How'bout that ?
I think it's pretty nice...
the guy's a future Hall of Famer, will serve as a quality starter for the next two years (length of his contract) and will mentor the young Guards Justin Smiley & David Baas (although there are talks Baas might move to Center for good if Newberry can't play anymore).
I think it's great to add quality depth like that, you never have too many offensive linemen and we absolutely need to give the best protection we can to young QB Alex Smith.
So, how do you guys like that off-season so far ? getting Antonio Bryant is GREAT (another ex-Cowboy, love that), getting experienced CB Walt Harris is nice (good depth for cheap) and now Larry Allen...I like the moves so far...
now let's wait to see what happens in the draft...

I'm a big fan of what Nolan is doing with this team. I don't know if he has bound and gagged York, but they are spending smart money on good players.
I love the acquisition of Allen. Check that.... I LOVE the acqusition of Allen. I think it is the best FA signing for the bay since Garrison Hearst.
Hopefully, D'Brick will fall to us in the draft and we have automatically upgraded half of our line.

I'm not a big fan of what Nolan is doing. Peterson is a genuine gamebreaking talent, and for a team so desperately lacking it, letting him go (hell, not franchising him for $8 mil) was frigging ridiculous. Talents like his don't come by easy in the FA era. They have $25 million of cap space they're going to spend on the old vets who'll be retired by the time the 49ers are a contender ? Say what you want about Eddie, but when he owned the team, they weren't so damn parsimonius.

Dola,
I do like the Antonio Bryant signing. They ought to be using the cap space to sign young, up and coming types - the Witherspoons, Kemoeatu,Pickett,Thornton's etc - young (27 and under) talent. Allen's a good player, but 2 years from now, are the 49ers any closer a playoff team by signing him ?

Larry Allen was no longer the best lineman on a team with a mediocre o-line. I would maybe tap the brake on that signing.

I really doubt we would take D'Brickashaw Fergusson if he were available at #6. Remember we invested quite a bit last year on Free Agent Tackle Jonas Jennings from the Buffalo Bills. Jennings is still a young player with upside and is already regarded as a team leader.
He is the starting LT so I don't see the team drafting Fergusson at that point.
The Niners O-Line for 2006 looks like this, at this point :
LG Larry Allen
LT Jonas Jennings
C Jeremy Newberry (or David Baas)
RT Adam Snyder
RG Justin Smiley
top backups:
T: Kwame Harris
G: David Baas

dola,
the exciting part in the O-Line is that Jennings, Snyder, Smiley, Baas and Harris are all young players with less than 5 years of experience (Jennings) and 4 years of experience (the rest)....
These guys are talented and could become a fierce unit for the years to come...remember, an O-Line only get better with time, after they play all together for a while...

Yeah, so why spend money on Allen instead of directing that to Peterson or one of the other young guys ?

Fwiw as a tremendously talented a player Peterson is...the plain fact is that Outside Linebackers are much more replacable than Offensive linemen.
In Allen, they have a future Hall of Famer so even on the downside of his career, he is still GREAT (Peterson was not so great last year btw).
Also, the commitment is not about Allen or Peterson, it's about the investment the franchise made on $54M dollar man Alex Smith.
Protecting him and making sure his development works (with a good O-Line) is the top priority.

What makes you think he is still great? Being forced to watch the Cowboys every Sunday here in Dallas and listening to all the reports on him. He's anything but still "great."
I think they still need to upgrade at the CB position. But i do like this signing.

It almost seems like there is a FOF player running things for the 49ers. Recent moves include signing Derek Smith (Mentor to Inside Linebackers), Walt Harris (Mentor to Cornerbacks) and Larry Allen (Mentor to Offensive Guards). In FOF terms, they are ready to fill out the roster with draft picks and rookie free agents and start growing some talent.

It's a shame their O-Line is protecting Alex Smith, a QB who would've have even been in the top 3 QB's taken in this years draft.
I know he's a rookie but he just looks so sloppy when he does play, and as a Lion fan, I know much about watching young "promising" qb's.
From a Cowboys fan who watched and read a lot about Larry Allen last year...yes, he is no longer the player he was in his prime. His liabilities are mainly in the running game though, as a pass protector he was still very good. The Cowboys' problems with pass protection last season were mainly the young tackles who were #1 and #2 in the league at giving up sacks.

Allen is still a very good player. He doesn't have near the lateral quickness he once had, but his power and technique is as good as ever. If San Fran doesn't ask him to pull a lot, he'll perform very well for them. Combine that with his ability to tutor youngsters and this seems like a can't-miss deal for the Niners in my opinion.

they can sign pretty much whatever FA they want, and they still are going tom make me want to smash my head into the wall every sunday....i dont think larry allen and antonio bryant compensate for losing andre carter and julian peterson....we may be able to protect smith a little, and maybe gore can pick up a few yards (i hate barlow) with allen helping the young guys along, but teams are gonna smash us in the mouth and run all over us with whats left of the front 7
*hangs montana jersey in back of closet for another season*

On the flip side of it, I don't think the Antonio Bryant signing was a good one. I just don't see this guy living up to his potential. He's a whiney baby, and the last thing Smith needs is to listen to Bryant complain.
Then again, they are the Niners and I always wish them ill. So it's cool with me. :D

It is a good signing if Allen keeps his weight. Parcells was on him about it shortly after he became head coach. Will Allen listen to Nolan or the Niners OL coach if he starts getting lazy and gains weight?

Maybe Nolan is secretly a member here.

Terrible move, because he was supposed to be a Raider!;) He would have been a great help in our move back to a smash mouth power running game. The Raiders are talking about the "nothing fancy", just knock you off the ball blocking this year and this could have really put some "muscle behind that hustle".
