View Full Version : Madden 2003 PC question

Okay, I violated my principle of never buying a game from EA Sports since the FOF2001 debacle. I got a $50 gift certificate from Media Play and after looking over all of the DVD box sets and PC games, I just couldn't find anything so I settled for Madden.
I'm just looking over the manual and saw that one could create custom helmets/uniforms. My question is has anyone (if it is possible) create a historical set (like the 1970 logos and uniforms)? Also, can the league structure and schedule be customized? I know it's not playing with a historical roster but I could think of this as everyone using the throwback uniforms.
Thanks.

i'm pretty sure that madden has all the throw back uniforms already built into the game. Dating all the way back to the 1950's if i'm not mistaken

"My question is has anyone (if it is possible) create a historical set (like the 1970 logos and uniforms)? "
I think the game alreayd has this, but you only set your own uniform. Yes, it is possible to create your own set of historical uniforms.
"Also, can the league structure and schedule be customized?"
I don't think so.

Wow, that's amazing.
Here's another question. Back when I used to play NCAA on the PC, I prefered to have the QB automatically throw the ball on a passing play. Once the receiver catches the ball or the RB received a handoff, I then manually run with that player. Do I assume that I could still play that way with Madden 2003?

Yes, as long as you do not touch a button or the D-pad, the game will control you players. Like if you snap the ball and don't do anything else, it'll control the QB. On D, it's the same way.

By the way in Madden 2003 they did away with online franchise mode. So if you wanted to be in an online league, as odd as this sounds, you would have to go buy Madden 2002. You can still play online, whether it be on EA sports Online ($5/month) or just ip to ip against a player. I have gone ip to ip with Darky before. He was wonderful.....

I have Madden 2003 on the PC and its a pretty cool game. I just prefer to be the GM in games like FOF other than play the games like Madden...just a personal prefrence.

I spent about 2 ½ hours last night on Madden 2003 and I was absolutely stunned and impressed with the game. It had been 4 years since I played a game of this nature (the last was NCAA 99) and seeing the radical improvements in the graphics, motion and depth in a graphical sports game was mind boggling. I guess it also helped that because of the nice custom system I have (2.0ghz cpu, 512m ram, 128mb GeForce4), the game recommended the highest settings all across the board. I played with all of the settings and options (except the sliders which I still have learn about), and found that they present a nice balance without overloading the gamer. I also had not kept up in the improvements in audio commentary and was amazed at how much better it has gotten.
I spent an hour practicing since I have never been (and still not) any good at gamepad controls. Running took most of the practice and still found that I can rarely use the various styles (jukes, speed, spins, etc.) in any coherent fashion. But that’s okay, the rest of the stuff like passing and defense I let the AI do it for me. Kicking I found to be much easier than what I remembered.
Probably the thing that impressed me more than anything else is the inclusion of historical helmets and uniforms. I spent quite a bit of time going through every single one of them and while I found a few critical omissions and errors (like the wrong historical helmet for the Bears, as well as wrong colored facemasks), it still was great to see. Folks like me get a kick out of things like that and while it adds nothing to actually game mechanics, it is one of the things that increases the fun factor tremendously.
I did actually play an exhibition game, playing as the current Rams (in their 1970 style uniform/helmet) against the Chargers in their powder blues and white helmet. I showed my wife a few plays and we both were happy and sad to see Warner throw long perfect passes again. Tonight I start looking at the career mode.
In all, I think I have finally found a football game I can have fun playing. While I have never been an arcade gamer, the presentation of Madden is so very well done that it can offer a refreshing and fun change of pace.
Thanks for your help, I will now dig up that old FOFC thread that talked about the sliders and stuff.

Anrhydeddu, check out this site for the most popluar sliders used at MaddenMania. These are not what I use but these are the most talked about.

Two points on these sliders. The facemask penalty slider is way too high. Set it back to around 65 and you will be much happier. Also, not sure he mentions pass lead sensitivity but if you find you are completing too many long bombs set it to at least 6. This needs to be set on the under User Profile/Settings as well as under Settings/Game/In-Game. Have fun.

We might have enough people for an on-line league next year if, *crosses fingers*, they reinstate that feature.. woohoo!!!!

Well, the nice thing about an FOFC league would be that we'd probably have a lot of fun and people wouldn't do the normal crap that goes on with EASO. They wouldn't would they? Umm, hmm, ahh :p

I'm actualy in a 2003 league right now. It's got a great set up. We play out games in Exhibition, and save the stats. Most of the guys in the league are in their 30's and are very computer savvy. A few guys have created some programs that compile the stats and so on. It's a 10 team league that plays 12 games per season. All fictional players so there are no "Terrel Owens" like players. Meaning if you air it out to a guy he wont catch it in triple coverage 9 out of 10 times. My team is the Richmond Confederates, yes I know I stole it from somebody in the FOBL...so sue me. We create our own art and stadiums. It's actualy very nice. We just play ip to ip. If you want to check out the website you can find it here (http://www.arctander.net/forums/forum.php?board=3). If Madden 2004 does have an online Franchise option I would be happy to be a part of it. If it doesn't I'm sure we could have a similar set up to this one.

Anrhydeddu,
Hope the settings help. I am really enjoying the hell out of my current madden career. Just taking things slowly and continually finding new aspects to be excited about. Everything about it is becoming more relevant to the grand scheme of things and seems to tie in nicely with the overall enjoyment factor. Personally, focusing on what is not in the game has not been too much of a factor since it is easy to get wrapped up in what is in the game.

Bucc, I feel ya. I have Madden for the PS2, and I have made my 2003 Chargers having any honorary "throwback season" wearing only the powder blues and the aways of those.. it's nice. I normally turn the other team to retro too. I am beginning to be very fond of the old school Patriot logo (3 pt stance) and colors.

Umm.. Bragg... it looks like you took over my old team... that is a GREAT GREAT league, unfortunately I totally flaked on them and feel like a complete ass for it, so I haven't shown my face over there since.. when it moved over to 2003 I never had the time to recreate my roster etc, and just totally never told them what was going on :(...
Tell the boys I said hello and i'm sorry..
