There are two shows coming up in D.C. that I would really like to attend. Unfortunately, I'm only able to go to one.

So I thought I'd put up a poll and let you guys decide which act I should see.

I'm a huge They Might Be Giants fan. I've seen them four times, and every time they've put on a great show.

Nickel Creek is one of my favorite bands as well, and I've never seen them live. My step-daughter recently saw them in New Orleans and said they were fantastic.

I'm really torn here. Leaning towards Nickel Creek because I've never seen them before and Sarah Watkins is incredibly hot, but I don't know how many more chances I'll have to see TMBG.

nah, just hadn't finished it yet. :) I didn't realize there's a gap between posting the message and posting the poll.

Nickel Creek... TMBG is great, but if you've seen them four times...

On that note, where is Nickel Creek performing?

I voted Trout as I have never heard of Nickel Creek.

Plus, with a trout, at least you know what you are going to get.

Trout. Call me an old fogey, but I just don't see the point of going to a concert when you're over the age of 25.

fogey. I've gotten to the point where I don't like to go to big arena shows, but I still enjoy seeing live music.

Exactly, that's why I asked about the venue...

So 9:30... 9:30 is so hit or miss for me... if it's too crowded, I hate the place...

I think both of those acts would be fun there though. I might have to try and talk the little woman into driving up to see Nickel Creek...

I've yet to actually see a show at 9:30. But the fact that neither one of these shows has sold out yet gives me hope that it's not going to be too crowded.

I'm definitely leaning towards the mega-rac... I mean Nickel Creek. Let me know if you decide to come up. I'll buy you a beer.

Well, I'll give you advice...

Depending on your preference for shows... If you like to be somewhat relaxed and have the option of sitting down, come somewhat earlier.. there is a mezzanine type deal and there are small tables/chairs around the balcony... but the seats are pretty limited... If you like to stand and not be completely smothered, the mezzanine again may be your best bet...

The floor is a bit of a mixed bag depending on who you're seeing and how crowded it is... I went to a sellout of Dropkick Murphy's there and had an "I'm Old" experience as I was smashed in the back against the doors... but when it is less crowded and not such a young "punk" (quite literally) crowd the floor can be a relatively calm experience. For both of those shows I would expect an older, calmer crowd than Dropkick.

My brother lives within walking distance of 9:30 (Logan Circle), so if I can talk her into it I'll let you know.

TMBG is always solid; only shows I walk away from saying "I had FUN!"

Nickel Creek--I think I saw them open for Dylan/Willie Nelson and was really unimpressed; but the venue (a minor league baseball park) may not have been suited for thier sound. I say think I saw them, because it looks like the group, right down to the female fiddle player, but I suppose it could have been someone else.

Why is there not a "both" option? If they are 5 days apart that is plenty of time to rest up, even for an old fogey like you ;)

The fact that you've seen TMBG 4 times and still want to go back should be taken into consideration. There are plenty of bands that don't inspire even a second viewing.

Funny how an otherwise totally homely chick can be called "cute" just because she's got big boobs.

I guess you're right about the venue thing... the only two big concerts I've ever been to were stadium-type deals when I was in college... I just can't imagine enjoying that nowadays.

Because my wife says I can't. :o

Actually, I'm not embarrassed by that. She stays home with at least two kids (toddlers even) every day, and now she's got all four that are still living at home driving her nuts. She's pretty good about giving me "boys nights", but I've had a lot of those lately.

Plus, I'm cheap. Tickets to concerts these days are waaaayyy to expensive for my taste, especially when you factor in surcharges and b.s. like that.

Man you have a lot to learn! Hire a babysitter, buy her a ticket to whichever one she would enjoy and surprise her with a date night! :)

Actually, I've been happily married for nine years, so I think I know my wife very well, thanks.

She doesn't like live music, so she's not interested in attending any concerts. We have our date nights, but this falls outside that category. I also have my "boys nights out" and she has her "girls nights out" in addition to our date nights.

I realize you were trying to be helpful, and maybe I'm just taking it the wrong way, but I'm a little insulted by your insinuation that I don't know much about relationships, my wife, etc.

It sounds like you two are resolving this by PM, but FWIW I took oliegirl's post to be a playful jab and not too serious. But what do I know?

I voted for TMBG and given your longstanding signature at FOFC, I'm surprised you wouldn't go see them yet again.

So I saw Nickel Creek last night (and the wife says I can go see TMBG next week as well). They put on a fantastic show, and if you're a fan of bluegrass or alt.country I would highly recommend taking in a show if/when they come to town.

BTW, Mega-Rack looked pretty good last night.

As you can see, the dress was a little too high cut for my taste, but I got to stand next to a young nubile tattooed and big-chested chick for three hours, so that kinda made up for it.

They are going to be at the Fargo Theater next month, it probably seats 500 or so. I have 3rd row seats and am really looking forward to it.

So I saw TMBG last night at 930 club. This was easily the worst TMBG show I've seen, but it was still a good show by general standards. The biggest complaint was how short the set was. They went on at 10 p.m. and by 11:30 were playing their second encore. They also played a lot of unfamiliar material, including at least four new songs (two of which were good, two of which I thought were mediocre) and several songs from their Venue Songs project.

Highlights included a live rendition of "Fingertips" off Apollo 18, "We're the Replacements" and "Purple Toupee".

The one thing I noticed was that John Linnell seems to be somewhat bored with the older songs. He was messing around with the signatures, singing the songs quite a bit differently than they appear on the albums, and even looked somewhat bored with the old material.

This was the first night of the tour, so I'm hoping that had a lot to do with it. I'd hate to think they're losing their touch.

Went to the Nickel Creek show last night, great show.

It started a little slow, but after Sara's inspireded rendition of "Short People" (a Randy Newman cover)
she had the adiance eating out of her hand.

"Toxic" (Britny Spears cover) brought the house down.

I expected more Blue Grass but they played everything from Sperers to Bach.

The show started at 7:30 with an opening act and didn't get over tell 11:00.
