Alright folks, time for all Tiger's fans to come out of the closet! Its been a long time coming, but things are finally looking up for us long-time sufferers. So in the spirit of the Mayo Smith Society (if you don't know, don't ask!) Say it in this thread here and now right up front at the beginnning of the season...

I AM A DETROIT TIGERS FAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'M A TIGERS FAN!!!!
i started watching and fell in love with baseball in 1976 when i was 8 yrs old.
That year Mark Fydrich burst on the baseball scene. I loved that guy and followed by loving the Tigers.
I, also, remember 1984, sitting at home with my brother and dad. watching the Tigers on TV. Jack Morris is pitching in the 1st week of the season. Throws a no-no. i was jumping around the house. On the spot i bet my brother the Tigers would win the WS. Loved that $10

I fully understand that. The Royals and Rangers (especially when you are facing the bottom half of the Rangers' rotation) are not that impressive. At all. That said, these are the Tigers. They've pretty much been the worst team in baseball over the last 15 years or so. So being able to beat "lesser" teams and do so convincingly and mopping up on poor pitching is something long suffering fans will get excited about.

Honolulu_Blue

I also understand they've played about 1/40th, or so, of the season.

We all know the Tigers have much to prove but I've been there through the thick and thin, and I am not backing out now. When we lost 119 games in 03 I still made it out to 30 games and this year will be 30 more. I listen to games not on TV and I am just as excited now as I was then.

I'm in for life.

I still don't think the Tigers will win the central, although I think it's possible. I do think there's a better than 50% chance that they'll at least win the WC, but even if they do, their lack of postseason experience would likely end them.

On the other hand, they could pull a White Sox.

Here you again with this bandwagoners thing... You seeing a lot of "bandwagon" Tigers fans up there in Sunny Bellingham?

Here's how it works. Some fans accused of being bandwagon fans are actually just casual fans. Casual fans tend to get more vocal, buy more paraphenilia, etc., when a team is doing well. When a team is doing well, the city gets excited, local media covers said team, more merchandise is put out on the shelves, and thus casual fans start getting a little more die hard/hard core. (see, e.g., Detroit Red Wings 1970-current day).

You can be a fan of a team without spending hard earned money every year on MLB extra innings (or the Centre Ice Package or the NFL Sunday Ticket or whatever the NBA season pass is called) and team merchandise.

bob
05-26-2006, 07:08 AM
Why do people care about bandwagon fans? Other than possibly making tickets tougher to get, what's the damage? More fans = greater chance to be on TV, more merchandise to choose from, more exposure for your team. Right?

Kind of unrelated but, I am really getting sick of all the "Detroit is a ___________ town now/again!" headlines. Detroit is "Hockeytown", but you couldn't give tickets away in the 80's. Detroit is now a "basketball city" once again, yet you couldn't give tickets away in the mid/late 90's. Now Detroit is a "baseball town" again, but nobody gave a shit for the last decade.

IMO, if you want to label Detroit with one sport, it has to be football town. The Lions sell out every fricking game, and they haven't had a decent team in almost a decade. Not to mention you regularly get 100,000+ people into Michigan Stadium and 75,000+ into Spartan Stadium on the same day.

Actually, I remember that, while the Palace very rarely sold out back then, it was usually close to 75% full. This was especially true after the '94-'95 season when Grant Hill started getting people to come back, and then the year after that, they started making the playoffs again. Sure they would lose in the 1st round everytime, but the seasons were exciting, and the Palace was pretty full.

Detroit is a sports town, period. Detroit is similiar to Chicago in that the Bulls made tons of fans in the 90's and still have sellouts because of that, like the Red Wings did. But if anyone asks Chicago is not a basketball town. Im sure Cubs fans say its a baseball town, Bears fans say its a football town. Regardless, like Detroit its a SPORTS town.

