View Full Version : Board Upgrade - Report Issues Here
Ryan S

I plan to upgrade the FOFC message board software to the latest version of vBulletin on Saturday Morning (Eastern Time).
The board will be offline while the upgrade is happening. If there are any unforseen problems, I will post details at Skydog's forum and the front page of this site.
Most of the forum styles will be unavailable for a short time until we can reimport them into the new software.
EDIT - http://www.benelou.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard.cgi?;act=SF;f=2 is the address of Skydog's forum

Sweet, now the thread list doesn't jump to the top everytime you go back, it remembers where you were. I can now surf the 1st page 23% faster.

Yes. Hmm.. doesn't seem like it.. I just checked my profile, it was set to Left... so I saved my profile and went to check a thread.. still info still listed at the top. I go into my profile and set it to top just to see if there's a difference.. nope. Even changed it back to Left, still listed at top.. hmmm

So did I. Now I have to reload to see which threads I've checked and haven't been updated (sometimes I will read a thread, hit back, and it will have been replied to again already), to refresh the list, etc. The other way was very convenient.

Top/Left can be set globally in the admin panel, but it applies to everybody. To make it a user-level option requires additional hacking, which has not yet been fully implemented. I think Ryan's planning to work on that.

For any issues with WYSIWYG, QuickReply, or other javascript/ajax-based function, the first order of business should be to do a hard-refresh (ctrl+F5) and clear your cache.
The js and xml files were *heavily* modified between vb3 and vb3.5, and if your computer is picking up any of the old code, it could cause myriad problems.

I have an issue, though I am not sure it's related to the upgrade. I can't stop getting email notifications everytime someone posts in a thread I've posted in. I went to the "CP" controls and turned off the notification, but I keep getting them. They wont stop.
Suggestions?

Check if those threads are showing up in your subscription list. They would be separate from the global notification option.
If not, I'm not sure what the problem is.

They are. Some have "Instant" under the Notification column and some have "None." How do I make the Instant into None? I think that would solve the problem.

Is anyone else having really long page load times? Since the switchover, it usually takes about 30 to 45 seconds for a page to load for me (and then it displays all at once). I am using the Sideline skin, FWIW.

I tried switching skins - that didn't work.
It's very strange. Since the upgrade, I've had consistently slow loading times (and I wouldn't be surprised to find out the pages take the same load time each time). The pages always load (unlike past board problems). And once they appear, they appear all at once.
It really is making the board unworkable for me. I open a page, go read an article on another website, then go to the next page in a thread, read another article, etc. It takes way too much time. Is anyone else having this sort of problem?
Simms
03-17-2006, 01:38 PM
Ideally, all skins other than the default should be disabled until they can be rebuilt post-upgrade.
All the skins are made up of a collection of templates, many of which contain javascript and other code that may or may not be fully compatible with the new version of vB. It's very possible (I'd say even likely) that the "dirty" code now present in the older skins is causing any slowdowns you may be experiencing.
Did you try the default skin specifically? Or just the other alternates?

I switched to default skin (from Sideline) and it acts in the same manner. It seems skin-unrelated.

Well, I'm a government computer, so my cookies are constantly purged and I have absolutely no adware or spyware. I don't have a problem with any other website but this one (and only since the upgrade). It's very strange. As soon as I click on a link, it immediately goes to the proper page, but takes 30-45 seconds to load and then it appears all at once.
I'm wondering if it has something to do with using not-the-most-up-to-date version of IE. It's not totally out of date, but we are usually well behind with upgrades. Unfortunately, I don't have access to upgrading IE or otherwise changing the configuration of it.

I just noticed it tonight (3/21/06, 9 p.m. ET), that when I click on the little button to "go to newest messages" and IF I get one of the click-through interstitial ads, it doesn't show me the newest message, but starts me at the beginning of the thread. The whole bolding thing doesn't work. Threads that should be bold (being new or unread) are sometimes not. Other threads that should not be bold are. At first I thought it was the tabbing, but I was playing earlier without using the tab function and it was still happening. It happens both at work and on my laptop.
