I hate birthdays

...and I'll tell you why. They inspire too much fake happiness, which I think is bad for the soul.

Back at my last place of employment, a piece of paper went out each year to every employee, detailing everyone's birthdays. I'd walk the hall on my birthday, and I'd have four or five people tell me "happy birthday."

Fine, except these are sometimes people who don't even give me the time of day any other time. These people clearly don't give a damn whether my day is happy - they are just fulfilling their duty as office-workers. It's preposterous.

If you want to convey to me that you care about me - say hello. Ask how my weekend was. Talk to me. Spend time with me. That's all fine. Don't single out one day, pretend that you like me then, and then ignore me again for another 364 days.

I don't celebrate my birthday (and am really not much for holidays, anniversaries, or commemorations in general), and I really don't much care whether you do, either. I do care, however, that you treat me with respect, and if you like me and care about my hapiness - then I really do care about that.

(The preceding many uses of "you" are meant in the generic second/third person, not as "you" a member of the FOFC forums)


So happy birthday to whomever is listed on the site today... I hope you have a great day. As it turns out, I probably also hope you have a nice year, and wish you well in general. I won't be prompted to say it to you in particular today... but if I mean it, I'll make sure that you know it, and it should mean something to both of us that way.

I never celebrated birthdays either, wasn't my parent's fault, because it was obviously a memorable day for them, I just never messed with it much as I grew older.

I see tons of people going out with large groups of friends to "celebrate" their birthday, or heading out to get drunk, or what have you. That's just never happened for me, and I refuse to let it.

I see tons of people, happy people, heading out the door, arm in arm with friends or significant others, smiling jovially that they're heading out to "celebrate their special day." Usually, I just smile and turn away, grab another powdered doughnut and continue cleaning my gun.

Take comfort, birthday celebrators, have your fun, your revilery. But don't you forget that there are people like C. Todd Mason towing the line, paying the freight, down in the trenches making this world work.

Interesting analysis, but I think you need to take it on yourself to tell people this. A lot (me not included) like this. Just saying those magic words forces a smile to the lips and a twinkle in their eyes. Especially, from people they have had little to no contact with over the course of the year. They wear the "happy birthday" or whatnot, like a badge of courage for the remainder of the day/week.

My wife is like this. She will accept random acts of kindness from people she doesn't care for and gets all excited, and yet gets all over the people she feels should be saying these words (even when they do!). People suck.

my wife is a huge hockey fan.
I'm renting a party suite for a Monarchs (AHL) game this Saturday for 13 people. We're going to surprise her at her parents house, have a "tailgating" birthday party, and then I'm getting a couple of limos to take us all to the game.

It's going to be a blast, and the fact that it's going to be complete surprise to her (she thinks her party is the following weekend) is just the icing on the cake. The best part is that the hardest aspect - getting her to go to her parents house for the day without her thinking something is up - was solved by her; she announced out of the blue last week that she wanted to go to her moms that day to do our taxes. She thinks I'm working, so this will really catch her by surprise.

Hard keeping the secret though.

A funny story about the coroprate machine, I got a birthday card from friday's about a week ago, too bad my birthday is in April.

Ahh, my thoughts/wife's actions exactly. Strange how people can at times be some nasty to the one's they hold dearest, but will be as polite as can be to individuals they've never seen before in their lives.

Oh well, that's something for the FOFC Psychologists to take a look into, not me.

we're both kind of jonesing a bit for a game - we have the 10 game season tickets, and it's been about a month since our last game.

we're going Friday night as well, but Saturday is the BIG game that she doesn't know about.

you should drop by and say hi sometime - we're normally in 212 (right by the back entrance), row C right by the aisle.
