wait though some evenings). Jillians is pretty standard chowderhead joint, and definitely don't want that to be your impression of Boston.

The North End is pretty cool (other than the fact that I live there) but there is a lot of historical stuff there. Plus, the USS Constitution is close by in Charlestown (like a $3-4 cab ride). Too little time for the Aquarium, but Quincy Market/Faneuil Hall is also close to the North End (complete with the Holocaust Memorial, which is pretty interesting).

Other than that, like was said, Harvard Square is aight.

I'm still thanking every god i can find that we moved away from that sink-hole. I've lived in more places than i care to count in my life and none, not one of them, ranks as far down on my scale as Boston, and Massachusettes in general.

Right. So his question was what to do while in Boston, not reasons why RendeR doesn't like living there.

The closest T-stop is Davis Square. About a 15 minute walk. Tufts also has shuttles which go there. Redbones (barbeque), The Burren (Irish Pub), and Gargoyles (nice-ish restaurant) are good spots in Davis Square.

But Harvard Square is a much better place to spend time. Just take the T two stops.

If I were you, I would take the T all the way into Boston (it's just a few minutes). Dinner in a tiny North End Italian restaurant is hard to beat. Find one on a side street (not on Hanover St for the real deal).

Lala Rokh (Persian) on Mount Vernon St (Beacon Hill) is a nice out-of-the-way place in a 150+ year old brownstone. Walk around the neighborhood. It is stunning. 75 Chestnut (also Beacon Hill) has a great, if small, bar area for a drink. The Public Garden is nearby (but no flowers yet... too bad it is beautiful in the summer). Oh... Cheers (Bull and Finch) is right there too.

Tourists like Quincy Market. I would consider doing all or part of the Freedom Trail. Newbury St can be interesting.

Cool, thanks for the suggestions. I'm flying into Logan at 9:30, and really don't have to be at Tufts until 5:30 or so. My sister works near Harvard Square, so I'll probably end up there for lunch. Gotta make it by the Twins Enterprise store across from Fenway as well.

BTW, if anyone wants to masquerade as a Tufts student and hear me talk about guns, I'll try to get you more information on what time/where it'll be taking place :)

Well by the time you de-plane and get to Harvard Square from Logan it could be fairly close to lunchtime. I would think that you'd best do Harvard Square area for lunch then, and then take the Red Line back to Park Street, switch to the Green Line and ride down to Kenmore/Fenway so you can hit the Twins Enterprise store (you could do a Fenway Park tour if you're interested...every hour on the hour from 9-4 for $8), take the T back a little ways (depending on time to Hynes/Copley/Arlington...walk part of Newbury Street) and walk through the Public Garden and Boston Common to Park Street where you jump back on the Red Line to head off to Tufts.

Well, I imagine if you're Tom Brady, Boston is a pretty rewarding place to spend time. For us mortals, it's not as much fun.

Well I left Boston because I didn't care for the vibe of the city. But for a short visit, Boston is a very fun city.

it's funny, talking about this with people. everyone that i know that has grown up here says "boston is awesome, i could never leave." everyone that hasn't is like "boston bleh."

it really has a...special kind of charm. it's got this very..."little big city" atmosphere to it. And there are certainly plenty of problems with the city, but that said I still find it hard to contemplate moving away.

I grew up there. Well, Cape Cod, but I had relatives in Boston, spent some summers there. It would have to be a pretty compelling reason to get me to go back.

I was actually born in Lawrence, and spent the first couple of years in Andover. Grandparents lived in Ware (out in western Mass.). One sister lives in Haverhill, another in Tewksbury, and one moved from Andover to Texas about ten years ago. I spent a LOT of time in northern Mass. growing up, and I love Boston.

That being said, it's been five years since I've been there, and I've never had an opportunity to just hang out in the city for a day, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Thanks for the info, DT. That sounds like a pretty good way to spend the day.

I moved here from Pittsburgh. Trust me, I like it.

And yeah, I think you hit it on the head with the last part - the "little big city" is why I genuinely enjoy living here (in Brookline) as opposed to say, New York.

I used to live on the B line (up the hill damnit, its Brookline at that point, not Allston) :D - now on C line, close to Coolidge corner. You're way to far out for me - by my count, there are 5 starbucks within 1 mile of Coolidge Corner. :D

I know the managers and assistants at those stores (the black lady Desi in coolidge corner...Kevin at Harvard Street, Ryan in Washington Square). Fun times.