Jon Kitna will pass for 4000+ yards
Jon Kitna will throw 35+ TD passes
Jon Kitna will throw 2 INT's
Kevin Jones will run for 1600 yards
Roy Williams will have 1000+ yards
Roy Williams will have 10+ TD's
Charles Rogers will mature
Mike Williams will mature
The O-line will block like a MF
Shaun Rogers will have 13+ sacks
The DE's will create pressure and shut down outside runs.
The LB's will smother the field on runs and passes.
Dre Bly will have 10+ picks.

The loss will be on a controversial fluke play that the new commissioner will admit was a mistake.

The tie will be the greatest game ever seen by mankind.

The Lions will lose their opening playoff game.

Well, quite a day around here. Tigers win the rubber game 2-1. Local news shows Tom Hanks and Ron Howard, doing a baseball city tour, watching the game in the seats like real-life fans. Hanks even has a Detroit hat on.

Now the bad news. Channel 7 released the police report on Dimitri Young. Very very very very bad. Don't see how this guy will overcome that report even if he gets the rest of his act together to play again. I think its over for that guy, at least as far as the Tigers are concerned.

Report also says that on the fateful night of Young's episode another Tiger was in the bar and they dissappeared into a room alone for awhile. This could become a big, overriding distraction during the second half of the season. Hope not, doesn't look good though.

The plan in Detroit all along was to add Maroth and use a 6 man rotation through Aug-Sept to rest Verlander some. Maroth wont be back until Sept. at the earliest and this is the solution. Expect Verlander to skip at least 1 more start before the season ends, to rest him a bit.

Leyland won one with our Marlins, and now he has a chance to win another with the Tigers. If they do win, a great way to end his career.

Yes, and what is even more interesting...should Leyland win the World Series with Detroit he would become only the second manager in history to win a World Series with both an AL and an NL team. The first being Sparky Anderson with Cincinnati and then Detroit. :) :) :)

GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great game, awesome celebration by the Tigers. I haven't ever seen a team celebrate with the fans as much as this.

I was on the phone with my brother, who was at the game for most of the evening. Supposedly another 50,000 people are outside the stadium partying/watching(street level can see the field in a SMALL part of the stadium).

Yes, awesome celebration when they sprayed the fans with the bubbly...Also, anybody catch when Kenny Rogers went on top on the dugout and poured champagne on that State Trooper?

Sweet.

That was the most fun I've had watching a baseball game since I don't know when. It was like watching the Sox beat the Yanks in Game 7 a couple of years ago, except I really cared about the team kicking the Yanks' asses. If they can find a way past the As, they've got a legit shot at winning it all, because from what I've seen of the NL, they all suck.

Being there tonight .. words can't describe it. For fifteen minutes after the final out no one in our section left. It was as if everyone was taking it. So surreal.

I wasn't born yet when the Tigers won the series in 84 so this is my first time seeing them win any type of postseason series. Wow, this is awesome.

The '84 season was amazing. Saturday night, with Rogers pitching the game of his life, Ernie Harwell in the booth, and Dox showing Gibson's HR vs. the Pads...just brings back all sorts of memories for me.

This might be cliche but it still hasn't sunk in yet. As someone whos been a die hard fan who goes to 30 + games a year what they're doing doesnt seem real at all. Four more wins. Unreal.

ESPN Poll (http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/fp/flashPollResultsState?sportIndex=frontpage&pollId=39931)

83% to 17% nationwide poll that believes the Tigers will win the World Series. The only state that didn't believe in the Tigers is Missouri and it has 48% for Detroit.

Being a Blue Jays fan I HATED, no, LOATHED, the Tigers in the 80s and 90s. Now that we are no longer in thw same division and with both teams being mediocre to abysmal in the past number of years the hatred has subsided and I now find myself actually cheering for Detroit. Congrats to the Tigers and their fans. A buddy of mine that I haven't seen for many years is a Tigers fan and we used to have WARS in high school about the Tigs and the Jays. I think I may call him up and say congrats to him as well.
