I’m With Stupid #133 – The Mid-Majors Edition

Of late, we’ve been bombarded with the phrase “mid-major.” It’s tournament time, so everyone is agog with the smaller schools who manage to get in and win a game or two. It’s a lot of fun.

Of course, “mid-major” is a term that is quite a bit like “pornography.” Pretty hard to define, but …“I know it when I see it.”

So, in the slippery spirit of the mid-major, we’ll use that as the theme for the contest questions. The definition of who is eligible for each question will be up to you – remember, there’s no right or wrong here… just Stupid and everyone else’s dumb ideas.

THE QUESTIONS

#1 – Name a college basketball program that will be the next to make the jump from “mid major” to a consistent power team

#2 – Name a college football program that will do the same

#3 – Name a well-known “mid major” U.S. newspaper

#4 – Name a current “mid major” country that will be a big international player in your lifetime

#5 – Name a current “mid major” politician who has a shot to become U.S. President

#6 – Name a “mid major” nationality/ethnicity whose food you enjoy eating

RESPONSES DUE BY WEDNESDAY, MARCH 22 - I WILL TALLY THAT EVENING

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Rules

The rules are the same as previous FOFC “I’m With Stupid" Contests, as set forth by the game’s honored and cherished founding fathers.

The object of this contest is to answer the questions posted, and to provide the most common answer among those submitted. For each question, your score will be equal to the number of people who submitted that response. Your score for the contest will be the product of your individual question scores. Highest score wins.

No collaborating in any way. No posting your answers to this board, nor sharing them by e-mail or in any other way with other potential contestants. And just in case this wasn’t clear enough – that includes cross-Atlantic correspondence between young Euros who may be naïve about American pop culture and old-as-dirt Americans who are probably even more so. No collaborating, capiche?

All determinations of "matches" and anything else requiring judgment fall to that of the sole administrator of this round of the game, me. You can reduce the need for doubt and judgment by properly spelling your submissions, being clear, and that sort of thing. My decisions are final and inarguable.

Any references that are unclear to you, due to language or geography, should be understood to be authored from the perspective of an English-speaking American college graduate. However...

Your answers do not necessarily have to be technically correct in order to score points. If I ask "who was the creative genius behind the band Genesis” and you and three others somehow respond Mike Rutherford, you will score 4 points – even though the more proper disposition would be to castrate you and feed the yield to the people who responded “Phil Collins.”

In the spirit of the mid-major, when I win this one, it will be a big upset nobody saw coming.

I think that it makes sense to end it before the Sweet Sixteen starts so that the games do not influence the answer to Question #1.

I'm not sure that makes it better.

Who was the creative genius behind Genesis anyway? Tony Banks?

Hmmm...I don't really think Mike Rutherford was the creative genius behind Genesis; however, I do think that The Living Years was a better single that most of Phil Collins' songs (which all sound alike due to his identifiable voice).

I thought there was a less obvious answer I was overlooking. I hate to admit that I'm not as familiar with the Gabriel era as I would like to be, given its brief nature. I know in generally I have been more fond of Gabriel's solo work than what I've heard from his Genesis days.

I think I'm still cracking up at the idea that there was a creative genius behind Genesis at all. It's like identifying Billy Joel's muse.

I just remember being at some New Year's Eve party and they were doing the countdown to #1 video on MTV and Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer was #1.
