Ice Cube is not ashamed to admit that when it comes to "Welcome Back, Kotter," the 1970s series that helped launch John Travolta's acting career, there "was no bigger fan than me." And Cube is thrilled about his latest role — as the lead in Hollywood's big-screen adaptation of the sitcom classic.

According to Variety, Ice Cube has signed on to both star in and produce "Welcome Back, Kotter," and the rapper's "very excited to be able to put a new twist on it." The rapper/actor — who executive produces the FX reality series "Black. White." — has inked a deal with Dimension Films, the company that will be releasing "Kotter." Production is expected to begin this fall with Tom Brady ("The Hot Chick," "The Animal") in final negotiations to direct and write the script.

Cube will assume the role of a wisecracking teacher who returns to the rough inner-city high school from which he graduated. There he encounters the next generation of unruly, underprivileged troublemakers — who are as apathetic about education as he once was.

In the original series, Mr. Kotter was played by Gabe Kaplan. Travolta played Vinnie Barbarino, a scatterbrained himbo and the unofficial leader of a gang of students nicknamed the "Sweathogs."

Cube will be heading to Vancouver in June to start production on "Are We Done Yet?" the sequel to 2005's "Are We There Yet?" The film remakes the 1948 classic "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House," a Cary Grant comedy about a family that leaves the big city for a fixer-upper in the suburbs only to watch their investment turn from a dream to a nightmare.

So Mr. Kotter is going to be black? Weird.

Wasn't this done to the Honeymooners recently with Cedric the Entertainer? Maybe they should do a Boyz in Hood starring John Heder.

I assume this is going to be similar to the remake of the Honeymooners, which I happened to see on a cross-country flight last year. Even without sound, it looked like a real winner.

The added bonus here is that a guy who has written two Rob Schneider movies will be doing the script.

Good point. Man, I was a big Welcome Back Kotter fan too. Why even bother?

And when minority communities get on their high horse about stereotypes in movies, I hope they look to their own first. Something tells me Ice Cube's classroom won't be filled with white underachievers. Except the token nerdy or anti-social guy, probably.

i wish nothing but failure for this movie, and for the rest of Ice Cube's career. i can't stand him and Ice-T, who i hate even more. i can't stand these crossover gangsta rappers. yeah, i understand they gotta make a living, but when was it established these jackasses could act?

for the record, i haven't ever seen an episode of this Kotter show. saw a clip or two, but they all looked retarded.

My only question is why they are making a Welcome Back Kotter movie in the first place. Is this a show that needs to be turned into a movie? I think I would rather see Knight Rider, Airwolf, A-Team, Hill Street Blues or Columbo made into a movie before that show.

All those shows will be made into movies at some point, not too far off I am sure. Hollywood doesn't exactly shy away from remakes or knock-offs.

Columbo's basically been a made-for-TV movie for 15 years. In fact, it was never really a "series" in the conventional format, since it used to be part of the NBC "wheel" with McCloud, MacMillan and Wife, and other 2-hour shows. Not to mention, a lot's been lost in the translation over the years - especially with CSI-type shows so popular. A basic, holes-in-the-plot-type show like Columbo just wouldn't work in today's realistic TV sleuth era. And the idea of someone else playing Columbo...!

BTW, season 4 was just released on DVD today. I got mine. Season 5 comes out June 27.

I'm kinda a fan.
