The Hank Jr. thread got me thinking that I would post this...

Is anyone else here into Country Line and/or Couples Dancing?

I grew up around it basically. My mother was a competitive couples dancer from about the age of 7 or 8 for me until I was 17 or 18. She was quite good and did very well in competitions and made it to a relatively high level. I travelled the east coast to many competitions at for awhile her and her dance partner had a DJ business so I helped DJ various competitions, dances, etc. in my early teenage years.

Anyway, I of course thought it was the dorkiest, lamest thing possible. Until about 15 when I started to realize the attractive girls that were doing this. There was a place in Springfield, VA (about 20-30 minutes from where I grew up) called Blackie's House of Beef that was also a country place. They did a thing where on Sunday's you could get in to dance no matter what age you were (normally it and everywhere else was 21 and up). I started going here and was hooked quickly. My brother, some close friends, and I started going every week and became relatively well known there because growing up around it I guess I was pretty good and liked to show-off. Anyway, this happens to also be where I met my g/f that I have been dating for almost 8 years now.

So, the interest has continued for me, but with the closest place being about an hour away, I don't go nearly as often as I used to. I go maybe once every month or every couple months, but I still love it. I mainly do line dancing because of what I grew up doing (line dancing is what was popular with the teenagers where I was going). I do know some 2-step and enjoy West Coast Swing a lot, but I have a limited knowledge of moves so I get bored quickly with it. Plus the places down here are a little less "Dance Place" and a little more "Country Bar" so the line dancers tend to take up a HUGE chunk of the dance floor and do not have very good dance etiquette.

So, I am curious, is anyone else into it?

I can two-step a little bit. Living in Abilene I was forced to learn how to do it...

There's a good chance you learned to do it what I call the "redneck" way vs. doing it the "dancer" way....

but if I go itno that you realize what I snob I am with this stuff... ;)...

Heh, back in Abilene they laugh at people who line-dance. So apparently the snobbery goes both ways... :)

Well, the people I grew up watching dance would turn their nose up at line-dancers also, but it had to do with where I started actually dancing myself and the age group I learned to dance with.

Been to Blackie's when I was a kid (I grew up in Maryland)... nice place. Never did any dancing there, though.

two-stepping has to be one of the easiest dances that a guy can learn quickly and use to impress women. It's the only dance I know, but I've gotten a lot of mileage out of it.

I never could dance, never liked it, never want to try, and never want to learn. And being forced to watch Dancing with the Star reinforces my opinion of dancing.

Moshing, on the other hand, I used to be pretty good at.
