Ok this has bugged me for years (pardon the pun) now and Im just curious If this happens to others. Sometimes when I am writing a paper using Microsoft Word it will lose the ability to delete letters or add letters to words properly. For instance, if I mispelled "hapens" and attempt to add an extra p it will just delete the p thats already there and add the new letter in its place. Also, when I attempt to add spaces it will begin to delete things instead of adding extra space. Im not sure if I am explaining this right but it pisses me off and is only alleviated after I restart MS Word. Is there anything I can do?

Press the 'Insert' key to move from overwrite mode to insert mode.

You're accidentally hitting the Insert button, located right next to delete on any keyboard i've seen.

I already have a graduate degree from UNC. Didn't think I needed a degree from an overgrown junior college. :)

That's it - insert toggles this mode. If you look at the status bar, you'll see either 'OVR' or 'INS', that's the indicator.

You might also be accidentally clicking on part of the bottom screen -- there's an area there that toggle between insert and OVR.

The same has happened to me, and the first time it happened it took me a while to figure out that I had accidentally hit the Insert key. So don't feel bad.
